@geobsessed Mouth stuff is expensive. My last root canal cost me $700... like 3 months ago. This one will be $850. I really hate asking my dad for stuff, but I will probably ask if he will pay for it. Otherwise I will have to get a payment plan. The worst part is my next and very last tooth to be worked on is a potential root canal too. (That's why we saved it for last) So this is just a kick in the nuts really.

I just found out that I need another root canal... as if this week wasn't long enough.... now I have that to look forward to.

You should come to the dark side of geology.... we use microscopes. lol. And lasers.

My father is probably one of smartest people I personally know. He never went to college.... instead went into computer-y tech-y stuff that I don't understand... sold his company to Microsoft and now owns a yacht and has been "working" in key largo for the last 2 years. (He really does work his ass off, I just put quotation marks because it's so awesome there) He previously was touring America in a super awesome RV. "Smart" is a relative term. There are lots of types of "smart".

@Effloresce I personally tend to not think in terms of "too much" but rather "too colorful". I wear makeup everyday. A light foundation, eyeshadow, blush, eyebrow powder, eyeliner, lipstick. I'm not going to change that for an interview. However, I will change the colors. Nude and brown eyeshadow rather than a deep gold or purple. A lighter lipstick rather than bright red. Plain black eyeliner. No glitter. etc. But that is just me. I always prefer people to just be themselves at an interview.

I have people ask me on a semi regular basis if my hair is dyed. Its brown. Dark brown. Its my natural color. And for some reason... people think it's not. So rock the pink.... apparently people will think its fake even if it is your natural color lol.

A nice manchego with a sweet grape or apple is the way to go.

I like to sell stuff using facebook. If you live near a city or a college, there are often classified groups... Or marketplace groups. To me it helps to see who might be looking into stuff. Better than Craigslist.

Hey there..... There's a whole section of us geology applicants down on the menu. You'll be able to get a lot more focused info there. Especially on the 2016 applicants thread.

Why is "patience" a virtue? Why can't "hurry the f*ck up" be a virtue?

we just made homemade pizza yesterday for my hunny's birthdays. And strawberry cake. Tomorrow we get to go visit our new kitty for a little bit... So overall a good couple of days, despite the stress.

I can't soothe anybody. I make coffee nervous.

I was reminded today of a funny story one of my physics professors told me after doing a seminar on "women in science." She is a Dr. So&So and her husband was not. However, they would often receive mail from different organizations addressed to "Dr. and Mrs. So&So" and boy did that piss her off. She didn't care if anyone called her Dr., she cared that people immediately assumed that Dr. So&So was obviously her husband (and her first name was pretty girly... like Jane or Jennifer or something.) She laughed about it but seemed disheartened at the same time. Of course she was the only woman in that department that I ever met. I'm sure there were a few others, but it certainly must have been interesting.

Oh... no.. I didn't mean you. I just mean that people tend to do that. I would much rather people ask what geologists do than just assume we walk around looking at rocks like... "that one's a granite... and that one over there's a gabbro... and that one over there probably has some oil in it." Lol. When people find out that my partner works on parking garages.... they're always like "What? Do you like park cars or something?" Nope... he has 2 engineering degrees. He designs them and manages their construction. He works ON them.... not IN them. Lol.

@FoxAndChicken OMG.... mini rant coming. Most people are just like.... "Oh you're a geologist.... you just like look at rocks and say what kind they are right?".... No... no I don't. " What kind of rock is this one? What about that one? What kind of dinosaur is that" ... don't know... I don't know... I maybe know a little bit. I applied to do research with alpha particle and Ar/Ar thermochronology. I take lasers and shoot them at stuff.... and then tell you either how old the rock is or whenever the last time it went through a certain temperature range was. You can use that info to reconstruct mountain building, metamorphic transitions, and basin uplift/burial. Super cool. You can use geochron to date meteorites and stuff too... which is what I hope to maybe one day do. Geology is super diverse... lots of subfields. And my favorite mineral is graphite... its so under appreciated.

@FoxAndChicken Hahah.... yes outside. We're hiking over the Salkantay pass in May... over 15,000 ft elevation. Soooo, lots of prep on that one. It's basically a requirement that you enjoy climbing shit if you want to be a geologist.

Ive been painting a lot recently. And prepping for more backpacking.... That's a struggle in and of itself.

There are a lot of good threads on this over in the Interview Section of the Application Forum. A lot of help over there from actual grad students... not just lame applicants like us (just kidding everybody). Most of the time, a grad interview is more of a semi-formal process to get to know your personality and whether you as a person are as good as you seem on paper. You stats and research could be great.... but you could also be a sociopath. Interviews help figure that out. I've heard that it's a good idea to read some abstracts/conclusions of professors that will be there, to have an idea of what people do. Also, just have an "elevator pitch". A good 30 second- minute long explanation of what you want to research/ why you want to go to grad school. (Not all robot like saying the same thing over and over.... just a general idea).

My cat gets sick if I don't buy only the best premium, all meat, no beef canned cat food. She eats better than I do I think.
