I'm wondering this too. I'll literally be rushing from my flight to just barely make it to the first dinner...I want to be wearing something at least somewhat comfortable on my 5.5 hour flight!

Yes you are in!! -
Good luck, you got this! I haven't heard anything back from ling programs but I think I only have a chance with one of them so it's just as well
-
LOL my mom is like this too! None of my family went to college and many of them didn't graduate from high school, so they assume that since I'm doing well I'll get in everywhere. It's nice that they're so optimistic, but they don't understand the struggle...like other people have said, their reactions sort of took the fun out of it when I got my first interview!

Ooh, I'm currently dealing with some overanalysis My friend spoke to a program I've gotten an interview at, and he said that they are only interviewing 3 people in my subarea. So I'm wondering if that means I'm basically accepted because they can't expect all 3 of us to enroll right?? They're also hiring a new TT assistant professor in my subarea so maybe they're looking to expand that section of the department?? ahh!! -
Do you have to visit once you've been accepted?
isilya replied to Carrot123's topic in Interviews and Visits
I mean, I don't think you have to, but it's a good idea to visit so that you can get a better feel for the department. I've heard that for some people, visiting radically changed their opinion of a school! -
Do these things help with Ph.D applications?
isilya replied to MastersHoping's topic in Applications
Oh also, yes to the other ones except maybe the non-academic conference. What exactly were these? If they're somehow related to your field I would include them. -

YES YES YES ALWAYS INCLUDE PUBLICATIONS!!! Sorry for the caps but most applicants would kill for any publication in a peer reviewed journal I just have one measly abstract submitted to a conference... -
This happened to me with MIT! A couple days after the profile view I got an interview invite. Today I got a notification that someone in LA accessed my profile so I'm hoping that will turn out well too

Take this with a grain of salt because I haven't been accepted anywhere yet and I don't totally know the process, but what I've heard is that it matters but only to a certain extent. One of my letter writers is very well known in my subfield, and collaborates with a ton of people outside the university. I don't think it's a coincidence that I've been invited to interview at a department where he collaborates with my POI. I also don't think it's a coincidence that I got into a summer program to work with another of his collaborators last year! Because he's well known and collaborates with a lot of people I'm applying to work with, I think his recommendation holds more weight since those departments trust his opinion. Just my experience though...

Someone from LA just viewed my academia.edu profile...looks like UCLA is starting to review applications!!!!

Sorry to hear that hope the rest of the application season goes well for you!!

Last year's acceptance timeline for PhD programs
isilya replied to Omnium's topic in Linguistics Forum
Berkeley acceptances/rejections all went out on January 28 last year! -
Speaking of "buttering" a professor up... One of my letter writers is a faculty member at a department I'm applying to. I'm unsure of when to send him my card/gift. I know he wouldn't think it's a bribe or anything, I just don't want it to create a conflict of interest. But at the same time, I don't want to send it after official decisions are completed which will be months from now! What do?
-
Definitely not!! I've been in panic mode for a while now...

Psych Results Page Questions/Clarifications
isilya replied to FinallyAccepted's topic in Psychology Forum
I'm surprised Stanford invites are already coming out!! I applied to a different area (Cognitive), but still... -
I think a gift card is totally fine! A lot of people do that. Personally, I got my letter writers customized coffee mugs that were around $20 (just ordered them today!). Putting together custom mugs was a fun distraction from work

I wouldn't worry so much about it! Eventually you'll get contacted with the news, it's useless to overanalyze everything now... (yet so hard not to!!)

My Maryland deadline was just yesterday, and my application is marked as "Under Departmental Review". So maybe "Under Graduate School Review" does mean that they're close to making a decision since it seems like departmental review comes first? What program did you apply for and what was the deadline?
-
Me too! We'll have to think about the details eventually so might as well do it now to keep our minds off the excruciating wait!! I've lived in California my whole life, so I've been doing extensive research on how the hell to dress for cold weather when I go to the east coast for interviews

Anybody Interested in Language Acquisition?
isilya replied to skatering's topic in Linguistics Forum
My field, psycholinguistics, is pretty similar. You can be interested in the psycholinguistics of syntax, semantics, pragmatics, phonetics, etc. In the same way, you can be interested in the acquisition of syntax, semantics, etc. I'm not very familiar with acquisition, but in psycholinguistics at least, a lot of times you will see faculty in psych or cog sci departments instead of linguistics. In fact, I'm only applying to 3 ling programs because my POIs at other schools happened to be in different departments. So I would look at some psych/cog sci programs. For example, Rochester Brain & Cognitive Sciences is FULL of acquisition people - Elissa Newport, Dick Aslin, some new asst profs (like Celeste Kidd & Steve Piantadosi). Good luck program shopping!! -
Honestly, I think your scores are fine. As long as you're not going into a math-heavy field, you don't need to have a super high quant score. Your verbal is great and your AWA is probably fine especially since you have an award proving that your writing is good! If you really want to retake the GRE you have plenty of time over the next year, but I think you're fine and you could be spending that time heavily researching schools and writing an awesome SOP instead (which is much more important than GRE scores!).

You're not doomed at all! Just because you got your application in early, doesn't mean they started looking at it. I've heard that at most places, the admissions committee looks at all the applications at once at least a couple weeks after the deadline. Don't stress!!
