isn't caffeine pretty much a drug?

Yes. Caffeine is an addictive drug. Safe in moderate amounts.

  2. Bosses.
  3. Make time to study.
  4. Go for it! Rationality is overrated. We are animals not androids.
  5. NSF apps slay me.

  6. I haven't started my essay yet but my plan is to augment and edit my NSF proposal which I am trying to make as detailed as possible. Details speak to your seriousness.
  7. I'm hung over after one and a half beers. blaaah.
  8. Western. http://www.uwo.ca/theory/
  9. Memorial, Dalhousie and UNB might be worth looking into.
  10. I'd start with emailing faculty. I have an upcoming phone call with a prof but we've exchanged a few emails already.
  11. I'm applying to 4 or 6. I'd apply to more if there where more that fit. I'd apply to as many schools as fit. A lot of it depends on what you plan on researching.
  12. That sounds legally questionable to me. I'd talk to residential tenancies or legal aid about that. Landlords are scum.
  13. For Comp Lit, I'd think languages, fit and research experience would hold significant weight.
  14. GRE scheduled. The countdown begins.

Best of luck. Create a plan of study and go after it. Keep us posted.

  15. There might not be a university worth calling by that name in 20, 30, 40 years if where lucky; 10 or 15 if were not. We should bank on societal collapse (or the rapture). There wont be jobs for us.
  16. Concordia, McMaster and maybe York in Canada.
  17. I've been noticing we all speak (write) in very vague terms about our research proposals. I am guilty of this myself. Are we all paranoid some one is going to steal our ideas? Are we also still struggling with translating intuitions and impulses into concrete coherent thoughts? I'm just curious.
  18. I wouldn't worry to much about not having field experience I dont think that is particularly unusual. Nor do I think being from outside the discipline is a big deal. I have a BA in Anthro and I didn't receive any esoteric preparations for fieldwork--no charms, no incantations, nothing. I cant even remember if I took a methods course. I don't have a traditional fieldwork experience in exotic locals. However, I've done a significant amount of social movement research and work in community radio which amounts to a buttload of interviewing experience. I also work in the field I want to study--livestock agriculture in the US. Some fieldwork experience is better than none. Do you have other experiences and skills that you could tie into your proposed fieldwork? A language? Recording and editing experience?
  19. I'd touch base and see what they say. It wont hurt. You can always apply to fewer schools where you fit better. Thats my plan.
  20. I haven't taken the GRE yet but it will be train wreck. This is undeniable. I have a history of spectacular failures when it comes to testing. Math is not my friend, has never been my friend and never will be my friend. However, I might be able to do okay on the verbal and analytic writing. I know I can have my LOR address my GRE scores but are there any other ways to do damage control? Will coming from a non-American undergrad program after a 7 or 8 year break from school affect the way my scores are perceived?
  21. I'd try Paul Rabinow at UC Berkley. He teaches in the Anthro Department and worked with Foucault.
  22. I use a handwritten planner and scrap paper--beside my computer, as bookmarks, in my back pocket, etc.

    NSF Funding

I've got another NSF and (Cultural) Anthro question or problem even...I don't think of my self as a (social) scientist or my research as (social) science. My research interests, influences and aspirations are definitely more akin to the humanities and critique than the sciences. I feel like this is going to present a problem. Has anyone else wrestled with this? Is this just a matter of spin?
