Canadian Universities MSW. The waiting game 2014 admissions
smpalesh replied to AccioMSW's topic in Social Workers Forum
Congrats to all the new acceptances! Hopefully everyone else gets some good news soon too -
What about student loans? That's how I am having to pay for my Master's degree.
-
You were already rejected. Keep improving your grades and apply again next year.

Canadian Universities MSW. The waiting game 2014 admissions

Their waitlist is open until July 31 which means you could hear back any time until then, or you could not hear at all. Unfortunately a waitlist spot is no guarantee of admission. Laurier has 28 spots and keeps 30 people on the waitlist. It sucks but hopefully you'll hear something soon. -

You actually have a higher chance of getting into an MSW if you do a BSW first, statistically that is. For what it's worth I applied for the 2 year MSW at Laurier last year and did not get in, so this year I am doing my BSW and applied for the advanced standing at Laurier and UofT. I got waitlisted at Laurier and accepted at UofT, so it was definitely worth it. -

It is WAY too early to be making that assumption yet. You still have a chance. Don't give up yet! -

UofT processed the advanced standing decisions much earlier than normal. All decisions were sent out by mail on March 3. At that time I was able to check ROSI and see I was excited before the letter arrived (March 6). I would wager since they were ahead with the advanced standing they will also be ahead for the 2year as well. -

You're not going to be able to wait for news of the OGS to accept or not, as typically those results don't come out until later than all acceptance dates. -
I have a really hard time believing something like this would be going on and that no one would report it. Sounds like making stuff up to me, especially with absolutely no proof to back it up.
-
Why even apply if you are expecting all rejections? I don't understand this attitude.
-
Last year I applied for a the 2 years MSW at Laurier and was rejected so I did the 1 year post-grad BSW instead. This year I applied to the advanced standing MSW and I was accepted at UofT and waitlisted at Laurier (will be attending UofT). So the moral of my story is if you are rejected - do something to up your chances! Do another degree or upgrade classes, get more experience, etc. Don't just reapply without having changed anything or you will continue to have the same results.

Waiting on advisor approval and I just don't know what to do
smpalesh replied to DM7000's topic in Waiting it Out
Have you tried calling them on the phone? Emails can be easily ignored, a phone call not so much. I am actually kind of surprised that you have waited over a month for a reply and didn't think to phone them. -
Submitting an update to application (personal statement)
smpalesh replied to shubhamgandhi's topic in Waiting it Out
IMO it is too late. I'm sure tons of people think that they can improve their application after the deadline, after they look it over again. Can you imagine the hassle of having to process addendum's to multiple people's applications? What's done is done, your application is what it is, and hopefully you will be admitted. -
The wait list at Laurier is open until July 31. You may or may not hear any time until then. Definitely not necessarily a few days to a few weeks. You will only hear if a spot opens up in the program. Laurier has 28 spots in the program and they keep a waitlist of about 30 spots. So obviously not everone, or even a large majority of people, will get off the wait list. There is usually some movement but no guarantees. I am also waitlisted at Laurier but I will be removing myself from the list because I will be attending UofT.

Your status won't change on ROSI until they've made decisions. It is only mid-March, they are not making the decisions yet for the 2 yr. You can check ROSI as often as you want but there will be nothing on there until after they have decided your application status. Those of us who were able to check our ROSI status before the envelope it was only a few days before the decisions were sent out. And it was after all the decisions had been made. You will not here until early April at the soonest so I wouldn't drive yourself crazy checking ROSI. -

This was not true in my case. I am a UW student and I was able to check ROSI, but it was after decisions were made (before I got he envelope). It is probably too early. Wait until April. -

The waitlist remains open until July 31. You may or may not hear anything, there isn't any specific date - it's just if a spot opens up in the program. I am waitlisted for Laurier as well, but I am going to remove myself from the list because I am going to UofT. -

Re: UofT - Not sure where you are reading but 2 year MSW decisions come out in April. Directly from their website - "Decisions for the Two-Year Full-Time Program will be mailed out by mid-April." -
Not hearing back after acceptances and rejections have already gone out
smpalesh replied to vityaz's topic in Waiting it Out
If he is sure that acceptances and rejections have gone out he might want to send an email enquiring about his status. It might mean he was waitlisted. When I applied to Laurier they did acceptances and rejections first and then I heard a few days later that I was waitlisted. -

I agree with this completely. I am actually incredibly surprised that people are applying to a graduate level program in social work with hardly any experience. I don't think it is unreasonable in the slightest for a grad program to say, "Sorry, you need some experience, try again later." I also don't agree that it is impossible to get experience. I have 3 children, multiple health problems, and have been in school full-time for the last 5 years and I still managed to volunteer. I volunteer 8 hours a week on a crisis line and have been doing so for the last 5 years so it adds up. Showing a committment to the field of social work by volunteering shows that you really want to be in the field. I know that's not want people want to hear, but there are many qualified applicants who do have the experience; it's not all about what you can do in a classroom. Class work vs. field work is very different. -

700 is actually the lowest requirement I've ever heard of for an MSW. I think it will depend on the rest of your application and also your entrance essays. For what it's worth I got accepted to the advanced standing and I have approximately 2800 hours of experience. -
I would be taking the GO train, so I could do school work while on it. It would be a 2 hour commute one way and classes are 2 days a week. I am hoping to get my practicum (3 days a week) in my area. And yes, my partner is super helpful and is totally supportive of me doing the program and willing to take the bulk of the work with the kids.

Application Status--The most Stressful!
smpalesh replied to literaryhopeful's topic in Waiting it Out
I don't think they always update online status because I was accepted to UofT last week and my status still says "under review" -
Not a friendly offer, should I accept?
smpalesh replied to bellaflor77's topic in Decisions, Decisions
3.25 is a quite low GPA. I don't think it is unreasonable in the slightest for them to put the condition that you maintain a certain standard educationally.
