  1. Yeah I imagine that sort of thing happens. It's tough, of course. I did my MA from Chicago but was (I'm guessing) rejected straightaway as I have heard nothing yet. It's good that you're waitlisted at Rochester; do you have any details on that? How many admits, and that sort of thing? I'm waiting on Iowa as well; last year they responded around this date, so let's see.
  2. Northwestern interview invitations went out a long time back. While of course nothing is official until it's official in this game, I would not hold out hope for Northwestern at this point (if you have not heard anything yet). From that list, UT-Austin, Northwestern, Chicago, Brown have all responded.
  3. Really depends. My field (cinema studies, but I'm also interested in media/affect work being done at places like Duke, or broader media studies such as at MIT) has increasingly moved toward accepting people entering with MAs. On the other hand, in English, I hear that some idiosyncratic institutions prefer to admit straight from BA so that these admits can be "groomed" in the style peculiar to that institution. These names should be common knowledge in your field's conversation. Sometimes, though, gaining an MA from a top-ranked department can definitely help, as it can serve to establish credentials (apart from other potential benefits such as obtaining letters from major scholars, networking, etc.)
  4. Still very interested in hearing your account of Stanford! This was me earlier in this thread:
  5. Have you heard anything further about this? When was/is the interview, are they interviewing each potential accept (Northwestern style), have all interview requests gone out, etc.? Any details at all? Thanks!
  6. Could the Harvard admit please provide some details? Do you know cohort size/Have all notifications gone out/anything else? Also, a brief summary of yourself would help wonderfully. And naturally, congratulations!
  7. Perhaps we should try calling the Dept. to seek some sort of clarification? Edit: Followed my own suggestion. Emily was not particularly enlightening, but what she said gave me the impression that positive news goes directly from faculty to the admits, and from faculty to the GSAS. Edit 2: Aubergine, feel free to try your luck though!
  8. NYU/Iowa/Harvard/Michigan: No sound out of those places yet that I know of. Brown: I'm assuming you mean Modern Culture and Media. I called them last week after the first MCM admit was posted here. I was told that while the MCM coordinator couldn't give me specific information, all admit/waitlist/reject notices had been sent to the Graduate School, and Embark would notify us to check the application this week. UChicago: 99% sure all their admit/waitlist decisions have been communicated and we're just waiting on the reject notification now. UWisconsin/WashU/UCI: No idea; check the Results database I guess. I am extremely interested in your Stanford story, because I recently added that to my list for next round of applications. I'm very interested in how you pitched yourself for that one, what you'd like to do at Stanford, why Stanford, and how your interview went, and anything else you can tell me about the program, really. Stanford is typically not mentioned in the same breath as the 'canonical' film studies programs (Chicago, USC, and so on) but from what I recently saw, I'm very interested indeed. Do feel free to PM me anytime.
  9. You can check the results database to get a sense of when, on average, those places send out their admit/reject notices. Personally, I would not bother admissions committee this late with a new SOP unless you have something very radical to report.
  10. Without knowing the list of places you've applied to this season, it's difficult to make a suggestion either way. However, most of the more prominent programs have already announced their admissions, or are very far into the process. The exceptions that I know of are NYU, Iowa, Harvard, Michigan (and a few others that I probably don't know of) which still have to notify anything. Regardless, I'd say it is pretty far into the process this time to try and turn things around by sending in new material. Not everyone will have a successful season, given the severe competition all around (avg. admits seem to be on the level of 3-5 out of 100-150+ applicants). You'd be much better off using the upcoming year to gather up your resources and make another attempt in the coming fall, IMO.
  11. Not yet, as it happens. I am waiting on a few more targets which have yet to release any word (that I've seen/know of).
  12. Just curious: Someone posted an admit for Rochester which they apparently received via email today? (The post in question reads: "Full tuition waiver for one year, renewable up to three additional years. Teaching assistantship and stipend. Nominated for university fellowship.") Would someone like to claim it and offer any details? I'm curious because I thought Rochester was done notifying over the past week. Also, I'm surprised that the funding package seems a bit..lower? compared to other similar programs (the norm appears to be 5 years full funding + any stipend.) Is Rochester having possible funding issues? Thanks!
  13. Hey, I notice that you're a fellow applicant to Harvard's FVS. Do you have any inkling about that at all? Last year the calls came on Feb. 19th...
  14. This isn't specifically for this application season, but do we have any ideas about Stanford University's Film Studies program within its Department of Art and Art History? Notable names? Reasons to be interested in it? Strengths? Anything?
  15. Does anyone know what's going on with Rochester's Visual and Cultural Studies? There's one admit posted on Feb 13 without any other details, and nobody else seems to have received any word. Any further information re: this program would be terrific!
  16. Thanks for the additional info; would you also know if the 4 notifies have gone out already, or..? P.S. Check your PMs.
  17. I see a Brown Modern Culture and Media acceptance, but the date is off...it is still the 14th here on the East Coast, but the result claims 15th, via phone call. A possible international admit? If anyone claims it, please provide more details. Thanks!
  18. I have. And I have no news to report on that front. I, too, am trying (and failing) at counting the days until Feb 19 (last year's results). We will see, I suppose.
  19. For people who have applied to Pitt with a joint in English+Film Studies, do any of you know if the situation is the same? That is, have those admits gone out already?
  20. Just noticed a Pitt admit posted. Could someone claim it and clarify what the joint dept. was (German/English/etc.)? Any more details would be appreciated!
  21. Thanks for this information. Do you know if this will include the cross-departmental applications for Film Studies as well (Comp Lit + Film Studies)?
  22. Can any of us confirm that Berkeley, UChicago, and Northwestern have sent out their admit emails? (For Northwestern, this would be their interview invites.) It'd be nice to know which places to knock off our lists, at least for this time around.
  23. Looks like two posts for Berkeley now. Does this mean all the Berkeley positive notifications went out today (Feb 3)? Or do the rest of us have reason to hold on just a bit longer?
  24. Great news and congratulations on that, max. May I ask about your general background in the field/stats/research directions? Also, did your email make any reference to a likely incoming cohort size?
  25. DukeofEarl: nyfilmfest has already provided most of the essentials you're looking for. I shared your situation fresh out of undergrad as my undergraduate institution didn't have resources/facilities for much work in foundational film studies. As a result, I didn't really have much by way of academic work in the field when applying to Ph.D. programs. It's a good thing you're looking at MA programs as they can really help polish your academic profile in preparation for future Ph.D. applications. In addition to what you listed, I would mention Emory University's MA program in film, and an interdisciplinary MA program at the University of Chicago. The former is noteworthy because it is, to my knowledge, the only fully funded Master's program in film studies in the nation. The latter is noteworthy because it allows full-fledged graduate work across the entire Division of the Humanities at the University of Chicago. There are several threads on this forum about the MAPH (Master of Arts Program in the Humanities), and you're welcome to find out more about it. I can say that my time there definitely improved my applicant profile this time around. All that being said, your numbers place you in the upper-average level of competition (bear in mind that at the graduate level, the numbers often rest at the highest possible or nearby; full GRE/GPA scores are not uncommon). So what will really distinguish you is your research proposal, demonstration of academic work (writing sample), and the most important factor of all: fit between your interests/approach and that of the department you're targeting.
