  1. 1-2 months is what I recommend as well, definitely not more if you are looking for an entry level job in a social service agency (I do hiring in my current position and I would not hold a case manager position for longer than two months). In terms of getting hired at internships- I was approached by my supervisor and asked but I would recommend expressing interest now to your supervisor. Even if they don't have an opening if they know you are looking they will often point you in the direction of openings in other agencies if they hear of them. Focus on doing really well at your internship, being proactive and going above and beyond.
  2. Depends on your situation, do you absolutely need a job immediately after you graduate? Are you able to live at home while you search so you can be pickier? I wouldn't apply for a social service job any longer than 2 months out, case worker vacancies usually need to be filled quickly and they will want someone who can start soon. It's different in other professions so don't worry about what your friends in other sectors are doing
  3. It is possible but I wouldn't recommend it. I knew someone who worked overnights will in school full time and it was nearly impossible with schedules and internships and her schoolwork suffered. Cost of living in New York is high and if you work a social service job even working full time you will be stretched to pay bills. When I was in grad school I worked part time at a social service agency on the weekends which allowed me to get some experience and I also didn't have to take out as many loans for living expenses. I would consider that route. It's ok to take out a modest amount of money for living expenses.
  4. I'm bumping this thread. I'm considering applying to a Phd program in the next few years. I have my LCSW and MSW and have been working in a managerial position at a homeless service agency for the past two years. Any advice on applications and/or type of work that would make me more marketable to Phd programs? I've published one book review but that's the extent of my publishing experience.
  5. Hi Sarah, I noticed that you attended UIC. I am considering attending this Fall for the MSW and have already recived my acceptance. I am an out of state student and trying to figure out how to cut the cost down a bit. Do you have any knowledge of the financial aid offered at UIC? I don't have any log in information so I can't really search online specifically for me and I have called and they are very vague. Just trying to do some investigating!

Hi there! So sorry that I didn't see this until now. I'm not very familiar with out of state financial aid options, but my impression is that UIC doesn't give out much aid. I would email Edward Potts to see if there are options for you. I didn't get any aid my first year and my second year I got the Deans Award, which wasn't a large sum of money but it was something. I know they also give our a few tuition waivers. I was in state however, so that may have had something to do with it. I worked part-time while I was in school to off-set costs and am doing the ten year loan forgiveness program

  6. Hi everyone- I'm finishing up my MSW now but am considering doing a PHD in the future. Any advice? What sorts of things are schools looking for? I have a good amount of clinical experience but not much research or publication
