  1. Ahhh I see. Yes for that level of education that salary is low, but there are parts of the US where that can provide a comfortable living. Why isn't there a PhLIS? Seems like you'd do that and get a Master's in another subject you wish to specialize in. Is this the same friend applying to Clinical Psych programs that wanted advice on if/how he should try again? Regardless it is possible to get off the waitlist after 4/15, there have been posts around the boards about it. It is rare though.
  2. Ummm this doesn't sound like a good idea. Maybe you should take a benadryl.
  3. Wait a minute! Are you saying all those hunky research librarians are poor? Here I was all excited to discover the foxiness of men in cardigans with functioning brain cells, but geez I may have to rethink this. All those hours filled with inappropriate thoughts....I can't get that time back! Frank is good. If someone is scared off you may not want to live with them. Living alone is great and I think everyone should do it. If you shop around you can find an option that will work for you.
  4. Omg the clothes! I have 4 closets, 2 of which are walk-in, and each hanger holds six items. Yeah I finally figured out how this happened. For every one item I donate or throw out I buy six more items. Plus twice a year I update my wardrobe to accommodate new trends, weight fluctuations, and my changing tastes. What's really hilarious is as I was going through everything I realize I've worn 98% of everything I have. Instead of shipping it all I've decided to purge 80% of everything, postpone my spring update to summer, and then start from scratch after I move. I seriously just figured out that your field is in library sciences hehehe. Libraries are so amazing A few weeks ago I was in the zone being all adult....paid bills, ran errands, cleaned house, etc. Then I get home and am starving, open the fridge to find it empty. I stood there a few minutes staring and wasting electricity trying to fathom why there was no food...... oh yeah I have to buy that and forgot lol. Sometimes I'm seriously amazed I leave the house with pants on every day. I'm with you! For places like this I just refuse to give them my bank account info. I set up a prepaid debit card and add the exact amount they need on it. This way if there's any hassle I can just close it. Have very awkward conversations with all potential roommates before signing anything. I mean straight up talk about walking around naked, overnight guests, bathroom hygiene if sharing one, loud bedroom activities, shared or not shared food, etc. Otherwise you may come home one day and see something you can't unsee or go broke buying food because everyone keeps eating yours without replacing it.
  5. April 15th being a funding only deadline and not an admissions one could be field specific and if that is the case then those programs would state their expectations regarding applicants response times in the offer letter. They can reserve the right to take away an applicants space and funding if they haven't responded by a certain deadline and then they are likely to chose someone off the waitlist. Barring a life threatening emergency there's no reason an applicant should be missing the deadline to respond anyway.
  6. That's what I used to say when I heard people say what a great idea a pet resort was and now we have those lol.
  7. I've been told by several programs that the funding follows whoever ends up accepting an offer, which makes sense and seems more than fair to me. Although reading around the boards it seems some programs may not have that option.
  8. I am glad I didn't exchange contact information with any of the applicants because of this very reason. It's one thing to not be chosen and know that some other person was, but it's totally different to be in contact with that person. I do think you have the right attitude about wanting to go to a program that truly wants you. In the end that is exactly what helped me make a decision. With this possible job transition be research oriented or something else?
  9. It's actually a mix of paper photos, undeveloped film, photos on cd, yearbooks, and other albums. I pondered scanning everything, but then realized I don't care to look at any of it. A part of me wants to pitch it all in the trash or burn it and another part of me wants to shove it back in the closet where it was. Neither are options and who knows, maybe in 20 years I'll want all of this stuff for some reason. I'm wondering this very same thing. Totally ok to freak out, I am
  10. Wouldn't the public university in question need to be receiving 100% of their funding from federal dollars in order for this to be a possible argument? I'd be shocked if there was such a university given alumni donations, private sector funds, etc.
  11. Am I the only one that finds it really weird that there isn't some sort of pet shipping service? There are pet resorts and pet restaurants so.....just saying.....
  12. Good grief all week I've had a fire under my ass in terms of spring cleaning/purging in preparation of the big move. There's the donate pile, the shred pile, the sell pile, the use before I go pile, and the going with me pile. Well I completely freaked myself out when I opened a box that for the life of me I couldn't remember having or what it might contain. Turns out it is filled with photos, yearbooks, and undeveloped disposable cameras (good lord remember those?!) from at least 10 years ago and earlier. I can't remember exactly what happened, but at some point I stopped being the person that had to capture every memory and moment and started being weirded out by that sort of thing. Now here I am moving clear across the country and having to lug that whole creepy box with me because I can't really dispose of it. What do people do with that sort of stuff? Does everyone just spend their entire lives lugging it around if they don't display it throughout their home?
  13. {{{{{{{{{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}
  14. They also make dry wicking undies! I would just say something like "thank you for letting me know, however I have decided to accept a place at another program."
  15. This looks pretty cool and is affordable. I too prefer to handwrite my notes, but then its a pain to try to review them and I don't have time to type them all up.
  16. I figured I'd poke around amazon or ebay until I found them or something similar. I can't imagine they cost that much, under $50 I'd imagine.
  17. I fail to see the point of spending that much money on a chair that has no arms. I don't have a book stand, but I have a paper stand with magnet holders that is helpful when I'm reading articles. A book stand would be nice, but I'd want something that was comfortable to use while lying in bed or on the couch like this.
  18. @caleugenides Don't beat yourself up too much. You've learned something from all of this and now its time to move forward. Did School 1 give you a contract/offer letter or anything to sign indicating your acceptance? If so then I would sign it and fax it to them, then immediately send an email to all interested parties saying that you have just signed and submitted your offer and look forward to joining the team in the fall. Also briefly apologize for any confusion on your end during the decision making as it has been a stressful process and you're happy to be part of a great team. End email. No rambling. No questions. Shhhh! Then just let them do departmental stuff and wait for them to reach out to you regarding signing up for classes, orientation, moving, etc.
  19. This has been my experience with every degree I've earned so far. I went to class and did whatever I needed to on campus, but as soon as I was done for the day I got as far away from those people as possible. I'm hoping it'll be a little different in my PhD. Not exactly best friends, but not making me want to scratch my eyes out would be nice.
  20. I just went to my local office supply store and sat in a bunch of ergonomic chairs aimed for sitting 8-10 hours and built to hold 250lbs+. Once I had a few that would work I went online to find better deals.
  21. Yeah I agree that your email sounded like you weren't interested in committing to School 1 and had just been holding up a space and funding while waiting for a better offer. Sure you said you're more interested in School 1, but the wording choice didn't sound genuine. I understand wanting to make an informed decision and you can't do that if School 2 hasn't given you a decision and/or funding information. This close to 4/15 I think it would have been better to contact School 2 and push them for a decision because while you're interested in their program you don't want to keep holding other offers if they're interested in you. If they kept telling you they couldn't provide a decision sooner and gave you no hint that you might be their top choice then it was time to cut your losses with them and accept School 1.
  22. Yes! If it weren't for youtube I wouldn't have a clue how to apply it, which brands to use, what looks with my skin tone, what's trendy, what's good for my skin type, etc. I was actually studying videos recently since I'll be relocating to a new climate and figured I should upgrade my makeup and experiment with some different colors and trends. I started out as clueless as you and now I'm way more comfortable. As for hair youtube can be helpful in terms of styling tools, but not always helpful at teaching me new hairstyles. Once I found the right flat iron hair styling became a breeze. I so admire you gals on here doing something wild and new with your hair. I just don't have the nerve. Every time I think about getting a cut or a color I worry about hating it in a week, which is possible because I often hate things lol. Maybe I'll just grow it a little longer, that would be kind of different yet somehow still the same lol. Sports clubs? You mean a gym? I bet your school has one that you can use for free or very cheap since exercise is good for you. There's probably several other fitness joints in town with student rates. I found an aerial yoga studio in my new city and am looking forward to trying that. It's not a cheap workout, but I just went once or twice a month it would be a nice change and more affordable. No, but if I had the aptitude I'd learn the harp. I always wanted to dress up like one of those sexy Greek style sirens and tempt men with my harp strings.
  23. I'm not so sure its the desk that really matters, but the chair. Definitely don't skip on a good quality ergonomic chair. If you could put your feet up and nap in it then it's perfect.
  24. You're not using an spf product for your hair?!?!? Or at the very least wearing a hat?! It may seem silly, but go into a nursing and see what those people who didn't maintain their hair look like. Frightening rats nests with patches of bald!
  25. I agree! I would never trust myself to put chemicals on my own head and still have hair afterwards. Then again I'm kind of boring when it comes to hair and I have added highlights exactly once and it took my stylist 9 years to convince me lol. I am dreading the hunt for a new stylist. My old stylist moved and I've been with a new one for a year now and have finally got her accustomed to what I want. Of course I'm so vain I've already worked into my budget trips home to see her in case it takes longer than expected to find someone.
