  1. Totally not selfish! I'd want to know too. It was an email, in fact I just looked at my application status online and it still just says submitted
  2. I just got into Berkeley I can't even process what's happening now ahhh what?! I don't even know how to react I was totally not expecting this!!
  3. Oh yeah, so I heard from a current UCLA grad student, they said that the admissions committee isn't even meeting until early February so looks like we have a couple weeks at least...
  4. No problem! I'm under the impression that the department can't take a many students for next year because this year's cohort is pretty big... Yeah I definitely don't think you need to worry too much about Berkeley -- all the people who were interviewed got the same email, and it was specifically about the writing sample. Good luck!!
  5. I'm an undergrad at UCSD. The department only invites people they are planning to offer admission to (basically the purpose of open house is to make sure that the people they're planning to admit aren't totally insane before they commit to them). And the Open House here is next Friday, so I'm pretty sure they're done sending out invites. About Berkeley, I have no idea, but my impression of my interview was that they wanted to clear up why my writing sample isn't connected to the research I want to do in grad school. So, I don't think it's necessarily the case that you had to get an interview in order to get accepted. Also, when they gave me possible interview dates, the absolute last one was Jan 27, so I think that since that's passed they're close to making final decisions!!
  6. Just had a 1.5 hour phone conversation with my top-choice advisor and it went great!! Our personalities seem to click and we also are interested in the same kinds of deep questions about language and cognition. Can't wait to meet the rest of the department!!!!

      How encouraging! Good luck :)

  7. Welcome!! Honestly, I would not email. You don't want to come across as annoying to the department... I would look at the Results Search here: http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php. You can search for the programs you applied to and see when they generally respond. In general, linguistics programs tend not to do interviews. These are the three common procedures I've seen: 1) No interview; if you are admitted you get invited to Open House to see if you like the department. 2) Invited to Open House, but not officially admitted. At Open House, the department makes sure you're not literally insane and then offers you admission afterwards. 3) Skype interview beforehand, and then either 1) or 2) happens. I'm not sure which programs you applied to, but hopefully that was at least somewhat helpful!
  8. The only pattern in responses I've seen so far is that there is no pattern! I've gotten interview invites the Sunday before Christmas, on a Wednesday evening, a Thursday night, the morning of a holiday, a Saturday night, and only one during a time that "makes sense", on a Wednesday morning. They always catch me totally by surprise! (In a good way of course.)
  9. I'm an undergrad at UCSD Cog Sci, and the interview dates are Feb 5-6, so I would be very surprised if they are still sending out invites. Not to mention that they're only interviewing 20 and accepting 8 this year.
  10. Yay congrats!!!!!
  11. Thanks!!
  12. The biggest surprise for me is how fun the process is at the interview stage! All of the blood, sweat, and tears from the applying part of the process were so worth it. I've had three Skype interviews so far and they have all been an absolute blast. I've had really great discussions with my POIs, and I can only imagine that the in-person interviews are going to be even more fun. I have my first one in less than two weeks, and I could not be more excited!!
  13. For real. I had been successfully limiting my consumption to one cup a day, but for the last couple months I've often been having a second in the afternoon and now I find myself tired and unproductive if I don't have one...
  14. Well, it seems like this depends on tons of factors -- how competitive your field is (and how competitive it is this particular application season), how many other people applied to work with your POIs, how many schools you applied to, etc etc. IF you get rejected, I'd say it's probably some combination of a particularly competitive year in your field + applying to 3 schools. But I wouldn't give up hope now!! It's barely the end of January!! Anything can happen, results vary widely across fields and institutions
  15. People actually put NSF results on the results search! Last year was the last day of March or first day of April, so we have a long time to wait.
  16. Yay!! This process is starting to be really fun! I've gotten so many different research ideas talking with my POIs, and I feel like my first year is going to be so productive and awesome!!
  17. Lol this happens to me too! And then it's a random wrong number from Michigan...
  18. Got basically accepted to my top choice!!! Dying of happiness!!!!

Thanks so much everyone!! I can't wait to visit!!

  19. Yeah, that's what I'm going to end up doing. It's not the end of the world, I just had a little freakout when I first found out because I had this whole "perfect weekend" picture in my head haha
  20. Rochester BCS Open House: 2/26-27
  21. Always the voice of reason, fuzzy I hadn't thought about it that way, with getting all the personalized attention! It'll be fun! It looks like I'm going to end up flying straight there from my last interview weekend so I'll probably be pretty tired, but it will be worth it.
  22. I just got an interview at my ABSOLUTE TOP CHOICE today! Awesome, right? It's also basically an acceptance, that's what the email said. But guess what? Usually their interview weekend is the first weekend of March, it's been like that for years. But this year, it's the last week of February! When I'll be at another school!!! WHYYYYYYYYY :( they said it's possible to visit another weekend, so it'll probably be fine, but still...I'm just feeling very sad right now and I just wish I could have the fun weekend with all the planned events and scheduled meetings with faculty... :(
  23. I would freak out and die if I didn't get in anywhere -- I've been explicitly planning to get a PhD since I was 14 and this sh** better work out!! Realistically though, I probably wouldn't die I would probably just stay in my current undergrad lab and get more experience. I'm not willing to do an MA program, and I also don't want to uproot my life for one year to get a paying lab manager position somewhere. I might attempt to get a so-called "real job" in my hometown, but the chances of that are slim -- my most marketable skills are data analysis, but I wasn't a stats major or anything so I wouldn't be competitive.
  24. I don't like Dr. Who. Not just because of the fans -- the show itself is terrible!!!! I just don't see the appeal at all, I think it's borderline unwatchable. But I'm an original Star Trek lover, which is pretty campy and has its own faults so I understand that people have their preferences I'm just sick of being forced by friends to watch episodes of it with them...it's just so bad...
  25. One of my very top choices historically sends out interview invites on the dates that correspond to today and tomorrow. I feel like I am going to throw up!!!!!!!!!!!
