  1. Sounds a lot like my parents. Only my extended family gets excited and asks questions. I actually live at home with them now and commute to school, so as you can imagine the idea of me finally leaving after 23 years is scary to them! I'm the oldest kid which doesn't help.
  2. Family party today... Everyone asking me if I've heard back and why not. And also plenty of misunderstanding the acceptance rates I'm faced against!
  3. Hmm, hopefully someone closer to your field will chime in because I'm not exactly sure what would be best for your specific goals. Clinics, hospitals, or non-profits might be good? Professors of yours or grad students might know specifics for your geographical area! If you want to stay on campus it never hurts to volunteer to help with research.
  4. You could always try shadowing or an informal internship. You might not need a certain GPA for either. I shadowed a clinical psychologist who worked for the state when I was in high school and they called it an internship. Ask around and see if anyone wouldn't mind. That can get your foot in the door while you network and find an internship for the future. The worst thing you can do is not try! Ps: my internship led to a job, which led to me realizing I will never be a practicing psychologist. So in the end it was an extremely important experience for me!
  5. Those gifts sound great. I feel like I could never pay back my advisor for all the help he has given me over the years, and I'm sure you feel the same - your last gift seems to express that!
  6. I mean, I hope the adcoms can enjoy their holiday breaks! I know I am looking forward to time with family, myself. Let's all try to relax
  7. Yes. Yes to hating all of these.
  8. I think I'm doing a pretty good job of remaining calm so far... I'm not going to worry about anything until February. My stuff has barely been in their hands for two weeks.
  9. Bought my SO tickets for U2 for xmas. Oh boy!

  10. I applied to ten, and while it was kind of tricky keeping track of things, it wasn't so bad due to my mega Excel spreadsheet! I have everything imaginable in there, including a column for each LOR writer to individually keep track of their submissions. I also included essential things like deadlines, summaries of POI research, GRE cutoffs, funding info, etc. If anyone is interested I could send them a blank version
  11. Related question - do people send updated transcripts? I'm about to get a 4.0 this semester with some important classes. Realizing this made me wonder!
  12. I can't help but notice that there are a lot of psych programs being posted about in the Results. None are for any of my programs, yet. But, I really didn't expect all that activity so soon! It is early...
  13. Sorry this won't help but mine isn't saying that. The admissions coordinator is nice, I'm sure she'll get back to you soon
  14. One of my writers submitted with his Gmail because that's the only account he ever really uses. I had ten schools and only one asked me to send to his school account. I didn't think it was a big deal...I've had no issues.
  15. I once emailed a professor because I calculated my grade to be a B+ and he gave me a B. I was kind of embarrassed but am glad I did (because I was right!). If it were the question of an A I would care even more!
  16. Um, well, I'm pretty convinced that I won't have this "problem"! If I somehow do, I will be looking for funding and "feel" of the department. I come from a small program and if I can repeat that I will. I also will look at/ask about job placement. I think I want to conduct applied research in a government setting or something similar. I would like my program to be okay with this idea.
  17. *waves* Good info and thanks lewin! I can add that APS is a really great/fun conference - I hope to be back this spring!
  18. I applied because the program is perfect for my interests. And I mentioned this POI after discussing in more detail how another one was a good fit. Something like, Professor X's research on Y is also of high interest to me.
  19. Eh... Depends on the program. I wouldn't assume anything. When I was convinced my letter would be late (he submitted at 11pm on the deadline day) I called four programs and the general consensus was that about one week late would be acceptable.
  20. A mix of social and general psych programs - I will pm you the list!
  21. I don't even know if any of my programs interview. I only remember reading that the clinical program interviews at my top choice. The rest, I have no idea! Hm
  22. My advisor said my undergrad thesis is publishable! I'm cautiously optimistic but also giddy as hell.

  23. It's hard to let go! Take a break for a couple days if possible then do what ashiepoo said.
  24. One of the programs I'm applying to told me in an email that they are flexible about GRE but like to see at least one of the scores above 80th percentile. I think a lot of them rely on percentiles as the current scoring system is still fairly new.
  25. There is really no such thing as reverse racism/discrimination. That would imply oppression of a group that simply isn't oppressed. You made a mistake if you wrote anything hinting towards this attitude in your sop.
