  1. I appreciate both of your perspectives! I tend to be an extremely frugal person so I know I could make it work. I guess if I really felt stuck I could try to borrow from friends or family.
  2. Today I was discussing with one of my professors my options for my grad school living situation. I have a fully funded offer that seems to be just enough to squeak by in the area (as most stipends probably are!). She thinks I should still take out student loans so that I can have a cushion and maybe eat decent food. Do people do this? I took out so many loans for undergrad and I was looking forward to never doing that again. But she has a good point, maybe better safe than sorry? So, if people do this, how does it work exactly? I'll have my tuition waived as a part of the offer, so would it have to be a private loan instead of a student loan? I'm clueless!
  3. I'm extra antsy this week. I just want to know where I'm living in the fall!

Hang in there! I'm feeling the same way, and I probably won't know for a long stretch yet. Sending positive thoughts and hugs your way.

      Thanks! Same to you!

  4. Lol. My dentist, eye doctor, and primary care doc all had interesting comments for me. Eye doc even said something to the effect of "a PhD will give you the prefix but won't make you any money" he may as well have said "... Like me!"
  5. Maybe you can arrange a quick phone interview to assess your fit with faculty and the program. This is what I did - I'm pretty much in the same boat as you right now (but with only one acceptance). Since you have multiple acceptances and know you probably wouldn't want to attend this program, maybe withdrawing is a good option, too.
  6. I just want to hear from one more program! It's killing me!
  7. Did we break ze Internet? I can't load the Results Search, haha. A step in the right direction for my productivity tonight, though :P

Haha, thank you! Took it myself!

  8. Me too, please - there were two posts I saw, actually! Thank you so much!
  9. First tip for you is to take the Psych GRE. I didn't take it, but it's a must for your situation, to display your psychology knowledge. Your GRE scores are better than mine, but I didn't go for top programs or clinical, so maybe retake the general if you can. Maybe you could try to put together a psychology writing sample, such as a review paper. Attend psychology conferences and network - jot down any memberships on your CV. Psychology and economics are closely related and I don't even think people would think this jump is very unusual!
  10. I've printed posters on fabric and plan to keep them - not sure what I'll do with them, but they would make okay throw blankets lol :'D
  11. I seriously loved the interview visit I went to! I didn't know what to expect from the program and it turns out they are the coolest people ever, and really value their students' individuality and success over all else.
  12. Edit - woops, double post. Silly phone. Sorry mods!
  13. Reason number 17 why I moved out of my dorm and back into my parents house! Haha. I'm more of an independent person living with my parents than half the students at my school, living in the dorms getting weekly checks from their parents instead of working. But back to the original question here, I distinctly remember a girl in one of my seminars saying that she was only applying to grad programs that didn't require writing a thesis or taking the GRE. Real high standards, gurl.
  14. For social psych, is this the link people are using? http://www.socialpsychology.org/gsocial.htm
  15. Do you use Mint? It's a great budgeting app/website. Your groceries seem fine to me but I personally don't spend as much on eating out. It's personal preference but my budget is about $60 per month (restaurants and coffee shops - I rarely eat fast food and don't drink alcohol). I'm not in grad school either but one thing that started saving me tons was always, always bringing lunch to work or driving home to make/eat it there, since I live close.
  16. There are a ton of threads about this -- try a quick search under the "Applications" and "Letters of Recommendation" forums. I struggled with this for a while and settled on Starbucks gift cards simply because all of my LRs are no longer driving distance from me. In the mail they went, with a small thank you card!
  17. After three weeks of continuous silence, an interview invite! My programs are late bloomers.

  18. Success story: V 78% and Q 52% and accepted (PhD Social) in mid-January. Also glad I'm not the only psych major scoring in this range! And although anecdotal, I hope my post might give someone a little hope.
  19. I laughed out loud. Too funny
  20. Agreed! And I want to be able to make my decision soon so that I don't leave POI #1 waiting forever. She was so nice so I would hate to screw her over somehow. But it looks like my other programs are a lottt slower.
  21. It's been almost two weeks since I've heard a peep! Apparently even after getting an acceptance this waiting on the others still has the ability to drive me crazy
  22. I look ridiculous in a suit. I kinda really don't want to wear one to my interview.

Ha! I hear you - I'm going with a nice pencil skirt and a blazer for a more modern twist :)

      So don't! I didn't wear a blazer, just a nice sweater.

I settled on a polyester blazer and a collared button-up shirt. And a nice sweater for the other day!

  23. I agree with this post. I don't think a house in your budget exists where you need one to be. Newton and the surrounding areas tend to be extremely expensive. But Somerville is a great place to live if you find an apartment there!
  24. I don't think the rookie who caught the interception was expecting to get MVP of the entire game. Despite that being necessary for the win/amazing! Edit: Pete Carroll should have been MVP for calling that play :'D

I was disappointed that her area of research wasn't CTE or something similar!

Ha! Cool! I rolled my eyes that they couldn't name her "Boston-area" school.

Haha Gvh that was my reaction too! I had to google her and go to the second page of results to find out she's at Boston College :P
