  1. So weird you were able to submit without it -- the only reason I even found out about the supplementary form was because the system wouldn't let me continue without it! So bizarre... I guess I'll just leave it blank since they give me no way to find out. Yay, my last application is finished!!
  2. For those of you who have applied to Maryland -- how do you find out your Apply Yourself ID number? I need it for the supplementary application form but I can't seem to find this mysterious ID number. Somewhere I read that you can see it on the PDF preview of the application after you submit, but that doesn't help me since I need it now...
  3. I actually ended up not mentioning him in my statement - I mentioned 2 POIs who are more related in their research to things I've done in the past. Sad to hear he's moving though!
  4. I'm interested in language processing, so Ted Gibson. I might also branch out into some computational stuff, so I'm interested in Josh Tenenbaum as well how about you?
  5. Ooh I'm so excited! That sounds so fun. See you there
  6. Me too! I've been looking for someone to be excited with I'm in cognition so different field, but I can't wait to go interview! Have you gotten an email from the grad coordinator with details yet? I rarely travel so I want to start planning as soon as I can!
  7. Didn't start to feel real until I got my first interview invite a couple days ago. I was feeling so anxious and worrying that I wouldn't get in anywhere. Now that I know at least one school is interested it's starting to feel real (and awesome!!!)
  8. I know!! They send so many pointless emails...
  9. This seems a bit odd to me. You've already had previous contact with them and the know who you are, so they are very likely to personally review your application materials. Why send your application materials if they already have them? I just don't see what the purpose of this email would be.
  10. On the mobile site it only shows the country but on the full site it shows the city. And thanks, I did end up getting the good news!!
  11. Phew I feel better now! I talked about two professors in each of my statements.
  12. Yeah. Plus, depending on the school, it can be extremely expensive. At my school it's something like $1K per unit and classes are generally 4 units each...
  13. Don't feel inadequate!! UCSD engineering courses are ridiculously hard -- I'm an undergrad there and I hear so many horror stories of insane exams from my friends (probably the worst I heard was of some class where the final was 2 questions with no partial credit, wtf). I can only imagine how difficult the graduate courses are! You survived, and that is something to be proud of
  14. Someone from Cambridge, MA viewed my academia.edu profile!!! *starts hyperventilating*
  15. Yay!! Congrats I still have 2 to finish up but luckily I have all of my break to do them since they're not due til early January. I'm already anxious too...I freak out every time I get an email even though I know I won't be hearing back until at least January!
  16. Not in Anthropology but thought I'd chime in! I have two... First of all, WTF is up with the NSF GRFP document upload system?? It did not want to take any version of my transcript PDFs!! Eventually I had to just take screenshots of my unofficial transcripts, put the pages all together, and convert it to a PDF! Yeah, those blurry images look totally legit. /s Also, NYU is so annoying...once you upload a document, it's there forever. You can delete it and upload a new document but you have to name it something else! I happened to revise my CV a couple of times and now the final name in the system is something like "Name CV new" because I had used up nicer names in previous iterations...ugh -__-
  17. That sucks, I'm sorry I didn't have a problem when I applied (finished last week). Hopefully this is just temporary and uploading will be fine soon!! When is the application deadline for your program? If it's soon, I would email the department's graduate coordinator to ask if you can submit your documents some other way in case the website keeps acting up.
  18. Ooh so exciting!!! I'm sure they will email you since you didn't pick up, don't worry!! Congrats
  19. Clinical Psych is extremely competitive -- you'll be up against people whose GPAs are the same as yours, have years of research experience, possibly publications, etc. So I don't think having a Bachelor's in Clinical Psych will make much of a difference. It's great that you have good internship experience though! I would start getting more research experience now so you can have a year's worth by the time you apply next year. Your GPA is amazing, that won't be a problem. As long as your GREs are good, you get more research experience, and apply to tons of programs, I'm sure you will get in somewhere
  20. I agree with AvatarPsych -- you don't want to come off as crazy to the admin people! Even though everyone is going as insane as you right now (I know I am!!), it could look bad to the people you're contacting.
  21. I've applied to 6 so far, 2 to go. I don't think I could have feasibly done any more...I spent hours and hours crafting my "general" SOP for weeks, and specializing it takes me 3+ hours for each school, which is a lot to pile on top of the amount of schoolwork and research I'm doing now. I am impressed with the people applying to so many!! I just hope 8 is enough to get me in somewhere
  22. If it's not required for your particular program, it probably wouldn't factor into your major GPA, but I would ask your program how they calculate major GPA just in case.
  23. That's no reason not to apply, though! From what I've heard about GPA/GRE cutoffs at most schools is that those aren't necessarily hard cutoffs - if your CV or letters are good then they'll look at your other materials.
  24. This is happening to me too! And some of the schools that I thought weren't as great a fit, I had wonderful fit paragraphs and now I'm way more excited about those schools!
  25. Hi all, I got this email forwarded to me yesterday -- I'm probably sabotaging myself by telling so many people about this, but I think it's a great opportunity and that some of us would be very interested!!! From: "Runner, Jeffrey" <jrunner@UR.Rochester.edu> Subject: Please let interested students know about Rochester PhD funding opportunity in experiment syntax/semantics. Date: December 11, 2014 at 6:22:30 AM PST To: "Runner, Jeffrey" <jrunner@UR.Rochester.edu> Dear colleagues, I have funding for 1-2 PhD students interested in pursuing an interdepartmental PhD in Brain & Cognitive Sciences and Linguistics. Interested students should apply through BCS and mention an interest in the joint degree program with Linguistics in their cover letter. See below for additional information. DEADLINE: January 1, 2015. Best, Jeff Runner -- The department of Brain & Cognitive Sciences and the department of Linguistics at the University of Rochester invite applications from students interested in pursuing a joint PhD in Brain & Cognitive Sciences and Linguistics. The department of Linguistics (http://www.ling.rochester.edu/) combines strengths in formal linguistics--syntax, semantics, pragmatics, phonetics and phonology--with experimental and empirical methodologies. The department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences (http://www.bcs.rochester.edu/) combines strengths in language research--language processing, language acquisition, brain and language--with vision, and neuroscience, which includes computational neuroscience, learning and plasticity. The language researchers in these departments--along with those in Computer Science--constitute Rochester's Center for Language Sciences. We are particularly interested in applicants who want to investigate the formal syntactic and semantic properties of language structure using experimental and empirical techniques. Students interested in the joint Brain & Cognitive Sciences/Linguistics PhD program should apply through the Brain & Cognitive Sciences department (http://www.bcs.rochester.edu/graduate/admission.html), no later than January 1, 2015. Please mention in your application your interest in pursuing the joint degree with Linguistics. For further information contact Jeff Runner (jeffrey.runner@rochester.edu).
