Things worse than getting rejected from your top choice program.
elisewin replied to Nautiloid's topic in Waiting it Out
getting asked a zillion times what's gonna happen with your relationship with your boyfriend when you move to another continent for grad school. -
That's a really kind and rational answer, Nautiloid. I really appreciate it--it's the kind of thing I need right now. I wish you the best of lucks!

I only got into my safety school, chose by someone else for me. Only one decision left, but at this point I can be sure nothing I've done over the past decade would get me in the programmes I actually dreamt of. I feel so frustrated about where I'm from and all I've had to do to have a chance... But it feels like I was wrong. I know, at least I got in somewhere, but I'm so worried about not finding a job afterwards because of its lack of prestige. Why did I even get the Fulbright, I wonder...? (I was rejected by everyone last year. Now I have an MA and still...)

Got rejected from Duke. Only Harvard (hahahahaha) and U Penn to hear from. I guess I should start looking for a flat in Columbus.

Sh*t people say when you are applying to grad school
elisewin replied to Clou12's topic in Waiting it Out
I think one of the weirdest things for me was when, planning my second round of applications, I went to my MA supervisor and asked him where he thought I should apply to this time. He said: "Harvard!!! Of course!!!". I left his office laughing--I ended up applying anyway and I am quite sure that it's gonna be a rejection (I think all but OSU is gonna be a rejection...), but his confidence (being a Harvard alumnus himself, I gotta say) strikes me to this day. -
There is a priority system for exchange students and senior residents of the coops (you can read about this on their website). So it could be difficult to get in, but in my opinion it is totally worth it. I would have tried really hard to get into The Convent at some point if I had been accepted in Berkeley last year.

Hello everyone! Just a quick question--can everyone who applied to Harvard this year see their decision online? I can't see anything... Thanks and good luck!

I'm seriously gonna have a heart attack. My external-fellowship-people are the only ones with access to my applications and they know Duke's answer already. But for some reason they will let me know "shortly." And I know their office hours are about to finish, so I'm probably going to have to wait until tomorrow

If it helps anyone, I have been told many times by professors from the US and advisors of a different nature that having an MA makes it much easier to be considered for admission at a PhD program. This is so to the extent that even though I already have one, the Fulbright Commission wanted me to apply to MAs in order to strengthen my profile for future PhD applications. Nevertheless, after 7 years of undergrad coursework and a year of grad school, I think I'm ready.

I went to every possible event at uni and ended up with more friends than ever in my life.

After reading to my mum the very enthusiastic emails I got from a professor offering me acceptance to their program, she says "why do they like you so much? You can't be that good, can you?" So... Yeah. -
Got rejected by my second choice. I really thought they'd waitlist me, though

If you don't want party all the time, stay away from Casa Zimbabwe (which I also found kind of dirty). Cloyne is nice but is incredibly big and the parties get crazy, but the people I know who lived there really did love it. The Convent, for graduate and older students, is quiet, clean and nice, with occasional parties completely controlled by the residents.

I haven't been able to sleep properly for the last two weeks! I also have an eye twitch and feel completely exhausted at work! I really need this to end! PS: Post a pic of your cat? -

Language proficiency for Japanese History PhD
elisewin replied to Gambaosaka1's topic in Applications
If you're British Fulbright won't be the fit for you, I believe. Are you in London, as your profile says? Would you like to meet up for some tea and maybe I can advice you a bit on the study of the Japanese language? -
My boyfriend is also willing to come with me, but we are terrified about it. Being Europeans, it's really complicated for him, and he doesn't wanna get married just because of the visa system. He'd rather get it on his own and if we get married, do it proper and beautifully. I will end up going on my own first and hoping and praying for him to actually find a job wherever I end up, something that he can love, so he can actually come. I find this very stressful regarding housing, etc. It's so difficult to plan!
