  1. I got sooo lucky. All of my recommenders were very prompt and submitted their letters within a few days of whatever given time they had estimated.
  2. Very true... I was just trying to simplify for simplicity's sake.
  3. That's not really what rolling admissions is. Rollings is where say there's a deadline of Jan 1st and you submit Nov 1st... they start looking at your application on Nov 2nd and admit you 2 weeks later (i wish). Hard admissions is where there's a deadline of Jan 1st and you submit Nov 1st... and they don'e even start looking at your application until Jan 2nd and admit you 2 weeks later (yeah right lol)
  4. I just booked a climb over the Salkantay pass into Machu Piccu this week for early summer, and realize that I need to begin intense elevation training... but last night I just sat and ate buttery popcorn and watched How to Train Your Dragon for the 30th time while wearing my toothless hat and trying to not think about my future. Tonight will be different though.... I will watch HTTYD 2 instead. (for the 30th time)
  5. I have been known to want to stress eat... in determination to remain fit, I find that stress "sipping" tea or coffee, along with dividable snacks like plain stove top popcorn help keep me from putting on the pounds.
  6. I had to upload a scan of my official transcripts for one part of my application, and then physically send them in for a "proof of degree" portion of the same application.... So at least I know they got them, twice.
  7. Do you have a point of contact at the places you have applied (ie. your POI) If you have already spoken with them, you can always explain to them the discrepancy in your application. I obviously have never been in said situation, but it seems incredibly odd to leave out the fact that you are participating in a PhD program... even if it was in a different field and only for a short period. Its not even a completely irrelevant program, like theater.
  8. Let even higher levels of anxiety commence in 3... 2... 1...
  9. I would call asap and ask if they have received them and simply not updated the server.
  10. My only application isn't even due until tomorrow. I finished my app months ago, and my last letter went in about a month ago. The waiting is terrible... and then I have to remind myself that they haven't even started looking yet.
  11. I agree with peachypie... your methods are too much. If you want to read some papers by the professors you are going to meet, that's fine, but you really don't need to read into each student's research. They are there to gauge how you behave with your peers, and outside of the reference of a professor. I would prepare by knowing what questions you would like to ask both the professors and the students. (Sometimes the students will answer your questions more candidly). Love your handle by the way.
  12. There's an awesome birds of paradise documentary you guys can watch to pass the time... Its one of my favorites
  13. national lampoon
  14. Yes, he is indeed connected to some of my connections (research advisors, professors I know well, etc). We haven't really talked much since I met him at the beginning of the fall semester to discuss research, tour his lab, etc. I realize my method of reaching out again obviously doesn't work out for a lot of people... But you never know if it might be useful.
  15. I am chilling in the keys.... Surrounded by cab sauv that I can't drink for health reasons. The warm breeze and great reef side fishing are certainly making the wait easier.
  16. I friended mine on LinkedIn this week.... Since he accepts and looked at my profile, I'm hoping he'll remember me.
  17. I got really lucky in that one of my recommenders this time round... that I know quite well, both academically and casually is well known at UH and has many connections there. In fact, when I visited my poi and he found out where I got my undergrad, his first question was "Do you know Dr. So and so?" And I said as a matter of fact I do. (And he always likes my cat pictures on facebook lol. Not that I'd ever mention that )
  18. The only real advice I can give is even if you won't be viewed from head to toe... I prefer to dress fully for the part. It makes me feel more professional and prepared.
  19. If you can't get it to work... I would call up the admissions office and let them know that you are running into a problem and ask them to advice you how to remedy the issue.
  20. You can try to contact your admissions office and inform them of the mistake and attach the correct version. They may accept it... they may not. But it has worked for others in the past and is better than doing nothing.
  21. I think you are being rather abrasive now, as was the original poster later on. I had many of these types of jobs when I lived in poverty, and many of my coworkers also lived in poverty, and no one that I ever worked with wanted to work at these places. They were thankful to be employed, but it wasn't a job that many people would ever want if they had options. The original poster isn't in a bind to need to take a demanding/stressful/unappreciated job that he is overqualified for. So long as something bizarre doesn't happen, I can say that I would never take another burger flipping or dishwashing job ever again unless it was absolutely necessary for my survival. That doesn't mean that I don't appreciate or respect the people that do.
  22. ^^^ I didn't really take this away from the original post. I've worked fast food and it sucked... So I would describe said jobs as crappy. Not because they are beneath me, but because they typically suck to work at. Crappy hours, crappy pay, crappy recognition of work = crappy job. Honestly, if these jobs weren't crappy, many of us wouldn't need or want to go to college to begin with.
  23. I didnt apply to Rice because I knew that my gpa wasn't good enough. Also my research interests were so-so there. Dallas is too far away, I'd never make it. I thought about A&M but thats an hour and a half drive. Moving is not an option for me now, After last years let down... I just don't feel very confident anymore.
  24. My knowledge of large scale economics is pretty sad, so I don't really know, but I mean, oil is notorious for cycling and I now live somewhere where the city's foundations are all oil, and the job market is all oil. I'm only applying to UH this year, as I now live in Houston.
