Not too confident about my GRE score (159-Q 164-V 4.0 AWA)
sjoh197 replied to cybergla's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
I think it depends on how important this factor is compared to the rest of your application. 159 isn't bad... it's still the 75th percentile.- 6 replies

hahaha.... Houston is hot, flat, and shitty.... Smog and hobos everywhere. No water, no mountains, no hills, no nothing. We'll be moving a little further from downtown in the summer, but until then, I haven't seen trees, grass, birds... Le sigh. Not worth the high cost.

We're doing $1600 for 649 square feet. And we don't even live somewhere that's at least beautiful like the bay area.

I "friended" my POI on linkedin in early january. We had connections though. He looked at my profile the next day. I hope it helped him remember who I was? -

@columbia09 Not really... I mean it's not completely unheard of, but realistically if your company isn't supporting you and the department doesn't have funding, you're not getting in. -
haha... we do have that here. I might end up getting that lol.

We do have Specs down the road... it's supposed to be awesome. I always feel so out of place in the liquor store lol

Soooo poll time..... My partner and I are going to the house of one of his coworkers next weekend, whom he is good friends with. I have met his friend's wife at the work holiday parties and such and we are friends on facebook. Anyways we were going to bring a bottle of wine, and I remember that they like Cab Sauv and she is a fan of merlot... but since I can't drink I have no ideas for what wine to bring. Does anyone have any suggestions on a decent bottle that isn't super expensive? There were literally hundreds of bottles at the store. My partner doesn't really like merlot and is only so/so on cab sauv so he had no real suggestions other that "Freakshow"

Out of curiosity, do the programs you are looking at have either later deadlines, spring admission, or are you looking at applying next fall application season? I ask, because your approach to this could change depending on how much time you have. If you are looking at applying for the spring semester, or even waiting a whole year, you could easily improve your GRE score quite a bit. Also, you would have much more time to talk with potential advisors and "shop" around for programs that you might not have been aware of. I think a lot of the grad school app cycle is part luck. I think that you can do just fine if you keep trying.

I mean, it's also a great school and totally worth applying to even I it wasn't free, but I think people may just say why not? That's also probably why their results take almost 3 months lol. -

@columbia09 Well, the UH app is free for domestic students, so I imagine a lot of students apply for shits just because it doesn't cost anything or hurt to apply. -

I know but it still makes me frustrated and sad... even if it's out of their control. I guess I'm just worried that it will happen again this year. -

@nightfarmer I think using the site to obsess over your application and pour over everyone else's stats is probably why they are advising you not to be on here (Not that you do that... I don't know you....) but some/a lot of people do that and it can be stressful for them. Others, like myself, have no one to really talk to and it is nice to commiserate over what food we are eating, what netflix shows to watch, good news, bad news, etc.

@columbia09 In a way I am very happy that I didn't get in. I was only in my geology program for 1 semester when the application season rolled in. (I transferred to geology as a second semester Junior.) This year I really have a solid idea of what I want to do, what kind of research I really love, and what career path I am more interested in. I have solid undergrad research experience now, and much better relationships with the people I asked for LOR's from this time. I really love the research of my current POI and am much more excited this time round. -
@Neist While at field camp this summer, we had a lot of people (most) who bought cheap hiking boots because they are from the flatland and have never hiked in their life. There were a lot of bloody blistered feet, hurting backs, and screwed up leg muscles... lol. People made fun of my lime green lowas until I was one of the few people with comfortable feet after hiking 10 miles a day for 6 weeks.

Maybe I should have written in big bold letters on my application.... my dad will pay for everything lol. Last year I got a lovely email from the person I applied to work with at UH saying... your app was great, and your letters were great, but even though I said I was taking students and you should apply... I don't have the funds for an RA, and the department doesn't like to admit people that aren't funded. Le sigh. -
I certainly don't study it.... But my brother is a young athlete and one of the biggest problems his coaches say regular people have with exercise is doing it incorrectly. Running without the proper shoes or braces, lifting weights in ways that strain rather than build your muscles, not easing into your workout regimen causing injuries, etc. Also, I know for myself, I can't sustain high impact workouts because I've injured my joints (knees, hips, ankles) from running and hiking with improper footwear. I still enjoy backpacking/hiking now.... But I also have $300 shoes and all of the right equipment.

I have 6 pet tarantulas, a cat, and a very rude bearded dragon, a large plushie sheep collection, and an odd obsessions with watching pixar/dreamworks movies over and over again.... that's usually enough to scare away even house guests... let alone potential roomies. That's why my boyfriend is sooo wonderful.

@aksiksi I mean jesus.... im a geologist and I know how to put in a car battery. And his mom doesn't know "anything" about cars... except how to put gas in. He could have at least called his dad or brother. It's not like they don't both work on cars in their spare time or anything. Although I think he called his mom because he was too embarrassed to admit that he didn't know how to replace a battery? And a vacuum? You push the little power button and move it back and forth.... :/ I am concerned for the well-being of the human population.
-
@aksiksi My boyfriends twin brother (late twenties) recently called home to mommy when his car battery died... because "Oh my god I don't know how to take out a battery and put in a new one even though I'm about to get my PhD in electrical engineering." You'd be amazed at what people don't know how to do anymore.

I LOLed at the receipt one... that sounds like something I would have done.

@haltheincandescent I think if you knocked on the doors of people who were sick of the harp but not the owners... you probably won't meet any resistance or hard feelings. In fact... the neighbors might even join you in attempting to locate said neighbor. Also... have you thought about going to either your college library study rooms (if you're still in school) or a public library? They are often quiet and I've seen people doing skype chats there before.
