It's a good sign. They are probably just trying to get all faculty on the same page. If they didn't think you where a viable candidate they wouldn't bother putting more energy into getting to know you.

Another thing to think about if you are committed to being an academic is working outside of the United States especially as more and more universities around the world are switching to or incorporating English as the language of instruction. An American PhD from a good school has weight around the world. Ultimately, we don't know what the future of higher education looks like I think it's going to get a lot uglier before it gets any better but I could be wrong. My backup plan if I cannot find Academic employment by 2025-ish is to raise hogs and make moonshine out in the bush and wait for the impending planetary meltdown.

It might be more useful to post this in the anthropology forum there are some archaeologists lurking around there.

I wouldn't assume equal performance or relevance for cultural folks. Numbers are hard.

WUSTL is finishing up campus visitations/interviews right now. If you haven't heard from them about an interview PZ your probably SOL.

Tomorrow I'm heading to St. Louis for a day and half to meet with faculty, grad students and check out a class. Any advice from GC folks would be great.

I had very mixed feelings about my skype interview with WUSTL. I would go back and forth between it went okay so-so and I bombed it obsessing over minor details. Ultimately, they thought it went well because they are flying me down to meet the department in person. I wouldn't worry about it too much. It probably went much better than you think it did. After my UCSB interview I was simply puzzled. It went fast and I feel like I didnt say much that was substantial. A week or so later I was admitted into the program. Your probably just over-thinking it. In the off chance you actually bombed it it's too late to worry about it. At this point I would simply sit back, relax and enjoy your intoxicant of choice.
