Lol.... I have the problem of having really really dark brown hair and eyes, but incredibly pale white skin. Like... I'm almost reflective. So a lot of colors just don't look right on me. The good news is that I can get away with some funky colors though. My mother and I would go to the mall sometimes and pick out just butt ugly colored floral and patterned stuff to try on with our "good" clothes just for laughs... and some of it would end up looking great on me. :/

It's kind of hard to compare... but I personally remember the ACT and GRE to be about the same in difficulty level for the particular time in my life.... but they are very different tests. The GRE is really more testing your ability to reason out problems, read with comprehension, and then the breadth of your vocabulary. Whereas, the college entrance tests were really more testing whether you learned what you were supposed to in high school. Some people really struggle... some people don't. I took a couple practice tests and printed out some vocabulary and mostly studied while on vacation right before. Some people study for months and just struggle with the tests platform. Take some practice tests and figure out what kind of person you are. There are plenty of practice test books for ~$10-15

My application changed a lot between this year and last year. But that was the key... it changed. I really bolstered my research output in my last semester of undergrad. Having a gap year can also give you a lot of time to study more for the GRE if your scores aren't where you want them to be. You can also sign up for a non-matriculating class. And volunteer over the summer in something relevant. Or if you can find an internship and be able to include that on your application, that would really help. Also, I know that when I looked back over my SOP from last year, it was awful... and I thought it was so good when I applied the first time. Having some extra time to rewrite your sop and maybe get more opinions on it can help. It also sounds like you didn't apply/get accepted else where? Otherwise you wouldn't really need to reapply. Perhaps researching other programs that you would have a good fit in to help bolster your chances would help give you more options.

Gap year between undergrad and grad school?
sjoh197 replied to jamiehwang's question in Questions and Answers
I had a gap year this last year... because I got rejected last year and had to apply again. I was accepted this time for a PhD and my gap year didn't seem to have a negative effect at all... and I wasn't working either. Instead I volunteered. There are likely lots of volunteer options in a city near you, as long as you don't live in the middle of nowhere. If there are any museums nearby.they very often take volunteer docents. If there is an REI or similar store near you, they often put together eco-volunteer stuff, like planting trees and things. I worked on myself... my art, music, etc. I studied. I went back through things that I struggled with in undergrad and started re-learning them. I also bought some new textbooks that further delve into what I want to research in grad school. It certainly helped me when I went and talked with my POI. I traveled. I hiked the grand canyon, went reef fishing, am going to key largo next week, and am going to hike over the salkantay pass into machu picchu in may. All of this showed through on my application in one way or another. And more importantly... it was really good for me as a person to have some time to rediscover my interests and relearn some things. Burn-out is a huge problem throughout college careers... both undergrad and graduate.- 4 replies

Masters in the UK, or the USA? (aerospace)
sjoh197 replied to RobotBernoulli's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I'm not in your industry, nor am I that familiar with UK education... however, just reading.... If you are really trying to get into US aerospace industry... which it sounds like from your US pro list... then the fact that UK schools are good at placing their students becomes mostly irrelevant, as the US schools will have better connections and get you in easier to US AE industry anyways. Also, getting out one year earlier isn't much of a pro in my opinion. If it was the difference of a multiple year span, then it could be, but one year won't make or break your career at all. Also, it will be a lot more stressful cramming everything into one year, and I know that I personally would be incapable of properly learning what I need to in that amount of time. There is a difference between "passing" something and truly learning it... and I need time to learn. After reading... it kind of sounds like the only reason you are considering the UK options are due to finances. And that is obviously something I can't help with. But like hippy said above... you will have to find and justify the costs of both. Good luck -
You still have 7 schools left right? There's still a chance. Not that that really helps to hear. If all else fails... I applied to 4 schools last year (which is pretty average for my field) and didn't get into a single one. And this year I did, despite only applying to 1. So even if you don't get in this year... there's always the chance for next year. (With a lot more time to prepare) Not that that helps to hear either.

Effect of Medical Withdrawal/4 W's on a Transcript on Grad School Applications?
sjoh197 replied to mrs12's question in Questions and Answers
There is(most likely, unless you go to a very tiny school) an advising office at your university that can walk you through a plan of action in the event of a forced temporary resignation due to "acceptable" issues... such as health, death in the family, etc. They will most likely be under some branch called "academic advising" or something similar... not to be confused with student health "advisors or counselors". They would be the most capable of telling you what kind of repercussions you would face. Many universities have policies for things like this that can help you. You should talk with them in person to figure out what you can do. I had to talk with this office after I didn't return for an entire month of classes after my daughter suddenly passed away. They were helpful and helped me sort out my options to some extent. -
haha... I'm just picturing a bunch of angry Japanese guitarists and drummers.

It was just a form letter from the college of Nat. Science. I don't have a masters. I'm coming straight from Bachelors to PhD. I actually don't have any info other than that I was admitted. No funding info, nothing else. -

It's funny... due to being so worried that I wouldn't be accepted into grad school... I've been job searching for a few months now. And now even though I know I at least got some kind of acceptance, I keep impulsively looking at indeed and linkedin to see if any new jobs have popped up because its become habit.

Well... we can only have the fastest internet available or League of Legends and Mass Effect Multiplayer and Starcraft and every other game ever will lag and ruin the experience.... Or something like that. Idk. I just keep telling him he's more of a nerd than I am.

Project Fi looks interesting,,, I don't know anyone who uses it. Now if we only didn't have to pay $90 for internet :/

I won't be concerned with my name... so long as every picture of me within the department is this with my name under it...

I told my mom and partner(Mr. Boley) that I was eventually going to get to change my name to Dr. Mrs. Boley... but that I didn't know which would come first... the Dr. or the Mrs. Boley part. Lol.

Do you go to KU now? I can't remember.... If so.... SAP is used by accredited universities to report to the government whether you are still meeting the guidelines to be eligible to fafsa student aid and state or federally owned scholarships.

Over the holidays, my father said "If it cost 20 grand a year... it costs 20 grand a year." But I really hope I got decent funding and don't have to ask for anything. I have to go get a root canal and crown today... and the $600-800 price range is making me cringe.

Hahah... I was so excited when it happened that I just pushed the accept button right away.... I know that that is sooo bad. But this was my only application and only chance at my dream. So I knew I was going to accept no matter what the financial offer is. I just want to be able to tell my dad about it with financial info in hand... since I know that's what he'll be worried about.
-
So I thought I would be all worry free having an acceptance now.... but I don't know anything about funding or even what project I would be working on.... nothing. I need to just step away from the computer for a while.

IDK.... I sent in my official GRE score. And I emailed the grad coordinator and asked about "verify Bachelor's" on the application portal, and he said to send a copy of my official transcripts with my application. But I don't know if the official stuff was all required before hand.
