  1. Well I got it this year again, so others in my position please don't be discouraged
  2. Hi Garrett, Thanks for weighing in. I asked IIE, and they said that they technically prefer people who have not spent "extensive" (aka 1 year plus) in their host country before, but that does not include study abroad experiences in undergrad. The program I am doing this year is 11 months, and through the State Department not through a U.S. university. However, at the time of the application I will only have been there 3 months. IIE also said that given the large number of grants available in Germany, that I shouldn't panic too much about the preference. I am trying to decide if I should apply to Austria or Germany, since I am really interested in education policy research and have contacts and potential hosts in each. I really hope that doing the program I am with this year won't hurt my chances too much if I go with Germany.
  3. I've heard from multiple people that the selection committee looks favorably upon finalists reapplying. They like the grit and tenacity it shows. Go for it.
  4. Hi Kylin, I was just wondering if you did any research on the clause in the Fulbright eligibility requirements that says they prefer applicants who have not spent "extended time" in their host country. I want to apply for a research grant to Germany or Austria, but will be spending this year in Germany. I was awarded an ETA to Germany this year but turned it down for another fellowship. At the time of application I will only have 2 months there, but obviously the program is a year long, so I am not sure if they factor that in or just look at how much experience a person has in the country at the time the application is due. It sounds like you have spent significant time in Japan already too, but are still applying there. Do you know anything about the "extended time" clause?
  5. I declined the USTA Tuesday and he emailed me back this morning. I was placed in Salzburg and have heard nothing but great things about the program. I hope you get that spot! Fingers crossed for you!
  6. Thanks everyone! I officially declined tonight and I feel at peace with the decision. Admittedly, I am already thinking about a future Fulbright application for next year and wondering how declining/ having extra time in my host country will look... If you want to weigh in again, I am all ears. Thank you again for the advice.
  7. Hi Everyone, I applied for the Fulbright ETA to Germany this year, but declined it for another fellowship (CBYX) that has an age cap of 24. I have aspirations in education policy, so I thought the ETA would be a perfect way to research the education system. After I reflected on it though, I think that a research/ study grant would have been better for me. I am debating between reapplying to Germany for a study/research grant or applying to Austria. I know the Fulbright Commission "prefers" applicants who do not have extensive time in their host country. I will be in Germany for two months at the time of the application, but the commission will also be familiar with the program and know that I will be there a year even if I have not been there a whole year at the time of the application deadline. I also don't know how declining looks or if it is even something they consider given the high number of applicants to Germany. I'd love anyone's advice/ feedback. I'm also happy to give advice as a successful ETA applicant.
  8. If any Germany ETA alternates are lurking, just wanted to let you know that a spot will open up! After much thought and consideration I decided to decline for the other program and will reapply next year. If anyone knows anything about how declining and reapplying looks, that would also be appreciated! GOOD LUCK
  9. Hi Everyone, I will be applying to MPP/ JD joint degree programs for 2016-2017. (T14, Vanderbilt, and the ivies) I am currently a Teach for America corps member, and I am trying to decide between two fellowship opportunities for next year. I am curious about the fellowships impact on admissions decisions and any information you have on how well they prepare candidates for success in graduate school. The options I am looking at include the CBYX (Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals) and the Fulbright ETA in Germany. With the CBYX program I would have a semester of public policy classes and an internship with a leading researcher on educational initiatives to combat racism and right-wing extremism at the Center for Applied politics. (A think tank affiliated with the University of Munich) I am interested in the intersection of education, law and policy, and each of these programs would provide me with hands-on experience with both sectors, in addition to exposure to how the two work together. Also, I can't defer either program, and I have hit the age cap for CBYX after this year. I know the Fulbright name carries a lot of weight, but that the English Teaching Assistantship is not exactly viewed like a research grant. I could also reapply for ether the research/ETA or a combination (available in Austria) later. I'd love to hear your thoughts! Thanks in advance!

  11. Hi Everyone, I was wondering if anyone has declined an ETA and then reapplied for research in the same country the following year. I am very interested in education policy, so when I was applying this year the ETA seemed right up my alley. However, over the past few months I have come up with a research project idea, and I have several contacts from studying abroad in this country. I think I could put together a cohesive, compelling project. I was wondering if declining the ETA would negatively influence my chances next year. Also, I was accepted to do another program within this same country (Germany), and I will be spending the year there if I decline the ETA. I know "extended time" in a host country can be detrimental to an application. I am trying to figure out how detrimental it would be though. When I emailed IIE about it, they said that it could potentially hurt my application but then also said not to worry too much because there are so many grants available in Germany. I also was thinking about the language requirements, and I know that spending the year there this upcoming year will really strengthen my German. The German Fulbright Commission strongly suggests Germany proficiency, so I also feel that many of the people applying probably have spent at least some time there just to get to that level of German, and that my extra time may not stick out from other applications. I also feel that the contacts I make will hopefully be more of a value add to my application than the extra time there would take away from my application. Finally, I know that at the point when the application is due, I will only have had 2 months there, not the whole year yet. Anyways, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this! Thanks!
  12. Yes! Salzburg!!!! Still deciding whether to accept it, the Germany ETA, or another offer. CONGRATS! Where are you placed?
  13. Hi Nicole! Congrats! I requested Berlin, NRW, and Saxony. I am hoping for Berlin or Cologne, because I want to work in a high minority school. Liebe Grüße
  14. Beyond excited to be a Germany ETA recipient!!!! I have to make a really difficult decision though between the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals program and the Fulbright. Anyone with advice... HELP ME. Does anyone know when we have to let Fulbright know about our decision (or is it assumed we accept the grant until otherwise stated?) Also, does anyone know if it reflects poorly to accept another offer like CBYX and then reapply for the Fulbright later on? I have always dreamed of being a Fulbright scholar, but I think the CBYX is an incredible opportunity too, and I am going to be too old to reapply next year and not too old for the Fulbright. Congrats to everyone accepted and best of luck to everyone still waiting!
