Holy crap I actually got it... I had pretty much given up hope after getting rejected from the first round of NDSEG. I don't even know how to process this.

Edit: Wow, one reviewer gave me a fair but I still won somehow. Overall scores were VG/F, E/E, E/VG

Eh, I think it is just something to identify and work on.
I think that graduate school is a great time to identify traits/habits that interrupt productivity, and actively work to fix them. Everyone here is somewhere between undergrad and their second year; there is still plenty of time to work on how you handle stress, anticipation, uncertainty, etc. I think it's a bit soon to throw the baby out and conclude that research/science/academia isn't the field for any specific person here.
And this is coming from someone whose productivity has not been impeded whatsoever by the NSF GRFP. But I can understand that some people are simply more anxious, and some people might have more riding on this than I do.
(And somehow I completely screwed up the quotations in this comment!)

I went to the liquor store and got a 6 pack of Peroni to help me pass the time and sleep tonight. Good luck everyone and do post here if you get it. I don’t expect to being an undergraduate but I look forward to the feedback.

Let me just say, I literally made my account just now to reply to this and tell you how absolutely fucked it is that your advisor does that to you. Academics can spend so much time getting caught up in titles and prestige because thats how they see the world, but it is completely unfair to push that off onto a 1st or 2nd year graduate student. Focus on your research above all else and do good work, and good things will happen.

I hate seeing Academia consume people like this. It isn't fair to you at all. Whether you get the NSF or HM or nothing, you're still a god damn PhD student/candidate, which make up less than 1% of the entire American population. You've worked hard for this, you will keep working hard, and titles and awards don't make or break you.

Reviewer #2 will probably break you though, but they break everyone.
Edit: Sorry if my use of language offends anybody, I just don't take kindly to academia being academia. I'm still waiting to hear back on my NSF and it's my second time applying!

Edit: Edit: Also, my advisor just got back from an NSF panel/workshop today and it sounds like everything was super up in the air until the new budget was approved. So I'd imagine in the next week or two we will hear something.

Some of the stuff in this thread is ridiculous for so many reasons. So much nearly blind guessing (with so many factors involved), hype and emotions. Going through the past several pages of this thread you would think we would have had the results 10 times over. It's like some care more about the money attached to this grant than they do the research. I seriously hope none of this carries over into your research careers and scientific method. I know you have all wasted my time sucking me into thinking it will be announced early. This reminds me of people who stress so much over their grades and they miss out on life, learning and independent thinking.

I dreamt last night that the results were released this morning, and everyone was in here saying whether they were awarded or not. But in my dream, I was too afraid to open the email.
In reality, I’m so tired of waiting that I’m going to open that email immediately. I don’t even care what the outcome is so much anymore, I just want to know!

Same here.  I don't have to worry about funding and have other fellowships.  The reason i'm so desperate for even HM is because every single person in my lab who was eligible for the GRFP got Honorable Mention, including my advisor.  That means if I get nothing, i'm going to break the HM record and it's going to make me look horrible and objectively less intelligent than my labmates.  I'm also a Hispanic woman so if it really is easier for minorities to get it, it's going to look even worse if I get nothing.

I’ll be another to add that funding “desperation” has nothing to do with why I applied for the NSF GRFP. I already have a pretty nice funding situation because the PIs in the lab I’m in are great at getting grants. I want it for the accomplishment and honor; it is a great honor, after all. And, of course, getting one fellowship tends to lead to success with future fellowships. Finally, if I get my own funding, then obviously it is icing on the cake for my advisors because the money that’s been set aside for me can go towards funding a future incoming student.

On topic: I am predicting Friday this week. Five of the last six years have been announced between the 29th and the 1st, and while the outlier early announcement last year corresponds to the same solicitation as this year, I think we're safely out of the "early" period and can expect to go back to the pattern of the previous 5 years. Hopefully there is a maintenance announcement in the next few hours to prove me wrong!
