  12. Professor of interest, or in other words the person you want to work with (under) at the school you're applying
  13. I'm coming from an unranked undergrad to great PhD offers in my field. I wouldn't stress much with ranking if you stand out from the crowd and make sure to be on the top of your game at the unranked program. It might actually help your phd apps because if you are good at an unranked school, the professors there will likely give you good recommendations putting you on the top of your class... That is just from my perspective. I like to think that grad school is a job, so paying to work doesn't make much sense for me. I'd take the funded school and make sure to be the best student of that department. That will give u an edge for your phd apps. Congratulations and best of luck!
  14. Oxford is extremely prestigious as well! I would not be putting Harvard on top of oxford for prestige, but perhaps you have a different viewpoint. I would go to Oxford over Harvard given the circumstances given. Best of luck!

  16. They need to be taken in the beginning of my second semester. They told me this during the recruitment weekend, in the acceptance letter, and in the fellowship offer letter. So yeah, quals are taken in the first year at this school

  18. Hi guys, So I think I finally decided which school to go and am now making sure I am on the same page as my advisor... I am starting to get a bit scared about the amount of work I'll be doing for the next 4-5 years. Anyone else? Will I hate myself too much? Should I abort mission (just kidding)? Also, the PhD qualifying exam at this school is in January 2015... Which means that my fall will be very busy with classes, research and studying for the qualifying exam... I thought undergrad was a lot of work but lol it seems like it was just a huge 4.5 years vacation when I compare with the amount of work I antecipate doing during my PhD...
  19. I submitted my apps in november and got my first acceptance last week... It took me 3 months to hear anything, but when it happened, it came all at once (in two days I got 5 acceptances!) So chillout you'll be fine!
  20. In a day in which everything is done through email, you'd be surpised by the amount of information you can get with a phone call. Best of luck, and congrats on your u of t acceptance! :-)
  21. I just got a 26.5k a year offer... The school is in a small city, so it seems very generous! I'm really happy :-)
  22. I'm sorry, but I'll pass on your "challenge". I don't know anything whatsoever regarding medical schools or Rutgers, so since I don't want to confuse the OP even more, I refrain from giving opinions that I do not have
  23. University Of Maryland Materials Science And Engineering, PhD (F14) Rejected via E-mail on 14 Mar 2014 ♦ I 14 Mar 2014 contacted a professor, he let me apply but then no news from him anymore sigh~ "He let me apply?" I imagined a professor dressed up like Gandalf yelling YOU SHALL NOT APPLY
