It seems cool until you continuously have people touch the screen on accident and move everything you're doing lol. Maybe as they become more prevalent.. less people will touch. Also.. It would be cool if it was one of those convertible computers, but it's awkward to touch "upright" rather than touching "down" at a tablet or phone. Maybe I'll get a convertible for my next computer. That will be a while though (knock on wood).

Am I eligible for any engineering graduate programs?
sjoh197 replied to Haines15's question in Questions and Answers
How far into Mech E did you make it before you switched? If you do end up finding it difficult to get into a Mech masters... you could always go back and take a couple extra basic classes, statics, dynamics, fluids, thermo, and maybe kinematics or strengths, and then reapply. -
I remember having a massive celled sheet up and I was reviewing it with someone and they went to point... And I was like "Don't touch it!" And by their reaction I could tell that I sounded like a total snooty b*tch when I said it and then had to explain that it was touch screen and he would have moved everything... And I didn't think his hands were dirty lol.

With only 3 rows of corn, you could hand pollinate. I used to have an entire garden, zucchini, squash, peppers, tomatoes, watermelon, broccoli... You name it, I had it. Now we only have a balcony and I have had to give up most of my gardening. Now I just have some herbs and my legacy plants (all in pots now).

I hate having the touch screen... Really. Its a laptop, not a tablet.

Just as a suggestion... We road trip with our cats sometimes... And I bought a dog kennel... The wire crate kind with a puppy divider. Just small enough to fit in our backseat. You take the puppy divider and place it horizontally rather than vertically to create a 2 tier cage with room in the front for them to get from one floor to the other. And then we put a disposable litter tray and food bowls on the bottom level, and a blanket for them on the top level. And we put a thin blanket over the top so they couldn't see out the window and didn't have sun shining on them. The amazon basics ones are like $40. We use ours often. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00QAVO29I/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?qid=1460317132&sr=8-3&pi=SX200_QL40&keywords=dog+kennel&dpPl=1&dpID=617rCTjjYAL&ref=plSrch&th=1&psc=1 Also, there are calming sprays you can get to help calming. And I don't know about you, but we have 2 cat harnesses for transporting them outside the crate.

Do people in your masters programs not do research? Because we still have to write a thesis under someone which requires a research fit of some sort. And often grant funding of someone's project for you to work on.

Maybe its just my field... but at no point during my interview was I asked to express my feelings... or opinions on matters that weren't research related (which weren't really opinions). They were only trying to judge my capability to excel in their program and whether my research interests truly aligned with theirs... which is the same thing they are judging when they look at my gpa and gre score and past research etc. So nothing changed. I understand that the applicaiton process allows a university to judge people... but that is the point of an application process, otherwise we wouldn't have the process at all. It really comes down to what they are judging you based on... and unless you can prove that the interview process allows them to judge you based on something irrelevant to their "goal of finding the most competent students" I don't think that there is a case.

We utilized the unlimited printing as much as possible. But still had a backup printer in case something happened, or if we needed something not school related or on a Sunday or something. Still a good thing to have around if you have the space.

That's like saying... not everyone is entitled to an NSF grant... so we should stop funding the NSF and people should fund their own research with their own money.

Federally, you are only legally protected from being discriminated by race, gender, disabilities, and as of recently... sexual orientation. You are not protected from being discriminated against because the department thinks you are stupid or rude. If you can prove that the interview provides a way to discriminate against you race, gender, pregnancy, or disabilities... when all of those things are addressed in the application already, then you will have a case. Also I still absolutely fail to see how this is infringing on 1st amendment rights. They are not legally abridging the freedom of speech in any way.

I personally believe that safe spaces are stupid. And illegal. However, there are many universities who have them, and are using the OCR anti discrimination laws to support them. And until that problem is resolved... we certainly aren't going to convince anyone that those universities really care about free speech to all. But regardless of that, as I said above, I really don't think that student interviews and essays are in any way a free speech issue. They could become a discrimination issue if the student felt they were being discriminated against because of the interviews... but that has nothing to do with legal free speech.

There was a bit of a divide between the undergrad and grad students in my department but most of it was because the undergrads were young "get drunk and go to the bars every weekend" kids, and most of the grad students were married/serious long term relationship/ had kids/pregnant. Some of the older or more life experienced undergrads would befriend the grad students, and some of the younger or less attached grad students would hang with the undergrad group. It was a lot like the divide between college kids and high schoolers. They don't dislike each other, they are just typically in different places of their lives and have fewer things that relate them with which to build meaningful relationships. If you engage in something like intramural sports, you are effectively bridging that "not much in common" gap, and your academic status will no longer be that relevant to those people.

I also fail to see how this is a free speech issue... discriminatory action issue yes, free speech not really. First and foremost... if we were to consider this a free speech issue, the precedent will be set when legal issues are resolved with the campus "safe space" or "safe zone" in which freedom of speech is already abandoned through a publicly funded institution in a battle between 1st amendment rights and the OCR's declaration of institutional responsibility to provide an nondiscriminatory educational environment. If "safe spaces" devoid of free speech are permitted by the public institution, then the idea that free speech is fundamental to every aspect of the university's running is null. As a discriminatory issue, it is already illegal to discriminate based on race, gender, disability, etc. Which conveniently are all things that are included in my application, and nothing that would have been suddenly revealed in an interview. And my SOP would have clearly revealed my lack of compliance with every mainstream religion that I know of... just based on my research interests. So in reality, what is the interview infringing on that the rest of the application process isn't? Why apply at all? No more SOP's. No more essays. No more letters of recommendation. Just test scores, a transcript, and a name. Better yet... just a form number, because your name might reveal your ethnicity or gender.

If the physical paper isn't sentimental, just the memories... you could always either amateur scan the items yourself or take them somewhere to be scanned more professionally. Then you'll have all the memories, but on a card the size of a quarter rather than a box the size of a dog. -
I find that external hard drives are the most reliable, and like you said, the big problem is remembering to use it. I solved that problem by just scheduling it into my actual calendar. My partner used a bunch of different click free and wireless back ups and ended up reverting back to the hard drive.

We have to have multiple monitor screens for work output... and went with just getting a monitor. It's a whole lot cheaper that way. And we really just didn't need the actually desktop drive. Your macbook air can connect to different monitors http://alvinalexander.com/apple/macbook-air-external-monitor-display-dvi-vga-connectors

I took an art class in 9th grade... lol. But really I just started painting random things... mostly stuff I found on pinterest. There are lots of easy painting things on there. And I find that palette knife painting is absolutely the most forgiving for beginner painters, that's why I use it so much lol. Acrylics are your friend. It really is an awesome stress reliever. Here's my idea board https://www.pinterest.com/sjohn19999/art/ @yayspace Thanks.... it only took like an hour or two to make because it's so small. -

I've been working on my birds... really great time waster lol. -
I contemplated applying to work with one of the professors at my undergrad institution, and talked with him about it. After some family deliberation, my partner and I decided to leave that particular city, and I ended up applying elsewhere. He was still more than happy to write me a glowing LOR. Your PI should be more that understanding that there are lots of options, and he may be able to help guide you in the right direction.

You know... those little Japanese cloth fan things (my lack of cultural knowledge is shining through) that fold out. I had one of those and it was pretty awesome. I was always soooo jealous of the women walking around like... "I don't need a bra. Ladee da. I'm so awesome." And I'm over here like dammit its hot, I wish I could run around like its 1975. But alas... I cannot. -

I'm jealous... I grew up hopping between ypsi, the flint area, and dearborn. So... keeping some kind of fan or something is important. The humidity in the air prevents your sweat from evaporating, which is how you cool down. So your body overheats easily. So you have to help with that evaporation with some kind of fan. Lightweight quick dry wicking clothes are great. Also... something like the summer's eve body deodorant spray helps keep you from sweating in places you get heat rash, like in between your boobs. And bra's without padding are better for not getting gross. And using a daily eczema lotion helps prevent heat rash some as well.
