It's best to wait. You never know what could happen between now and April. You could get a better funded offer at another school. You could find out that a POI you're interested in at School A is leaving in 1 year or worse is leaving by September. Just as your feelings about the other schools have changed since you applied, they similarly could change about school A before April. You really want to avoid a situation where you have committed to a school and then realize you want to go somewhere else. If I were you, I'd use the time to communicate with my POIs at School A and find out as much as I could about the culture of the department as well as what it's like to live in that city. And wait for the other schools. Then when I have more information about the other school's decisions, then I'd make my decision. Just my $0.02. It's an excellent problem to have, congrats!

It's an interesting hypothetical problem - certainly a problem I would love to have as well, but I'm waiting on my first offer too. From what I've seen, any leverage you have is usually over the program that is not ranked as highly, and I've read where some applicants have been asked by a POI at the lower ranked school if they were considering multiple offers and where. The lower ranked program would then try to give you its best offer if it knows that you are considering accepting an offer from a higher ranked program. I'm not sure how you would bring up the subject though - perhaps by inquiring about funding, while mentioning that you have an offer at Highly Ranked Program X? Or perhaps by mentioning to your POI that you have the other offer and you're trying to get as much information as possible so that you can make the best decision for you?

Thanks and good luck to you too! I'm not expecting to hear anything from Rutgers until March - they have their admissions meeting on Feb 28.

Congratulations! Did you get an interview before or was it just an email out of the blue?

Nice. I was expecting to see UMass results today since they started sending them out on this day last year. There were also acceptances reported each day for the rest of this week last year, and a couple later on in February, so we might be anxious for a while yet. I'm in machine learning and I applied to 3 of the same schools as you - UMass, GaTech and Rutgers.

Some of those places aren't too much colder than Ithaca, as I see you've applied to Cornell. Vancouver can be pretty mild - they were worried that they might not have enough snow there when they held the Winter Olympics there last year.

It's on the left - click on 'Admissions'. The acceptance rate is there on that page beside 'Student Statistics'.

From what I've seen at most places, they reimburse you up to a certain amount. So you'd have to buy the ticket and then they'd pay you back up to a certain amount (say $500). You can always ask the grad or department coordinator at the school you're interviewing about how they do it there.

Thanks for the clarification MoJingly. I thought his post was utter rubbish, but I wasn't aware he's been trolling the forums.

Congratulations on your acceptance! That would be a good idea. Is this prof your potential advisor? If so, I'd imagine that he or she would want to talk with you about where you would fit in the department, maybe give you advice on what you should do if you were to accept and possibly try to convince you to come to Boulder. It could even be a getting to know you kind of 'interview'.

UofT is generally considered to be the best CS grad school in Canada - it's comparable to a top 10 US school. Waterloo just might have a better undergrad CS program, but is probably second to UofT at the graduate level. UBC would probably be next, followed by Alberta (which has a strong machine learning group), McGill and Queen's. I haven't seen Queen's compared in the same class as the other schools before. I've usually seen places like Carleton, Montreal and Simon Fraser mentioned before Queen's. Here's ARWU's world rankings in CS - they have the order slightly different than I do: http://www.arwu.org/SubjectCS2010.jsp

I agree with the recommendation to seek counselling. Your health is what is most important right now and if the stress is affecting your health then you need to do something about it. Remember also, that many successful graduate students did not get in on their first attempt or even on their second. This is my second time around after getting all rejections last year, so there is life after getting all rejections. You just got to pick yourself up and try again. So don't look at the application decisions as the most important thing ever.
