if you get rejected by that many places maybe you are not a very good student and would make a terrible psychologist. Please consider another career.

Dude, chill out. There is no reason to be an ass on here especially since the focus of this conversation is not you, but Flux1100 asking for advice. Good for you on getting into those schools, but unless you are on the admissions committee at those schools your point is irrelevant to the current conversation.

Flux1100, I think that unless you already have something lined up for the summer you should take your professor up on his offer. REUs are extremely competitive and it is difficult to find a volunteer position in an external lab unless you know someone. However, if you are able to get an external offer, I recommend taking it. Different labs use different techniques and skills and there is always something to learn from the experience.

Your LORs should be from people that know you well and can vouch for your skills, so keep that in mind. If you still need one more LOR, ask a professor that had and like if you can be a TA for them next semester or over the summer.

No matter what you decide, good luck! I hope it all works out in the end!

research at a different place. You need at least 2 letters from professors you worked with to be competitive. Chances are you will not get a paper from the summer. Of course you can work with your PI the whole year next year and get something out of it.

Adding to this, I had two letters from professors and one from a supervisor in industry. I did research under only one of the professors, not both. Granted, I did do research under the supervisor. But I would imagine that doing 2 years of research under the same professor is just as good as doing 1 year of research each under two different professors, if not better.

I'm going to disagree with this, if only marginally.  My letters of rec were from a course professor in biology, a professor that I had taken 4 classes with in economics (my minor), and one from my research advisor.  I don't think you need to have done research in 2 separate labs to be competitive.  Perhaps for the very top programs, but generally speaking I don't think so.  Of course more research experience is always better, but you should do the research that you feel you will enjoy the most.

SciencePerson101 reacted to LittleDarlings in When do you feel like you matured?
Do you think you were a mature person before you entered grad school? After? I just started my first job and I realized I am kind of not mature. I mean I can handle myself in a mature way, I know how to carry myself but at the same time I just feel childish.  I don't know if it is just being in a new environment with people who are adults and live alone and just have really adult type lives.  I just feel totally different from them.  Even reading threads on here everyone seems so old, I don't know if I am just super young.. which 23 isn't super young at all.  I just feel this total disconnect.  In the post about car insurance everyone is like "oh yeah my husband and I pay whatever in car insurance" and I'm like I have no idea how much my parents pay and I have no idea when I would pay for my own insurance.. I don't want to to be honest.  When did everyone grow up? I mean I know 20s is when major changes happen for me (everyone except me obviously) but holy shit! When did this happen?  I can only imagine how grad school will be. I did a web seminar for my program and so many of the people in the program were older like 30s 40s+  they are going to have like a crap ton of life experience stories and I'm going to be like.. "umm I just learned how to use a coffee maker".

With an attitude like that, I hope you never own pets.  They are NOT items that should just be given away on a whim.  And no, there aren't lots of "nice people" out there who want to adopt pets - if there were, the shelters and rescues wouldn't be full of animals awaiting adoption.

Pets are like members of the family.  You don't put your children up for adoption just because you are moving across country and it costs more to rent a place that has room for children than it does for a studio apartment.  In the same way, you don't put your pets up for adoption just because you are moving.  People that do really shouldn't own pets to begin with.  Now, I realize there are some situations where it is truly not possible to continue to own pets (i.e. if you are no longer able to care for them due to severe illness or injury) but otherwise pets should not be treated as if they are disposable.  They aren't.  They are living, breathing creatures with feelings.

So by your logic I should feel blessed with a third rated surgeon who failed anatomy but got into medical school because it is a "game". Also obviously I want a loser "psychologist" who "game" into grad school and somehow become licensed and I am suppose to trust that person with my mental health. Right.....

stop the BS. "Science is greed" Don't make me laugh. What hypocrites you people are saying humanities = science & engineering when you can't survive without your iPhone and other technologies. I can survive without knowing about some useless passages from Hamlet and what techniques Matisse used for his paintings. You can downvote all you want but deep down inside you know you are not good at anything else so you have to justify for your useless job/career.
