So far I've been rather surprised with my workload? They cautioned against taking any electives in first year, as the core courses would be very demanding. So far it is pretty reading intensive, but other than that it is not particularly difficult. Obviously I am not complaining, I feel like in the next few weeks things will probably start to pick up. I'm TAing a first year intro course, so I know my students are going to start panicking at the beginning of October once their midterm is looming. I have only really had one evaluation so far and it was a brief, informal presentation. I do enjoy the fact that there are few evaluations worth higher percentages. Although it is a bit scary not knowing where I stand. I did have my first serious bout of homesickness last night/a little bit today. It is my first time living away from home, so I knew it would come at some point. My flights are already booked to go home for Christmas, so I just need to power through in the meantime

I believe that a really strong writing sample helped my applications. Also, both of my letter writers did grad programs at my top choice, which probably gave the letters a bit more heft

I'm mostly nervous lately, with a small dash of excitement. I just wrapped up my Bachelor's so I've been enjoying the freedom of sleeping in and catching up on books/tv/movies that I did not have time for during the semester. I'm mostly nervous because I lived at home during undergrad, so I am moving halfway across the country and living on my own for the first time. I'm more concerned about being able to handle shit on my own than the academics at the moment. I am going house hunting in June sometime with my mom and some family friends who live not too far from my school, so I imagine I'll hopefully start to settle my nerves by then

I'm still super anxious, but luckily I'm in finals week for the last semester of my undergrad, so I can at least focus my panic on something for the next few days

I feel similarly, but not because I feel like they accidentally admitted me, but because I feel like I should actually be doing something. I got an e-mail this week saying they received notification that I accepted their offer, and sent along a lot of links for further information on the school/town/housing. I have poked around all of the links, but I feel like I should be doing something productive, I just don't know what...

I was considering a job while going for my MA, but upon poking around further discovered that with my funding I am unable to work more than 10 hours a week in another job, so I'll have to get something that is only one or two shifts a week (not necessarily complaining). I am super glad I discovered this before making plans otherwise

I obviously have no experience with this... but my plan is to play it by ear. I always err on the side of formality anyway, so I am probably going to refer to them as Dr. Surname until I am told otherwise

I think everyone is much more curious about your reasons, tbh, because this seems like a pretty strange request. I don't think you can get them to reject you, personally. Once you send your application in it is more or less out of your hands, except for when you want to withdraw or something along those lines. I'm not positive though, all the same.

So confused by this post...

As you can tell from looking at my signature, I am probably just a little bit biased when it comes to answering this question. I've had an overwhelmingly good experience doing my undergrad at Memorial. It has a really great, close-knit atmosphere, and people always seem just genuinely interested in helping you out. It's also a fairly small school, in comparison, which means that you get to know people much quicker/easier in my opinion. I didn't apply to any programs at Memorial, since they have yet to develop their MA Communication Studies program (though it is in the works), but if I could have, I without a doubt would have done so. The Faculty of Arts is a very diverse, close-knit community in particular. Also, more biased... but St. John's is a great place to live. There is so much character and culture that you could literally not find anywhere else. Not to mention that it is absolutely beautiful, and the people are genuinely super friendly.... as in friendly to the point where it is kind of baffling. Strangers call me "duckie" and "sweetie" and "dear" constantly.

I tend to agree with everything that has been said here. I am also Canadian, and applied to four schools. I have two that were more or less tied for first choice, but I knew from the get-go that if I got little/no funding at those choices then I would have to go where my degree would be the most affordable. Whenever a family member/friend would ask which I was going to choose, I would say "Whichever will not put me in crippling debt". For those of us in the Arts/Humanities you really do have to take into account the amount of debt you would go in... Also, as you stated, prestige does not matter nearly as much in Canada as it does in the US. If you are planning on pursuing a career in the US after grad school, maybe the prestige matters a bit more. I do agree that the latter is your best choice, though

I e-mailed two programs a few days ago. One of them had a designated person to e-mail for questions, the other did not. I e-mailed the Program Co-ordinator at the second program. I've heard back from neither, but it's the time of the year when they're probably getting a lot of e-mail so I'm not too worried on that front. There is one person in the results search who has heard back from one of the programs so I really don't know

I've never thought that anything deliberately malicious was going on, I think that is very much a stretch. However I was paranoid when I saw a status change before an official acceptance, I assumed it was a computer glitch

I cracked as well and e-mailed the 2 programs I am still waiting on... though since my deadlines to accept/decline my current acceptances are March 21st and 24th I figured it was time to bite the bullet

Pretty sure Memorial does acceptances only by snail mail! (Unfortunately)

I do have a really good offer at another school, and they are tied for my first choice (but for different reasons) I'll probably e-mail soon asking when I can expect to hear a decision, since I have a March 21st acceptance deadline looming
