London School of Economics (LSE) Scholarships? (or Scholarships for the UK)
Horb replied to Paper Moon's topic in The Bank
I disagree with a lot of this advice. If OP is going for a masters, they most likely won't get funded, even if they were in the us. That has nothing to do with field or department merit. It has to do with how schools structure their programs. Many schools in the US do have cash cow programs (NYU, UChicago) but a lot more, though you pay for them, provide the same access to professors. I mean, imagine someone telling you turn down Harvard Law because they didn't find you. You will have far more job opportunities with Harvard than a low tier school. Also, in terms of the withdrawing method: you will most likely have to pay a deposit that is nonrefundable and you will lose that regardless of whether or not you formally withdraw or do this odd waiting until you're kicked out method. I don't know why you would do that to a school, especially one that liked you enough to fund you. They clearly would have planned for you to teach or conduct research. It's highly unprofessional and you could encounter these people in your future job/field and your withdrawing tactic will be remembered. So, if you do accept and change your mind, just tell them in May when you here back.- 11 replies

I was concerned about hearing towards the end of April like last year. It seems that won't happen. Thus until mid April hits I don't plan on contacting them.
-
I was told for the language grant that it'll be later this month or early next month. Which last year meant April 17th...good luck all!
-
It means that they have determined whether or not you got the grant. It is neither a positive nor negative indicator, as people get it then get funded and people get that status and get rejected. It simply means daad in Bonn made decisions.
-
Oh I can never find these things! Thanks for passing them along.
-
How on earth you know those numbers? I've searched the website up and down and can never find much information. This is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing! I applied for GI in two locations, but honestly, as long as I get between June and August, I don't care where they put me.
-
So it seems like they pick those they want to fund then see where there are openings? Rather than picking based on who wants to go where.
-
Another amazing day of waiting! Good luck all!
-
Mine always showed up; weird.
-
My target institution was always listed...or at least, it was listed when selection made was stated (but I don't remember looking before)...and it is my first choice...I really can't take this anymore! Come on DAAD! abreak: did yours change from one institute to the second? Or did you just notice it being populated and before it was blank?
-
Question: did anyone apply for a short term research grant? I'm thinking of applying for next year to do work on some archives in Berlin, but wanted to know others experience with the application/research proposed.
-
Hi Gibery, What was the time difference from when you had "selection made" appear and "funding" appear? A week? Longer? I'm analyzing everything...
-
Agreed! I know I will have a good summer if I don't get it (I'm planning on taking German courses no matter what, but here I can only afford the once a week course and well...that won't help all that much with gaining fluency), but man, I REALLY miss speaking German on a regular basis. If homesickness for a language is a thing, I have it.
-
Either mail or email. I have no idea how you know which. It seems up in the air.
-
Mine says selection made still. I'll assume rejection unless US hasn't changed yet. Good luck all!
-
You must have gotten it!!!

One of my friends asked and still nothing. They are probably really busy and I imagine it'll be at the end of the month (fingers crossed).

DAAD Research Grant for Doctoral Programme in Germany, 2016-2017
Horb replied to ArchaeoSavvy's topic in Waiting it Out
Hi all! In "The Bank" we have a thread for people waiting to hear back. I just posted about most results coming towards the end of March (last year I believe it was the 28th). -
It all depends! One person in our thread previously stated that they were told end of March (would be great!). I might email Monday to inquire about results. I'd do almost anything for this award, but I am trying to realistic.
-
Hi all, I went through the last few years of DAAD and found similar notification periods, namely: Study: Late March (3/28/2013, 3/24/2014, 3/31/2015) Research: Late March (3/28/2013, 3/28/2014, 3/31/2015) Intensive: Mid April (4/16/2014, 4/17/2015) (though someone mentioned hearing at the start of March in 2013...) It looks like I may be in for a long wait...
-
When people tweet at them, they usually respond. But I'm to afraid to make contact, haha.
-
Haha! Well I hope you hear soon! I was on twitter to see if DAAD updated and someone (from I think Ohio) got a letter of acceptance in the mail, but they could have been an undergrad, which I think has a different process.
-
Hi Gibery, I forget, are you from the US (or applying from the US)? (It seems like we all have varying notifications times based on country).
-
Happy Tuesday everyone! May the odds be in your favor today (with status changes or ridiculously early surprise results).
