2014 Applications... waiting room.
RomulusAugustulus replied to BuddingScholar's topic in Art History
Huh, this is interesting to know. I also applied to their PhD and have heard nothing either way. From the results page it seems they can be bad about getting their rejections out in a timely fashion. How do you know the result posted was an American though?* *Oh, j/k I see that little A now! I never really thought about what that stood for (durduhdur). -

Resume Updated with recent fellowships
RomulusAugustulus replied to Johnny_Boy's topic in Decisions, Decisions
These are fellowships you've been offered to study at other schools? That probably isn't a great move. I think it's only appropriate to put a fellowship you actually accept on your resume. If you get a fellowship to do a PhD at school X, but decline to go to school Y, that fellowship from X shouldn't be on your resume. If, on the other hand, these are fellowships from 3rd party sources that would allow you to study at any school, then it's absolutely ok that you added them to your resume and that you sent the updated resume. -
Ellen Page was in Juno with Michael Cera. Michael Cera was in Youth in Revolt with Steve Buscemi. That one was too easy. How about: Tom Hanks, Ryan Gosling.

2014 Applications... waiting room.
RomulusAugustulus replied to BuddingScholar's topic in Art History
Anyone else get nothing from UT Austin? Saw the results come in so I checked the website, but its the same old "in review." I guess I shouldn't complain since I haven't been rejected yet, but I also haven't been accepted... blah, just being impatient! -

RomulusAugustulus replied to BuddingScholar's topic in Art History
I was wondering this too. Looks like in the past they've notified PhDs before MAs... but I guess they also don't accept many direct entry PhDs? On a related note, anyone have any insider info about UT Austin? It looks like they usually notify all throughout February with no rhyme or reason, but it's starting to get sort of late at this point. Maybe this is the week?? -
Need to formally accept before funding information??
RomulusAugustulus replied to deci:belle's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Definitely email or call the department (someone who actually knows something, like the director of the program)- it is TOTALLY appropriate to ask this, AND to say you can't accept without funding info. Funding is by department NOT school-wide, but I have never heard of a department in any discipline requiring a response before funding info is provide (note: this does happen at foreign institutions though), but it could be the case. I was accepted to Buffalo a few years back (I did not attend so I'm not "in-the-know" or anything), but I did receive funding info before I had to make a decision. But like I said it is department based. So email the department, and also read your program's website very carefully, do they mention funding? Do they guarantee funding (if they don't then, well, you could be out of luck and I certainly wouldn't accept the offer without a firm funding offer)? Do they note funding being decided after matriculation? Also, I hear that in the sciences funding often comes from a certain professors grant, so you could email the professor you would be working with as well. You certainly aren't required to respond immediately, so be patient, ask about funding at UB, and wait to see if you hear from a school that will offer you funding off-the-bat! -
A Hypothetical On Leverage
RomulusAugustulus replied to serotoninronin's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I have mixed feelings on the "two body problem," but I will say that if you want to try to leverage a department, you should let them know your situation before you/your fiance receive any rejections. Trying to leverage one of you in with a rejection in hand will be way harder than letting them know early that neither of you will be attending if the other is not accepted. Another possibility, if that doesn't work out and only one of you gets accepted this year, is for the one who isn't accepted to wait and reapply to whatever program the other got into. There might be some benefit to this as well, since they can make connections in the department by attending functions (and even lectures, etc) as an SO. -
How/when do you find out about your funding at Berkeley?
RomulusAugustulus replied to maelia8's topic in Decisions, Decisions
http://history.berkeley.edu/graduate/finances-and-funding-sources#Entering That said, I can't help you on when you will hear. I recommend emailing the department, but it looks like they guarantee funding so that's good news! -

Freaked out for a second when there was a fat envelope from Princeton grad school in the mail today, BUUUUT it was for my dad, who's an alum. Sigh. I am already pretty sure I'm rejected anyway, wish they would just let us know! -

RomulusAugustulus replied to BuddingScholar's topic in Art History
From what I can gather from the results search (and around the forums), the IFA tends to send out notices LATE. Like mid-to-late March late. It looks like they start interviewing PhD candidates in late February, so you'll probably have to wait a bit longer. Sorry! -

RomulusAugustulus replied to BuddingScholar's topic in Art History
Ah I see, that makes sense. Yeah, I don't think that status change means much (just they have all your materials), mine has said that "forwarded to graduate committee" thing for a while. I don't think there have been any posts about interviews, so I don't think any of us are out yet (fingers crossed). If we can judge by the results search, they seem to send acceptances at all different times throughout February. How stressful. They should just let everyone know at once! Well, here's to hoping we hear something soon, and good luck! -

RomulusAugustulus replied to BuddingScholar's topic in Art History
I was wondering about this too, but I think maybe they were confused? They said it said on the online status check that their app had been forwarded to the "graduate committee" which (it sounds like) they thought meant the grad school admissions (for the final once-over) rather than the department, and so if they hadn't heard anything from the department then they must be out. But that's what my application has said since I submitted it. Also, from the results search it doesn't even look like UT Austin does interviews...? I could be wrong though! Here's hoping their decisions aren't out yet, it's one of my top choices. -
Modes of Application Notification?
RomulusAugustulus replied to helpmegradcafe's topic in Art History
I have heard of a couple of instances where the school will actually post a decision (usually a rejection) online without actually emailing. I don't believe that is common though, and probably never happens for acceptances. So I would say, unless its April and you've hear nothing, it probably isn't worth it to check the online status. -
Contacting Professors Thread (specific questions pleaseee)
RomulusAugustulus replied to bsharpe269's topic in Applications
Just going to agree with the previous two posts, definitely don't boldface (or italicize) anything! I understand wanting to be sure you catch their eye, but boldface/italics always come off as slightly obnoxious (believe me, I had a roommate that used to email that way, it was the worst. lol). Can't help you out with the second question unfortunately (humanities major here), but I would imagine it doesn't matter much. Just contact both, no need to let them know you are applying to work with the other as well. -
Ah, the oldest question, hidden in plain sight! Sorry, just kidding. BowTiesAreCool is correct, always err on the side of formality. Is this someone from the department, not the school admissions office? I would google them just to make sure 'professor' is in fact correct (if you don't already know). But yes, save first names for when/if they explicitly ask you to "Call me Bob."

actual_entity, thanks for the info and congrats and good luck on your interview. I applied to Classical Studies as well, so I'll hope (for me and you, kingharvest) that they haven't sent out all requests. Scipio, I don't know much about the IPGRH program, but from the results search it looks like they don't start sending anything out until February. I would wait another week or two, and then if your fiance really needs to decide on her job, email/call the department and ask if it's possible they could let you know if they've made a decision. I know Michigan also sends rejections by snail-mail (ouch), so it can take a while to get those (though, of course, I hope this doesn't happen to you).
-
Congrats to everyone getting good news! I'm not really applying to Classics, doing ancient art history instead, and it is dead silent over there (at least from my schools). I was wondering though, if the person who got invited for an interview for Columbia, Classical Studies, could let us know (either anonymously on the results search or here, if you feel comfortable) who you heard from? Were you contacted by the DGS or a POI? And if it was a POI (and you don't mind sharing), who was it? Just trying to judge whether all interview requests are out, or if there is still hope. Thanks!

Is there any way to double check with your alma mater that they definitely sent the electronic transcript? I just sent my first ET ever and my school emailed me when it was sent and emailed me when it was downloaded (which is an awesome feature!). If U of Maryland doesn't email you, perhaps call the registrar and see if they can provide this info? Schools often take a while to update those status check websites for applications, but it doesn't mean they don't have everything. Have you already submitted your application? Most of those documents (GREs, transcripts, LORs) can be submitted after you submit your application. Also, did you have to upload an unofficial transcript with your application? Schools will often use these to start reviewing apps, even if they require official transcripts too.

For my M.A. (in Classics!) the first year we did not have to teach and the second year a portion of our stipend became our teaching salary (which really just meant they kept taxes because it was a salary rather than a fellowship). But we were not paid more the second year, except for a few students who were graduate instructors (taught a full course) rather than T.A.s. I think this is typical, but it will, of course, depend on your department.

Schools are already making decisions?!?
RomulusAugustulus replied to lucerovespertino's topic in Waiting it Out
Just remember notifications are made by department not schools, so it'll depend on your specific program. If people have already heard from the department you applied to that might mean you're out, but not necessarily. Some departments notify accepted students at different times, especially if notifications are coming directly from POIs rather than the DGS. -

RomulusAugustulus replied to BuddingScholar's topic in Art History
Pretty sure they don't call if you're rejected. I assume augustinian was invited for an interview or otherwise notified that he/she is on the "short list."
