Canadian Universities MSW. The waiting game 2014 admissions
smpalesh replied to AccioMSW's topic in Social Workers Forum
When I got acknowledgement of my application they said that first acceptance will be going out via email. So if you get accepted you should receive an email first. For those who are rejected (sadly afraid this will be me ) we will have to wait until we get a letter. -

You would think that if they are working on the 2 year apps that would mean they are done the 1 year apps. Which is not looking good for me -

Starting to get stressed about Laurier. They said we would hear (for the advanced standing) by the end of February but I looked at the results thing on here and last year people got acceptance emails on February 9. I will be devastated if I don't get it. There are two people from my BSW program that I'm currently in that I cannot stand and they have applied to the same programs as me and, I know it's petty, I will be so pissed if they get in and I don't! -

Aww, sorry to hear about Waterloo. That is sure a fast response time. I don't know about Lakehead but UofT is mid-March for advanced standing, not sure what it is for the 2-year. -

I am totally stressed waiting for an answer but luckily for me I don't have much longer to wait. I am applying for the advanced standing program so for Laurier I will know by the end of this month and for UofT I will know by mid-March. Knowing soon is actually stressing me out more bc it means I can't keep convincing myself I will get in, if I don't get in I will know it soon and then I have no idea what I'm going to do. -
I wouldn't take one person's word on what is or is not a top university in Canada. There are many other outstanding universities in Canada and we place MUCH less prestige on a "brand name" university than they do in the US.
-
I don't agree with this at all. It depends on what field you are in as well. Many other Canadian universities are considered top ranked universities. Just because they don't show as the top 4 on a list doesn't mean anything. You certainly have a very close-minded viewpoint.

I wanted to add I have a 3.7 GPA with my fall courses added in so I think I have a good shot as long as I get them to count the fall courses. -

I only have 10 courses at the 300/400 level if I add in the 3 courses I took in Fall 2013 semester. Obviously the first transcript I sent UofT didn't have the fall courses because they didn't become available on the transcript until January 23. Do you think I still have time to get the transcript to them before they kick me out of the running for not having enough courses? I am not home right now (family emergency) but I can fax a request to my current university tomorrow for the transcript. The earliest I could get it to UofT would be February 7. I am applying for the Advanced Standing and I am worried they will have already dismissed my application. -

Interesting obversation - I couldn't figure out what an HBSW was (what is the H?) so I googled Lakehead's program. Their answer as to what is the difference between an HBSW and BSW is inaccurate. It says and HBSW is Honours and is considered a 4th year degree while a BSW is a 3 year degree. It also says you need their HBSW to be a registered social worker after graduating. I am doing my BSW at UW right now. It is an honours degree - 4th year degree - and graduates are eligible to be registered social workers. Just thought I would note that in case anyone is looking at BSW programs and thinking that Lakehead's is better because it has an H in front of it. The BSW program at UW is exactly the same quality of program. -

Is anyone else applying for the Advanced Standing programs? Laurier will be making notifications mid-late February and UofT by mid-March. In a way it is nice that it is less time to wait but I am also freaked out bc I am currently in a BSW program so if I don't get in anywhere all my classmates will know it and I will feel like crap when I hear about everyone else getting in somewhere. So I kind of like living in my little limbo bubble right now as well. I could hear from Laurier within a month - yikes! -

Is anyone else wishing it was February already? I feel like I am stuck in limbo right now. I will be glad when I just know for sure either way. -
I would call because if you email and they don't respond in a timely manner you will likely stress about whether or not they got the email or whether you should email again. If you call then you either get someone or leave a message. Plus I think calling seems more professional.

How Are You Coping With The Torture Of Waiting???
smpalesh replied to PsycD's topic in Waiting it Out
To be honest I'm not stressing or obsessing at all. I know the time period when they will start giving results and it isn't close to that time yet so I'm not bothering to check anything. I know I can't change anything about my application now so either I'll get in or I won't and I can't do anything about that at this point. -

I found this website helpful - https://sites.google.com/site/gradappadvice/application-essays Some of it seems more for the US but the tips are helpful in general. I made sure to write specifically to each program I applied to. So I researched on the Laurier website and found classes and programs that I was excited about and mentioned that in my personal statement. You want to show them why you are a good choice for them. I did the same thing with U of T, focused my statement on specific things about their program that I was wanting to get involved with. Writing a generic statement is the kiss of death IMO. -

My status has now been updated on UofT as well! As I have decided not to apply to Western (goodbye $100 application fee ) there is nothing let to do for the application process but wait! Is anyone else applying for the Ontario Graduate Scholarship? I was sick for all of December so I haven't done it yet and I need to get on that. The deadline for UofT is January 24 and the deadline for Laurier is February 3. I am not too confident that I even have a shot but I figure I should at least try. It is based on your last twenty courses and my average for the last twenty courses is only 85%. It says minimum is A- (80-84%). But I figure it is at least worth trying. -

78% is on the low end but it will depend on your entire application. Laurier is really hard to get into. Last year I applied for the 2 yr MSW with an 85% average and 4 years of volunteer experience and was told that successful applicants had 5+ years experience. But then reading on here, last years thread, some people got in with less than that. So it really depends. I am doing my BSW at UWaterloo this year and am applying to Laurier and UofT for the Advanced Standing MSW. -

I don't really have a plan B. I've come to the end of what I can do with my education so my plan would be to attempt to get a job or volunteer to gain more experience and reapply. The only thing I can really improve is my experience bc my GPA is in the high-80s so I can't really do much to improve on that. -

I found the Laurier application pretty straightforward (mine was due December 1). I found the FAQ page most helpful - http://www.wlu.ca/page.php?grp_id=30&p=7570 -

Today I just keep thinking it's officially 2014. This is the year that will make or break my chances at a Master's degree. I can't wait until results start coming in. Mid-late February for Laurier, mid-March for U of T, mid-April for Western. For better or worse in the next 4 months I'll know my future. No pressure though! lol
