Canadian Universities MSW. The waiting game 2014 admissions
smpalesh replied to AccioMSW's topic in Social Workers Forum
Hmm, I don't know about that. I have never heard of UofT taking 150 students for the advanced standing program. And I have never heard of any Masters program anywhere taking 1/2 of all students that appply. Someone who got accepted to UofT last year, as well as the information session at my university, said they accept approximately 32% of applicants. -

I am at school right now and a ton of people got rejections letters from Laurier last night. Did anyone here get one? I didn't but I assume mine will be in the mail today bc I haven't gotten an acceptance email. So sad -

Last year there were 280 applicants and they took 90 students. So basically we have a 1 in 3 chance. -

I agree, it would be better if they could do all the notifications on the same day, or at the very most over two days. Knowing that other people got accepted to the program on Thursday and I've still heard nothing either way is really, really frustrating! I would prefer they just do it online. Pick a day and say everyone can go online and check their status on that specific day and then everyone knows. Would be so much easier. -

I am at my BSW program today and no one here has heard anything from Laurier. Not sure if that means I still have a chance or not. Has anyone heard of anyone else getting an acceptance or rejection? They said everyone would hear by the end of February, well it is now February 24! -

If they said you would hear mid-February I would call or email just to get an idea where they are in the process. I don't think they would think badly of you for wondering, especially when February is now almost over. -

I applied to the IFG stream originally but their website says you can switch so if I get accepted I will be switching to CPPO. I don't necessarily think I will still get in but I do find it very odd that no one in my BSW program has heard yet because the odds that none of us got in are slim to none. So I expect they will still be sending acceptances at the beginning of the week. At this point though, due to my lack of experience I am not expecting to get in and I am putting all my hopes on UofT. -
I've applied to MSW programs at Laurier and UofT. Some people are already hearing acceptances from Laurier so I am starting to lose hope there. Hopefully I will get into UofT (it would actually be my first choice except for the fact I'd have to commute). Smitten Pears - that is really crazy to hear on a Sunday! Congrats! And I bet it is even more exciting because you weren't expecting to hear today

How Are You Coping With The Torture Of Waiting???
smpalesh replied to PsycD's topic in Waiting it Out
I am currently in school completing my BSW so I am "supposed" to be waiting it out by studying for midterms and doing projects. Instead I am somewhat studying for midterms while reading on here and watch Ellen videos on youtube. Need to get back on track! Studying for a class I totally hate is really not doing much to distract me. I will know from one school likely by the end of this week (although it's not looking good because other people have already gotten acceptance emails) and the other one by mid-March at the latest so I don't have too much longer to wait but I almost think the wait will be easier than if I get rejected by both and have to reassess my future. -

They don't separate the streams while doing admissions. I know two people on here have gotten acceptances but I don't know of anyone in my BSW program who has heard anything and I do find it hard to believe that none of us will get accepted. I don't think anyone is a shoo-in though. All of us who are applying have good qualifications and it just depends on who they feel is the best fit. Hopefully we all hear by the end of this week. -

Actually not looking forward to tomorrow. On the weekend I can kind of bury my head in the sand and pretend I'm not waiting for my future to be decided because I know I'm not going to get an email or letter on the weekend. As of tomorrow I go back into stress mode, hoping every ding of my phone is an acceptance email. What makes it even harder is I am currently doing my BSW and all day Monday and Tuesday I have classes with my group of 60 students and most likely one or more of them will get an acceptance email from Laurier during the course of the day making me feel like crap. Grad schools you are ruining my life! -

Piper Stewart - What day and time did you receive the acceptance email to Laurier? I'm currently doing my BSW at UW and all of the people from program I've talked to have not heard anything from Laurier yet. -

Thanks for the pick-me-up. Yes, I've heard that about UofT as well so I think my odds might be higher there. I applied to the 2yr at Laurier last year and even though their website says 2 yrs experience for the 2 year MSW the rejection letter I got said that the successful applicants had 3-5 years full-time experience with a year of experience equaling 1750 hours. I have about 2 yrs full time experience by that calculation. So I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised if I am really not into Laurier. -

Well, the week is over and I didn't hear from Laurier so I am expecting a rejection letter. So sad. I wish I had the actual letter so I could give up hope. 2-3 more weeks until I should hear from UofT. I don't know how much of a shot I have at UofT if I didn't get into Laurier because I've heard UofT is harder to get into. -
Anyone else regretting not applying to more schools?
smpalesh replied to waitingNC's topic in Waiting it Out
I definitely wish I had applied to more schools. I only applied to 2 and I am just waiting on my rejection letter from top choice (acceptance emails have already gone out to other people ). So now I only have one more chance and I am feeling really dumb for only applying to 2. -

Do you mind my asking what your qualifications are? I am just trying to figure out what I can do to improve my application. I have a 3.9 GPA and 4.5 years volunteer experience at a rape crisis centre plus my practicum. Not sure what else they want. -

I didn't apply there but I think it is helpful for people to post this information, whether it is positive or negative, because at least we have an idea where the schools are in the process. -

I am seriously going crazy! Laurier said we would know within the last 2 weeks of February. It is now the 20th and there are only 6 business days left in the month. Not to mention last year people got notified by the 2nd week of February. This is so totally driving me nuts! Every time my phone dings signaling an email I get excited but then it ends up being some stupid email telling me there's a sale at Old Navy or something! -

That is for the 2 year. For the advanced standing we will be notified by mid-March. -

UofT won't be doing acceptances/rejections until mid-March. I think it is definitely too early to hear from them. -

Me too, I am still not 100% sure what the reply means. What does 'start processing the recommendations' mean? Does that mean they will send out acceptance emails by the end of the week or that they will be making decisions and we won't hear until next week or even later? Every single time my phone dings signalling an email my heart jumps into my throat! -

I emailed Laurier to ask where they are in the process (for the Advanced Standing program) and here is the response I received: "Our Graduate Office should start to process our recommendations by the end of the week." So it sounds as if we won't be hearing until next week at the earliest. Last year the sent out the acceptances the second week of February. I guess they are running slower this year. -
Got an email asking for Fall grades. How should I respond?
smpalesh replied to iammaffyou's topic in Waiting it Out
Personally I think you send them your Fall grades which is what they asked, no trying to hide anything. I had one school ask for my Fall grades so I resent my transcripts. You can't hide from them that you did poorly. And if you are applying for graduate level work getting C's might not cut it to be perfectly honest. Most programs are very competitive. -

As of tomorrow I will be obsessively checking my email bc Laurier said they will send out acceptances via email first. We are supposed to find out in the last 2 weeks of February and tomorrow is February 18. I am so stressed about whether or not I will get in. I think I have the qualifications to get in but last year they got 120 applications and only 28 people got in so obviously a lot of qualified people still don't get it. Aaaaahhhhhhh!!!
