  1. Darn. Saw an interview post in the Results from a fourth program I applied to :/ at least I've managed to get one so far

  2. I've got one. I haven't been hearing much of anything from any programs so far. I get an email titled "Your Application Status" from a program I applied to in November, and I got so excited. Well, it was just the school telling me that they've sent my materials to the department. COOL
  3. You're on fire, congrats!!
  4. I found this to be really helpful, thanks! But I always have a hard time thinking of questions to ask during interviews. Is it appropriate to ask POIs about the overall program, or should those types of questions be saved for the director of the program? What kinds of questions did you ask, for example, in the first interview?
  5. I've discussed this in a lot of other threads so this might sound familiar to some... My SO is not an academic and in fact probably will not even pursue a bachelor's degree. He just graduated with his associate's degree and is sort of looking for a new job, but also sort of waiting to see if I hear admissions results. He doesn't really want to move away for a number of reasons so I applied to programs within 5 hours driving plus one that would mean flying. We talked about it for months on end, now all we have to do is wait and see if I even get in! We've been dating for almost 6 years so he really matters a lot to me and my future. Good luck to everyone here!
  6. Could the person who got an interview at Rutgers Social please PM me your POI? Thank you!
  7. So glad I'm not the only one who made an excel doc of this
  8. Is doing a quant concentration enough? Stats and quant do scare me a bit, but knowing the importance of these skills, I've expressed interest in completing quantitative concentrations in any potential programs that offer them.
  9. I must have missed this back in December - could the person who posted the Dartmouth result PM me their POI? thanks!
  10. Starting to wish I didn't apply to TEN programs. That's 10x times the anxiety! Could be 10 rejections, or if I have better luck, some really tough choices ahead of me.

...just to quit if I get in.

I'm in a similar boat (change social psych for particle cosmo); I applied to 12 while paying attention to recommender connections and having a range of realistic options, 12 rejections will sting and I will have to re-think the whole strategy for next cycle, if any...

You'll have a decent idea by next month if you have a chance to get in. My SO is in the same boat. Uncertainty is good for neither of us. Last year by mid-Feb, I knew that I hadn't gotten any interviews.

As for all rejections, just remember, I know from experience that it doesn't actually kill you.

  11. Look at how many invites VCU Social has sent out. I crossed them off my list last second for geographical reasons. Dumbdumbdumb
  12. I dunno, I mean, a bunch of my deadlines just passed today. I think those of us who aren't applying for clinical might have to stick it out for a month or two to hear all our interview invitations. I think March sounds like a great time to panic!
  13. Congrats, that is awesome and so exciting! I also received an exciting email when I was at work last night. Pretty similar - my POI at one of the programs said that I'm on the short list! I'm hoping this leads to an interview invite! I totally wasn't expecting this so early, or at all from this particular program lol.
  14. I saw a post recently about an interview for Brandeis - is that person willing to PM me their POI? Thanks!
  15. Phew, glad I'm not the only one. Even when I add too much cream and sugar I hate the taste so I just don't bother. I don't drink alcohol either so I'm more or less a pariah in regards to beverages I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  16. I know what you mean - my SO has similar feelings towards his grandmother and before I met her I used to make him feel bad for never visiting, but now I totally get it. Just know you're not alone!
  17. Yes, I love pretty much all tea, and black is my favorite, but I definitely don't have it every day. My parents both "need" a few cups in the morning but I usually stick to water.
  18. That reminds me... I hate coffee. (cue gasps)
  19. I dunno, from reading what you said it seems that this professor is particularly tough. There probably aren't a lot of students who get As and it sounds like you tried really hard. If that is true, the professor probably noticed. You should schedule a meeting to talk about grad school. If you do this once in a while and take other courses with them you'll form a nice relationship which is what's really important for letters, not straight As.
  20. It's not too early (imo) as long as their letters are in. I want to thank them regardless of whether or not I get in! I wanted to do it before Christmas since all my writers celebrate, but I didn't get their stuff in time. I plan to send gift cards or chocolates next week sometime
  21. Getting into the whole holidays thing has occupied some time; I'm watching plenty of Netflix and working a lot; I plan to learn how to knit and join an indoor soccer league after the holidays. I'm also going to be spending a lot of time getting my thesis polished and published. I'm not letting myself get too worried yet. There have been a ton of results on that page but not a peep from my ten programs!
  22. Luckily, my top choice encourages this option. Their information gave me the idea! My professor approved of this plan because she was admitted to her program after doing very well in non-degree courses. But, I still don't know if this would be a good idea financially, so we'll see what happens.
  23. I've come to realize most people simply didn't know that psychology majors go to grad school for reasons other than to practice. The looks on people's faces are always like "Research? She's making this shit up"
  24. I'll chime in on the issue of POI contact - a couple programs mentioned on their websites that it was recommended to do this. I contacted those, plus the top 5 or 6 POIs on my list. I'm so glad I did, simply because I found out about a few of them retiring or not taking students. This saved me money and all the responses I received were very nice. I wouldn't want to apply to work with a professor that retired - that's probably an automatic rejection. But, I did not make contact with all ten programs. I ran out of time to dedicate to that process. I look forward to following this thread for other ideas for standing out in the crowd - maybe for interviews. That's something I'm not sure how to pull off!
  25. I'm thinking that I would try to put some money together for non-degree courses at one of my top choice schools, then re-apply there. Or if that proves to be unrealistic I would use my minor in public health to network and hopefully find a job in that field for a while - doctoral degrees in public health require work experience and I know I'd like it a lot more than my current job!
