Where in Mexico? Depending on where you were thinking of going the Alaskan bush might be safer, which isn't something to take lightly... Oaxaca is nice though. You could also consider Nicaragua or Panama to learn Spanish if you really want to. Or, teach English in China/Japan/South Korea and make the big bucks!

I'm in the same boat there Patti. Now all my family members keep calling and asking if i've heard anything yet. I'm feeling pretty ashamed everytime they call and I have a new rejection to tell them about. I get why getting into grad school is so hard/competitive, but sometimes I just wish they admitted everybody.

BTW, not to be a D**k or anything, but that Chris guy can't really know what it's like for us peons that only have rejections and no acceptance letters yet. -I mean, our entire futures are riding on the whim of several committee members whom we've never even met. The stress is immense and people like Chris who already have 7 yeses sitting on their high horse saying grad school isn't as great as it's cut out to be make me sick. I know you're just trying to make us feel better, but it doesn't really help. Just makes me realize that there are people out there who are already lucky enough to have heard back from their programs, which makes me sweat that much more.

I feel ya. I have a hard time keeping secrets, so of course I told everyone and their brother about applying to schools... now I fear that I'll have to tell everyone I got rejected from SEVEN programs. PhDs in Creative Writing are super competitive and the whole application process is totally a shot in the dark (well not totally, but you know what I mean), but not everyone knows this. They'll just know I was rejected. Ugh.
There are some acceptances on the board from one of the schools I applied to... I've heard nothing. Assuming the worst.

I'm really happy to be in solidarity with someone at least... all those green signature lines are killing me softly. Now... should I move to Mexico and learn Spanish next year or move to the Alaskan bush and learn to hunt? (These are places I can hide/escape my shame)

lol YES!!! I'm ashamed of myself. All of my friends who applied to grad programs have gotten into AT LEAST one place w/funding. I feel like a failure. I actually applied to a teaching position in China, so we'll see if anything happens with that.

Still just the 1 rejection and nothing more from the other 7.  There is no meaningful historical data for my field, let alone my programs.  There is no applicable data this year, except a bizarre wave of rejection from Texas with no offers before it and no rejection to me.  Apparently emailing Minnesota gets you bumped to the waitlist, because that's the only result for my schools I've seen and they're all waitlists, no rejections or acceptances.
    That's cool, I didn't need this liver.

Not counting Monday, Februgatory has come to a close. With no resolution. Good thing three of my friends have birthdays this weekend- plenty of excuses to drink. I'm very happy for those who have had a successful showing this cycle... And it's not over yet for the rest of us, either. Though it's pretty much do-or-die for the next 2 weeks, for me. You'd think programs would bother sending something or another out after 3 months, but then again... that's what March is for, according to the past years of the results board.
To those who will have to repeat the process again next year: I cheers to you and your determination tonight.
@marycaryne you will be fine one way or another. Even if things don't pan out right now, you'll get some time to make yourself even more awesome by the next cycle. Keep your head up!

One of my schools told me the result may be out within 2-3 weeks after my interview. Over 5 weeks now and no news come. Sent email one week ago, no response
We are in the same boat. I just want to know my final result of that school, even if it is a rejection.

Agreed. And while my small team plans out their vacations, counting on the fact that I'll be there... I'm like "Nah, it's cool, I don't have any vacations planned past July....." ...except a permanent one.

Because it was for a senior role/leadership position that would have taken months to train for. I would have only held it for about 3 months and then would have left it vacant, leaving them to start all over again. It didn't seem right to do to the team.

I had to tell my current employer. I was offered a promotion back in October when I was submitting applications and it was obvious that something was up for me to turn it down. Plus, I'm a terrible liar. I also knew that I'd have to take off quite a bit for interviews and things. Thankfully my supervisor was totally supportive of my future endeavors. The only weird thing is now that I've been accepted, I'll still be here for the next 4 months or so before I move. But the team isn't really invested in me so much anymore. It makes sense but I also kind of feel like, "Wait, guys, I'm still here!"

My previous employer knew I was planning on applying to graduate school, and I wish I never said anything. She passed me up for a management position at a new location that would have covered me (on salary) for several months and the summer before grad school. She basically told me that she would hire me, but she wanted someone who commit to two years and I could only commit to 8 months. It's her choice, and some would argue for transparency- but if I didn't get into graduate school that would have been a nice backup for a gap year before I reapplied and honestly any person interviewing could guarantee (since she's not making people sign a 2 year contract) that they plan on staying for 2 years even if they only planned to stay until something better came up. It seems sneaky, but honestly the application process is dodgy and there's never a guarantee you'll get in- it's just smart business to cover your bases and unless they ask outright you're not obligated to offer up personal information about future plans.

It does not matter how "close" you are to your coworkers or how much time it takes to replace you. As mentioned above, depending on where you live, 2 weeks is the standard maximum in the United States. Whether you give them 2 months (which is ridiculuous) or two weeks, you will leave on the same good note. This is what we all want out of our jobs, a good note and to not burn any bridges. My husband and I both work at the same employer and yes, are two weeks notice will be given at the same time. The company is my husband's long turn career and he will transfer wherever we go, and depending on funding, I will most likely do the same.

My employer knew from the beginning that this was the end game.  I work in a closely related field, however, and I am friends with several of my coworkers.  They have been very supportive (I've worked here for about 18 months), but they do wish I was sticking around!  They've already made it clear that if  I don't get accepted that would be okay with them (jokingly!), and that I could come back after I got my degree if I wanted to.

For your position it sounds like it doesn't benefit you or them,  but it seems to me that all you really have to do is give them enough time to replace you once you get accepted!

I think it definitely depends on each job and the relationship you have (or any contract you have) with your employers whether or not you give more than 2 weeks notice. I think unless there is something exceptionally good about the company or your manager and/or you have some vested interest in how the company fares after you leave, there's no point giving more than minimal notice. My philosophy is that you don't "owe" them more than the standard 2 week notice just because the bosses were decent human beings that didn't mistreat you.
    So, in this case below:
I would actually wait until the very last minute (2 weeks notice or whatever your contract is). Being fired on the spot on April 1 will suck and you will lose on months of income.
And, in general, if they know you are leaving in 6 months (or whatever the number will be), it means you are almost guaranteed not to get a raise or any increase in benefits. This is also unfair, so that's why I would also advocate for waiting as late as possible. You lose almost all your bargaining and (limited) employee powers when they know you are leaving soon.

That is the same way I feel. Just because a temporary company is supportive, it does not mean you need to give them more than two weeks notice. I read a few articles that those who give the company more than 2 weeks notice, the company will retaliate and find a reason to fire a person or even make the individual miserable. I rather not take any chances and leave on a good and professional note without involving my outside work life with a company.
