  1. What part of mich did you grow up in? So... the heat is one thing, but the humidity is what really gets you. It hits you like a wall. I don't know if you're a girl or a guy... but there are lots of tips and tricks you have to use if you're a girl who wears makeup and does her hair and stuff. Also, regardless of gender, I would probably recommend having a jacket or something in you backpack or whatever you carry, because the building are extra- air conditioned and the humidity sticks to you outside so when you go inside you start freezing.
  2. I'm guessing you got in at UL.... since there isn't anything else actually in lafayette. It's hot and humid... just like the rest of the state. There's not a whole lot going on in the city, although you'll be busy school wise anyways. Lots of rural tract people, and a lot of the people there are big into hunting and fishing (It's the only outdoor activity available unless you play football). People there "like" the ragin cajuns but in reality they're all still LSU football fans. I've been told the area around the uni is mostly safe, but I don't really know a lot of people who go there... just people who live in the lafayette.
  3. So... I'm looking for some suggestions on things to beef up my scary arsenal for using public transport to get to the university in the fall. I am a rather smallish girl, and there are a lot of really weird creepy people in the city. I already have my mace, and I carry a 7-ish inch gut hook knife, holstered. I don't have the money to buy a handgun and get all of the certification right now... although we are planning on doing that in the future. I get followed from the train in broad daylight by creepers, and I'm approached incessantly and made to feel very uncomfortable sometimes. I don't know what else I can do now.
  4. I am just as of yesterday getting my first correspondence from the graduate school in a form email saying that I will receive info from my academic advisor in the next few weeks. I accepted a month ago as well.

    Loans

No having to take out loans for your masters is obviously favorable to taking them out... but if that is what you have to do in order to pursue the career you want... then so be it. Student loans can cripple some people... but I've found that most people do just fine paying them off. They give you an awfully long time to pay it off. I think I have like 9 grand in student loans and my payment is $90 a month. Perhaps reapplying at non-private universities in order to accrue less debt is a possibility.
  6. I actually did research with another undergrad who was super not serious about the project... but had signed up for research credit and it affected his grade so he wouldn't quit. We were borrowing a geochem lab downstairs, and the person who ran the lab was really nice and really open for scheduling convenience and everything. He would frequently tell her he was coming at such and such a time... and then not show. Well, eventually she got pissed off and told my advisor about it. This kid then goes around and blabs to our entire peer group (<50 people) that I am such a bitch (literally called me "such a bitch") for throwing him under the bus. Never occurred to him that I wasn't the one who did it. And that was basically everyone's first impression of me, since I was a new transfer to the department. I did make one good friend who told me that most of the people in our classes found me "scary and intimidating" which is really funny, because I'm a pretty chill, regular person. I never had anything like that over in engineering. If anything, they were sometimes just a little sexist. Also... apparently most of our department thought I was in my late 20's? I know I have some different life experiences and all, but I certainly hope that the graduate students are a little less weird about it. Maybe I just look old. The cashier didn't card me today when I picked up a case of beer for my SO sooooo.....
  7. There is a sub-3.0 acceptance thread in the lobby with lots of people discussing your issues. You might find some help there.
  8. I think one of the problems with our program was that there were a lot of "options" for the upper level classes you could take... and some of them were really hard, and some of them were just easy A's. The only place I ever found the nerdier and more dedicated people were in the difficult classes other people avoided like the plague. Mostly math-based geology classes... like geophysics, and planetary geology, and seismology and such. I'm lucky to have a partner who is both interested in the work that I do... and smart enough to understand the idea. On a different note... I really need to buff up on some of my basic calculus, because my mom keeps texting me pictures of Calc 1 questions, and I keep having to actually think about whether I'm doing it right or not. Lol.
  9. I never had any of this camaraderie in my department, despite knowing most of the people. They just drove me nuts. Most of them were so young and self-absorbed. They didn't take any of their work seriously and just partied every weekend. I will be so much happier to be in grad school with people who obviously care about their education.
  10. The default answer on "Do you want to be considered for a work study" is "Don't know" So you may have it selected... even if you didn't really select it.
  11. I like to use Wayfair.com for things like computer desks and coffee tables and office stuff.
  12. I hate going to the hairdresser because the always want to "do stuff" to my hair. And I'm like no... Just a trim please. I don't dye, straighten, curl, blow dry, nothing. And they always want to make things complicated. I finally found this guy that does exactly what I want.
  13. The part I didn't get was that I applied there last year for a masters and they told me that I had great lor's and a good application but they didn't have enough funding for me because they were prioritizing phd students, so I was denied. So that was either a b.s. way to say "you suck" or I'm just a confused person lol. Because I feel like an unfunded masters is a lot different than an unfunded phd. What is you opinion on ability to find funding after self funding for one year?
  14. Lol... we literally drove across state, viewed apartments, and signed a lease, got approved, whatever... all in 24 hours. Some places get you through fast and some don't.
  15. UH isn't private... Rice is. If they give me in state its about $3500-$5000 a semester. I'm more concerned about the whole alienation "looked down on thing". I don't have any real living expenses. My SO makes enough for us to both live on comfortably. My father has offered to help me pay for school, but I don't want to ask him to help me pay for multiple years of it. I'm just not sure of the likelihood of securing funding later if I'm not getting any now.
  16. Well, if I don't try then my career in geology is pretty much over soooo....
  17. I guess maybe some people might reject at april 15th. So, maybe I will find something out then.
  18. So I asked the graduate advisor if people get off the funding waitlist often... and all I got was "I can't say at this point. Sorry." So now I'm depressed.
  19. I've been looking for outside funding... but am struggling to find anything I am eligible for.
  20. So apparently I am on the waitlist for funding...... dreams are slowly being choked.
  21. idk, despite living in texas since last June, they classified me as a non-resident. And that's awfully expensive lol.
  22. So I found out that I am apparently on a funding waitlist... and there is no indication on if/when i will receive any or any word.
  23. @kseeful @hippyscientist I was waiting for funding info before I told most people. I told my partner and my parents... but that was about it. I would like to know if I got an assistantship first.
  24. glad to help. almost all uni's have an internal or institutional research division that posts all that stuff. You should just google your uni name with some combo of the words above.
