  1. Did you hear back from UH too?
  2. You should post this down on the menu under Earth Science.... that's where all us geology folks hang out. Probably a lot more insight there.
  3. I just got an answer yesterday and it was a yes. It just depends on the program and when they typically send things out.
  4. There's a lot of good answers here, and as someone who as dealt with this and major anxiety... Just think of it as having planned a huge super important party for months, and then suddenly eating way too much awesome sugary cake and drank a little too much at the party and then completely crashing afterwards. Doesn't mean the party and cake were bad, just means your body I recouping. Just give yourself time along with taking care of yourself. Eat right, sleep well, exercise. If the depression persists then you might want to see a doctor. But I know that I tend to crash into a so called depression after severe anxiety and can usually overcome it naturally with some time and commitment.
  5. I did, got accepted for a PhD. No word on funding or anything, but I'm excited regardless
  6. I did it.... I did it... I got in...
  7. I did it.... I did it... I got in...
  8. I have literally refreshed my email and admissions portal like 5 times this morning and it's not even 10:00. It is going to be a very long week.
  9. Just remember that Spirit charges you for a carry on and stuff and factor that into your prices.
  10. Well so much for decisions this week right? :/
  11. OH MY GOD.... my status is still "application received." I don't think they're actually going to change it until decisions are out.
  12. As far as getting back useful feedback... this is still a really busy time of year for contacting people involved with admissions. Perhaps waiting a bit longer to ask would help.
  13. I'm not in English.... but if you already have a Master's of Arts in English and they are offering you a another Master's in English... that just seems really ridiculous. You already have one, you don't need another. Is this the only place that you applied? If not, I would hope for acceptance at another PhD program.
  14. Well, I doubt that I will have any word today.... maybe next week. But at least it should be a good weekend/next week. 1. Our new kitty should come home either this weekend or early next week. And its my kitty's birthday tomorrow. Yay. 2. My partner bought me a beautiful Brazilian Raintree Bonsai and it should get here next week. He was so excited that he couldn't even wait for it to get here to tell me. 3. We're going to IKEA this weekend to hopefully pick out a coffee table after 9 months of putting our cups on the floor. 4. I just bought the most beautiful clump of shasta daisies and my desert rose is blooming... so it finally looks like spring.
  15. I agree that those comments would get old. That was how my stepfather (who funded none of my education) was to the point that I never wanted to visit anymore. Thankfully my mom divorced him halfway through my college career. It's funny, because I grew up pretty poor, and have never actually asked my father for money expect for dental crowns that are like $700 each. And I always feel really embarrassed/guilty/I'm not sure what when I ask. I think he feels kinda bad that I spent my whole college fund on my daughter's funeral. At least I don't have to burden my partner with substantial student loan debt. We're still trying to pay off his credit card :/
  16. My father helped me pay for my undergrad although I had a full tuition scholarship... and offered to pay for my grad school. I know that there are plenty of kids out there that would abuse this... but not once did my father ever ask me what my gpa was... how I was doing in my classes grade wise. Nothing. He offered me the help - no strings attached, and for that I greatly respected him. He did however often ask me about my well - being and how I felt things were going college wise. I guess it just depends on people's relationship with their kids and whether they view them as responsible or not. I think this has less to do with it being "childish" and whether or not these are the type of people to hold it over your head and treat you like a child because you "owe" them for what they did. Or who will attempt to control your life choices with financial offerings. If they are not these type of people, then I see absolutely nothing wrong with accepting such a great gift.
  17. I've been job searching for quite some time now... and I have ask.. When did "entry level" suddenly = 3-6 years experience? o.O
  18. @samsonite2pv I was just asking because apparently some people lie about having offers to "hurry up admission results" or to "make themselves look better"? I always thought it was rather stupid actually. Since you are not one of those people... I wouldn't see the harm in saying something along the lines of... Thanks for the info. I haven't received an offer yet from any of the other places, but I look forward to hearing your later decision. Obviously say it all professional like
  19. Did you tell them that you had other offers? Or are they just making that assumption?
  20. If it makes you feel any better, I've heard a lot of people say that some professors give out the informal info in advance... and others just don't. I guess it's a personal preference type thing, or maybe a reflection on how busy they are at the moment. So there's still a lot of chance
  21. One of the people who applied to my program said that their POI said that decisions should be made this week.... but it's already wednesday... so I'm not really sure that that will happen.
  22. @columbia09 I applied to work with Peter Copeland. He mostly does thermochron work on Himalayan rock. All of the work I've done so far has been geochron work in 2 regions of the himalayas. But he more recently started doing work on He-thermochron on calcites... and its absolutely fascinating. Especially because he is basically helping narrow down the ability to date basin thermal evolution... since mudstones don't usually have a high concentration of U-rich or K/Ar rich minerals. I was so excited when I met him that I probably sounded like a complete buffoon. Or at least like a giddy 13 year old girl meeting Justin Bieber. Lol. I didn't know that results were likely to be made this week. That is helpful info to have I guess.
  23. I was so lucky to have really great connections with my Letter Writers, with one of them being well know and friendly with other people at UH's EAS department. When my POI asked if I knew "so and so" and then said if I could get a letter from them it would be really beneficial... I was probably a little too enthusiastic about it all. Lol. @columbia09 I've also heard that for someone with a good gpa, which you have... the GRE scores really aren't as important as the other things. My gpa is pretty terrible, so I aimed for a higher score.... although I only got a 159 on the quant section. I'm not bad at math, or "math reasoning", I'm just slow. And it hasn't gotten better in all these years... so I'm pretty happy with that score I guess. But regardless... I don't think it much matters for you now. If you don't end up with any more offers, I think it would be unwise to turn down the offer you have now, especially since its your second application cycle.
  24. Nah... I only applied to UH, since my partner got a wonderfully awesome job in Houston and I'm not really able to go elsewhere now. Although, when I say it like that it makes it sound like a last resort... but its not like that. I really like the dept. and I really like my POI both as a person and his research. It lines up with my interests to a T. It would be an amazing opportunity to go there. I don't really care for texas, and will be happy to move a few years down the road. According to the results search, the earliest UH has ever sent out a result for geology is March 7th and most years it was between mid march and mid april. So I'm not really worried yet. (That's a lie... I've refreshed the admissions portal 10 times a day since a month before the application was even due).
  25. Unfortunately there is a huge difference between being a "top" student and being a "good" student. As sickslickensides said... luck isn't really involved when top students get inundated with offers.... however, once you go a little further down the list to people who weren't top students... luck does begin to play in some. And it does become a bit of a numbers game... you can't get 10 offers if you only apply to 4 schools and such. At least you have a funded offer... it is much better than nothing. I will be very happy when this month is over because hopefully I will have a decision and be able to move on with my life, whether it is a yes or no. (Although I really, really, really hope its a yes.)
