  1. I flip flop on GMOs as inherently problematic, however, capitalism plus GMOs is mos def a concern. Monsanto suing farmers for cross pollination and gmo contamination of fields being a prime example of the profit motive gone pathological.
  2. I'm not applying for an MFA but I am trying to be honest enough to stand out amongst the hundreds of other applicants. In my SOP draft I mention some sketchy shit to make myself appear more adventuresome than your average anthro student.

    Cool.

    2nd chances

I dropped out of an MA program almost a decade ago and mos def worlds away from who I am and where I am today. My grades from that era aren't an issue and I quit cause I was sick (both physically and of school). I've also worked as a researcher on an academic project since then and have good LORs from that research. What is the best way to deal with this in my application?
  5. I hear that. I'm hoping anthro programs can look past long hair, a big bushy beard and hand tattoos.
  6. I wouldn't worry about it. You don't want to go to a school where your hair matters more than your mind.
  7. I need a nap, a smoke and student loan amnesty.

  8. Lets do that. I was having fun.
  9. I hate the f'n feds. bastards.
  10. Anyone have the skinny on Anthro grad programs in the UC system, particularly Davis and Santa Barbara? Is it possible to get funding?
  11. Anyone else in the social sciences applying for this bad boy? Are all the applicants competing in a battle royale or only with other apps in the same discipline? Anyone else think they don't have a chance in hell but are going through with it anyway?
  12. Taste is instrumental in the social reproduction of capital. I can work with that. "Class domination" however conjurers up images of the bourgeoisie force feeding prols home cooked meals or the local Stalinoid cell hawking the Worker's Vanguard on a street corner.
  13. Soy, corn and most likely pharmaceuticals for animals raised in a Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation (CAFO) aka a factory farm.
  14. Class domination seems like a stretch. I think it's more likely a combination of nostalgia for an imaginary past of pure food and the endless churning out of affective feel good commodities that is endemic to post-fordism.
  15. Write a kick ass thesis. Try to get an article out of it. Use part of it as a writing sample in your app. I'd also suggest checking out various schools in the University of California system--UCLA, Berkeley, Irvine, Davis, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz. If your interested in religion and sexuality/gender you might want to see if you can find a gig that speaks to those interests. A theoretical example being a women's shelter run by a religious organization.
  16. Bread in the oven. Mmmmm.

I'm impressed! I used to make bread all the time.... that was before I started grad school. :(

Mos def from scratch. I'd take a pic if I had a camera.

  17. FUCK YEAH!
  18. I'd check out the websites of Orthodox Summaries. For example: http://hts.edu/faculty.html
  19. Most of the produce and meat are suspect IMO. Most of us don't want to know what meat eats.

    Mentors

My mentor is an old boss. I did research for a project of his for a few years. He's been great support in applying to grad schools and answering a deluge of confused questions. He is in a different field but has similar research interests so he can provide useful feedback. I imagine once I get accepted into a program he will still play some role in my future research.
  21. I'm a clean eater by default. I live and work on an organic farm. I'm skeptical that processed foods freed anyone from anything. I cook cause I need to eat. I also like cooking some of the time. I hope this doesnt make me part of a movement that would be f'ing stupid.

    NSF Funding

    Anyone else in Anthro applying?
  23. My test is scheduled for 8 am which is smack dab in the middle of my smart time. My synapses will be firing at full capacity. But I'm a morning person with a work day that starts at 5:30am.
  24. Beer makes it all better.

      Woodchuck cider is fantastic.

      Just a nonalcoholic passing through.

  25. I'd apply now and in your SOP explain how your work experience make you a good candidate for graduate work in Anthro. Your background should more than compensate for a lack of official fieldwork time. Don't wait your not getting any younger.
