  1. Haha, now this is just funny. I guess our forum names are a direct reflection of our beliefs now! Too bad gradcafe doesn't have one of those laugh-crying emojis
  2. My mom: "But [city] is so nice!!!" Yes, but if the department isn't a good fit it doesn't matter if the city is nice! I wouldn't go there! Gah...
  3. I wouldn't worry about not contacting professors. I've gotten interviews at places where I contacted professors, but I've also gotten interviews where I hadn't.
  4. Well at first I thought they were just confused, then it became clear they were just trolling...
  5. Well taking a PhD offer with no funding makes absolutely no sense! I thought you were referring to grant funding, not funding for PhD programs...
  6. Awesome!
  7. I don't know anything about UAF-Fairbanks, but I don't think linguistics is a dying field. I mean, it's never had much funding to begin with, so this is nothing new. It also depends what subfield you're in. Many of the departments I'm applying to have plenty of money (granted, many of them are cog sci or psych departments, but still).
  8. Oh hey, so if you were still thinking of trying to go to Maryland on a different day, Jeff Lidz told me that there's another prospective student who can't make it and is going Wednesday, Feb 18th. I'm going to try to go that day as well, so if you wanted to do that there could be three of us
  9. Haha seriously!!! I was asked to add a little bit to my diversity statement at one school so they could nominate me for a fellowship...going back and reading it, it's so bad why oh why do I have to work on this horrible thing again
  10. I think this varies widely...I got an extremely detailed minute-by-minute itinerary weeks ago for an interview that isn't happening until the end of February, but I'm less than a week out from an interview that I haven't gotten any itinerary for (I just know where I'm staying...)
  11. Oh I see! That makes sense. I wouldn't be surprised if I got waitlisted at Maryland, I have very very good fit with my POI but my fit with the department as a whole is just so-so.
  12. It's nice to have an official acceptance! Really takes the pressure off interview visits coming up :)

People (especially students) might ask that because they are curious. They mean nothing by it. I think it's fine to answer selectively and only mention definitive good things, e.g. "I have an interview coming up at X and I've been accepted to Y, but I applied to a few other places that I'm still waiting to hear back from." (They may ask you which ones, again out of curiosity, and again you can answer selectively).

A good potential advisor will be excited that you are successful and only say good things about those other schools. I was never impressed with the ones who bad-mouthed other schools I was considering. This kind of conversation actually turned out to be a good way for me to learn about people's character and how they handled possible disagreement. I found it very telling.

      Thanks, Fuzzy!

  13. Yay!!!! Congrats!!!!!!!! I'm so happy for you!!!!
  14. Overanalysis time! There are 29 current grad students in the department so that's like 5-6 students per cohort. They probably want to admit something like 10 or 11 to account for those who don't eventually enroll. If they're inviting 15 then that would suggest they'd admit like 2/3 of the people from open house. This is all insane speculation though, who knows what actually happens
  15. Yeah the last weekend of Feb is apparently really popular, I'm already doing 2 in that weekend! I don't know what I would do in that situation though... You could ask the other school when their weekend is?? I would try to get back to Maryland relatively soon though. I'm going to try to do an alternate time but if nothing works out I might end up just trying to Skype with some other people...
  16. Just got invited to Maryland, omg I don't have time for all these campus visits D: time to try to arrange an alternate weekend...
  17. Oh wait I didn't see all of these other posts for some reason...now I'm confused...I haven't gotten invited either, Chiki! It's probably by POI like interviews were, so I don't think it's too late.
  18. Wow they must really want you! Haha I was told the committee was meeting this week to decide who to invite to open house. So anyone who's invited should probably hear today since it's the end of the week...
  19. Your life is about to be changed...in a awesome/horrible way...
  20. It's awesome that so many of us Berkeley admits are on gradcafe! It'll be so fun to meet you all in March
  21. Congrats!!!
  22. Just to provide a different experience, I'm currently an undergrad and will come in with a BA/BS (double major).
  23. Yay congrats!! Are you going to the open house?
  24. Relevant update, I didn't send an email but I just got in
  25. Thanks chiki!! Thanks!! Yeah it was the funniest moment, I was in the middle of chewing a piece of food while checking my email and then I just started freaking out lol
