  1. Is retaking the GRE an option?
  2. I'm not familiar with Stanford's admission process... Sorry
  3. Doesn't mean a rejection at all. It's too early for decisions. Did you apply for PhD or MS? Usually PhD applicants should be contacted soon (mid-february) and MS applicants by early-march. And yes, some programs accept you without interviews. Are you international? What schools did you apply?
  4. I thought the same... I didn't retake the GRE once I noticed that MIT's quant average was 164, GA Tech 162, Berkeley 162. I guess they want the "balance" thing, and they might admit people with okay scores, but great background/research/work experience... Those factors we don't have access, so I wonder what's going on
  5. Thank you! You were actually the first person who told me something encouraging... I applied to UC Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, UF, USC and Boston U. I interviewed at UF, Berkeley and JHU. Haven't heard from USC nor BU yet. And I applied for control/power. Are you EE as well? What is your background? Where did you apply to?
  6. From a quick search: U. of Rochester: Ranked #52 national Rutgers: Ranked #67 national NYU: Ranked #16 national Purdue: Ranked #46 national

  8. I was talking more about the results posted in the result page, which are anonymous. I mean, I took the GRE in august, and when I got my scores I thought I met the cut off, but when I check the results page, there are just so many extraordinary scores that it makes me wonder if I should've retaken the gre. My scores were V153/Q160/AW5.5 (i'm international, hence low verbal) but now I don't know if that'll be enough to get me through the cut off stage, if all applicants have similar stats from grad cafe results page =( Also, I'm applying for masters
  9. Yes. I would retake it.
  10. Not a good app tho... It doesn't tell you the stats. Ate least i didn't see it
  11. Hi guys, I have a premium account at the US news report database, so I have access to the past average GRE and GPAs for the schools i applied to. When I compare those values with people who post their results here on grad cafe I see a huge discrepancy. Most of the schools I applied to have a 160-162 average in the quant gre. I got a 160 (80th percentile) so I thought I was in good shape and didn't bother retaking the gre. When I discovered grad cafe and started to see the results page, I just couldn't believe them! It's so rare to find people in that 160-162 range! everyone has 165+ in their quant score and that just makes me wonder: how?! Any of you in the same position? I found a big gap from the data coming from grad cafe and the US news report data...
  12. I called some of my schools today, and they were very friendly. Just don't call those schools that clearly state in their webssite: decisions will be made by xx/xx/xxxx. But if the school doesn't offer that kind of info in their website, I don't see a problem if you call 5 weeks after you submitted your app.
  13. You have to have your degree before the 1st day of classes. That's how it usually works. The thing is that you would need a visa, and that can take about 1 month (from i-20 to visa in the passport)
  14. Yes, I emailed them and I'll call tomorrow morning. Thanks!
  15. Hi I'm one of the "Latin Americanists." The only news I have is that I was invited to the recruitment weekend for one of my top schools and I had an interview with a professor from my top choice. Other than that... Just trying not to freak out too much hehe.
  16. When I click on "View Document" it is horrible, but when I download the file and open it in my computer, I can read everything. I am so worried this will affect the schools' decisions
  17. I remember submitting it and seeing the transcripts in excellent quality. It was always like that. I checked my apps now and for some reason I can't read anything!
  18. Guys, I am freaking out! I was just checking my submitted applications and I noticed that my unofficial transcripts uploaded into ApplyYourself are quite illegible. The transcripts I uploaded into the website were legible and very clear, but for some reason, when I now access my application and click on "View document," the version I see is horrible and barely readable. Is someone else having the same problem???? I am having this issue with the transcripts uploaded for all schools I applied through ApplyYourself. ((((((((
  19. Thank you! I'm just don't want to sound too pushy... I am honestly freaking out :-(
  20. Good evening guys, So last year (around october), while I was reaching out to professors conducting research in the area I am interested, I found this one professor who works at a top tier school doing research in what I would greatly enjoy being involved with. I sent her an email and -- surprisingly -- got a very fast and friendly response. We exchanged a couple emails back then, she sent me some papers for me to see if I really am interested in her research and asked me to follow up with her. Well, this school is very competitive, so I although I had a good connection with her, I was leaning towards not applying, just because I knew it would be statistically close to impossible for me to get in. Well, I kept applying to my other schools, but one day I noticed that one of her current PhD students had checked out my linkedin profile. I was like "woah, they might be talking about me, so the professor still remembers who I am," so based on that (don't judge me), I decided to go ahead and apply to this program. Shortly after my application submission, I emailed her saying "hi, I've just applied, and I am following up as you asked me to." And she replied in the same day: great, thanks for following up, I will schedule a skype interview in January once I've had the chance to review your application. My question: Ok, it's January 20th and I haven't heard from her, should I email her? If so, what should I say? How would I approach her? Thanks for your help! I appreciate it.
  21. My family is completely clueless about grad school. They were like: Why don't you apply to MIT if it's the best in the country? me: Because I'm not a genius they: Oh, come on, who would want to live in Boston? I am sure if you applied, you'd get in... It would just suck to live in MA me: yeah dad... exactly... I'd totally turn down an MIT offer just because it is in Boston... I mean, I've never been to Boston, but come on, I don't understand why it would be a bad place to live (except for the $$$$$). Anyways, my family thinks that get into a #1 grad school is super easy, because in the end of the day, who wants to go for 5 more years of school, right? lol
  22. I realized only this morning the role of that little red diamond in the results page... And now I'm freaking out with other people's scores fml
  23. Lol I submitted my apps in november/early december... So long ago :-(
