I applied to the U of Oregon, too~ Could be wrong (and I hope I am), but I don't think we'll be hearing anything until next week or so. -

I've been thinking on it. Probably going to focus on trying to get a paper to a point where it's publishable and figure out how to function as an independent scholar w/o university affiliation. I luckily still get access to JSTOR, MUSE, and some other online databases with my undergrad log in, but I'm not quite sure how else to get my hands on materials w/o shelling out lots of money. Will probably stay at my current job for the time being, work on some creative projects, keep working with cats...but I don't know if I'll apply again. -

*shrugs* Beats me. And the 'after 35' is more of a personal thing. My mom and her father both died fairly young (both in their early-mid 50s), so I kinda have a fear about having kids later in life then kicking the bucket while they're still young. -

Folks are already telling me to have my eggs tested....(just to add some fertility stress to Ph.D. stress) *hugs for Crugs* Please don't give up hope just yet! (I've got 2 left with no acceptances, so I understand.) -

@kurayamino - I second @Yanaka's question. If all goes well, I'll be starting a program at 30 and have been discussing kids/starting a family with the fiancé while I'm in a program. He's a little weary, but I don't want to plan to wait until I'm 35+ to start having kids. (Not to knock anyone that does, of course.) And Congrats!! -

Bouncing of this, I also did an unfunded MA while working part time (at a fun, little events company). It can totally work if you're realistic about the cost, your expectations, and your game plan -

Congrats to all the folks in at Cornell! I did my undergrad work there and love, love, loved it. (It was fun being an English major surrounded by engineers and future doctors.) My information may be a little out of date as far as faculty are concerned, but be sure to invest in long johns and wool socks if you plan to brave the Ithaca winters! Oh, and beware of salt stains on your jeans. I have vivid memories of salt stains up my calves. -
Waitlist Movement
biyutefulphlower replied to Scarlet A+'s topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm wait-listed at OSU. Really, really hope there's some movement! From what they've said, there's not a numbered order to the wait list, but instead they base their pick on who declined and how the wait-lister will round out their cohort. I'm a comic studies person, so I'm hoping someone media-studies related decides to attend elsewhere. *crosses fingers* -

@phoebusrising I am so, so sorry this happened to you! That's just stress you don't need...Here's hoping that you hear back from another program with good news soon. -

@Zeromus1337 - Thanks for the heads up! Have fun visiting and congrats on the wait list! Well, if I'm ultimately rejected, I'm really glad I got to use a fee waiver. CUNY was the most expensive application. -

I think the thread was acting up yesterday because I kept getting posting errors, but holy moley, it looks like CUNY Grad center sent out a whole slew of e-mails yesterday across disciplines! (My heart, my poor heart.) Can anyone confirm if the online portal updates for acceptances/wait lists? Mine still looks the same (and I'm trying my hardest to keep my spirits up.) -

You and me both! The Chicago rejection came through, though I already knew weeks ago that was coming...I'm trying to patiently wait for CUNY and U of Oregon, but argh!! This wait is killing me! -

Me three. Though, admittedly, after I didn't get an interview, I wasn't holding out any hope. -
What was your writing sample?
biyutefulphlower replied to Straparlare's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
So many interesting papers~ My WS was a portion of my Master's thesis, which focused on the French graphic novel Sky Doll. I used Feminist Sci-Fi critique to analyze at how the creators challenged definitions of what it means to be human and/or a woman through their cyborg heroine (who was built to be a replacement goldfish sex-doll). @KikiDelivery - Your paper sounds fascinating! I read Parable of the Sower a few years back and absolutely loved it, though I haven't gotten around to Parable of the Talents yet. Octavia Butler is just the best~ -
Got another one to add: -Start a new position within the same ole' company, but still check Grad Cafe too much during the day. I've been offered a new role at my job, and though I know I may only be in it for about 6 months, I'm going to go for it. The pay's a bit better and I'll get to use my writing chops more, which are pluses. (Though I worry about bad blood with my current boss...)

I dance with my cat all the time. Since I pick her up, it has to be reciprocal....right? Funny enough, she gets really worried when people play 'Just Dance' and will grab legs in hopes that folks stop moving so much.

I love that I got 'Drink', and a few clicks after 'Plan a wedding', I got 'Did I already say Drink?'. Point taken, web generator.

Many Many Congrats @piers_plowman & @Sunsy!! What a way to start the weekend! -
Hmmm, I've been putting on my show-smile (even on the phone), saying thank you or something of the like, and then grumbling/whimpering to my close family and friends that have more of an understanding. Some folks aren't going to get it, though that doesn't mean they care about you any less. It's kind of like when I was talking with a dear family friend about my concerns with having a child while in a program, timing, etc. and how I have to rethink a lot of things if I don't get in this year. While very kind, her response showed that we weren't on the same page about what all this program stuff can potentially mean (and what it means to me).
