  1. You're right, I just hate seeing someone picked on for no reason. HJin didn't deserve the attitude Jade put out there, so I said something. Not a big deal, no sweat off my back...if Jade chooses to be a jerk, then it's fine but I when I see unfairness, I call it out. And if we ran into each other in person, I would still say the same to Jade to her face. Everyone is stressed! For sure! But that doesn't give anyone the RIGHT to be a jerk to someone who didn't deserve it.
  2. To be fair, you really came at Hjin wrong. EVERYONE waitlisted has made similar posts to HJin's in various threads and the results board. Your "LoL cute" comment was very snarky and uncalled for. There are some ppl who make decisions and never tell the other schools they aren't going so the waitlisted ppl are left in limbo. Saying please reject ASAP is totally okay, because HJin was succinct in saying if you got accepted and don't plan on going, can you say something now. There is no malice and attitude in that...but your comment to HJin was rude.
  3. yes handwrite with a pen. its nice being able to write the notes and then have them transcribed by the app later
  4. I have one, its' pretty dope. WIsh I had this in grad school to take notes! This along with the livescribe pen makes taking notes very easy.
  5. i see a couple of acceptances and interview requests for Columbia Public Health Sociomedial science PHD. Its my hope that everyone puts what sub-division they were interested in (history, anthro, sociology) in their postings so that I can breathe easier...lmao. I don't think they got around to the one I applied to yet. This is so nerve wrecking!!!
  6. Check this thread: http://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/31393-mph-low-gre-low-gpa-accepted-i-did-it-so-can-you-the-tale-of-the-underdog-applicant/
  7. I think you still have a chance. Your GRE scores are very good, your GPA is not that low (there is a sub-3.0 thread in here where quite a few ppl with lower than a 3.0 got into schools). The SOPHAS breaks down your GPA on your application so the schools you apply to will see that your Major GPA was a 4.0, your social science GPA is whatever, etc etc. So, with the breakdowns does make things better. Also I got into an MS program with a 2.9 (my last two years were 3.8 and better, my second year was a mess). However, I was required to obtain a certain GPA my first year (it was a conditional admittance and I was told I couldn't get a C and my GPA had to be a 3.5, which is higher than what's usually required of a Master's student). So It's very possible. If you can get more experience in the health field, that would be great but as you currently stand, you do have a shot. Some schools have rolling admissions so you can still apply this year. Look for the Sub-3.0 thread. that can give you some tips. Good luck.
  8. Thanks for letting us know! Good luck on your interviews!! I selected the Socio-behavioral Track. So I'm wondering if there are differences in the tracks.
  9. Someone put up they had got an invite for an interview at NYU for their public health PhD. That makes me nervous. I applied there too for a PhD. I wonder what department they selected. This is so nerve wrecking.
  10. Have you looked at getting a studio apartment instead? that should be cheaper. I would recommend roommates but since it's two of you, it wouldn't make much sense. However, if you think coming up with approximately $1000 a month will be hard between the two of you (that's for a place, utilities, internet, and food), then you two need to start working as much as you can now and start saving up as much money as you can. the FASFA is open now, so both of you should go ahead and submit for that. I was in a similar situation when I was getting my Master's degree, and I ended up maxing on my government loans to pay my bills. That might be your only option. However, I suggest that you only get federal loans, no private loans. People do this all the time, but keep in mind what you borrow you have to pay back so take that into account that taking all these loans for schooling and bills will cut into your income greatly once you start working. Also bartending is better than taking a minimum wage job. I use to pick up bartending jobs all the time to pay for things, on a good night I could make $300 plus dollars which was enough to pay quite a few bills and get food.
  11. I'm late with my reply but I think you should go for Tulane. It seems like you looked into the program and you have found things you really like and appreciate about the program. Just be sure to be specific in your SOP about what you are interested in and what you want to do (don't say you don't want to do global health just stress what you enjoy and point out how that program could help you). I don't know how strong the program is but if you plan to go further than a Master's this is a great way for you to enter a program and improve your GPA so that if you decide to get a doctorate, you will be a stronger candidate. Good luck.
  12. quick question...what is it about Tulane that entices you? What do you want to apply there? I can respond better if I know what you're looking for.
  13. What are you worried about? number wise you look good. are you hiding something from us OP? lol.
  14. You have to just let it go. Obsessing over getting in or getting 12 rejections will drive you crazy. I think we all wonder "omg suppose i paid all of this money for no acceptances" and it makes my stomach hurt too but I choose to think positive. I remind myself that I worked hard and I'm a good fit for that program. Or focus on other things that make you happy. the holidays are coming up and that's a great time to relax (for me). Also I meditate and do yoga. But you can't let the possibility (or even the reality) of being rejected kill your sense of self worth or value. Everyone is important, and if you don't get in then you take the time to refocus or reorganize and either try again or find another path to completing your goals. A lot of these rejections aren't even about US per se but sometimes other ppl are better fits or the school doesn't have enough funding. But you have to find other things to focus on during this time or it's going to be a long depressing road for you up until March/April.
  15. it only takes that long if you if you are reporting the same day you do the exam. I got an email from one school that my GRE scores were missing (there were 4 options for this school's public health department and I chose the wrong one I guess). Anyway the same day I paid for the scores to be sent to the school, less than a week later they told me they received everything (including the scores).
  16. I'm a project manager now and I have a Master's. For my job you had to have an Master's plus 2-3 years experience. While I do think it's possible to climb up the ladder in research, I think (in regards to public health) it's harder to command more money and/or get certain opportunities and grants. A lot of the jobs I see that I would love to transition to require a PhD. As I get older, I want more so I am applying for a PhD now. It really depends on your goals.
  17. My first few jobs were at hospitals or universities as a research coordinator. It's the day to day work in research: recruiting patients, paying patients, interviews, study procedures, IRB stuff, regulatory paper work. Depending on where you live it can pay anywhere from $35 to $80K (80 is more like a project manager who does research).
  18. I had this same problem. You have to answer all of the questions for it to save. Even if you want to answer one now and answer another later, all of the required ones have to be filled out in order for you to save the form. HTH.
  19. I waited until my second LOR was uploaded then I submitted my application and paid. I figured if the ppl were late I didn't want to pay and they not accept the application. I submitted mine almost two weeks ago and they are still verifying them. I also paid for the transcription service which takes around two to three weeks also. That might be my hold up. However, the day after I submitted my first app, I received an email from one of the schools stating that my GRE scores and one LOR was missing. You could go for it if you are confident that LORs will come through if you want to get it out the way.
  20. I had this issue. Come to find out the emails were going to their spam/junk folders. Two of my recommenders had that issue.
