With all due respect, the result you linked to didn't exist when I posted. Seeing as this is your only post, and in years prior multiple people have posted, it's probably spam. ? And If MIT did notify, it wasn't before I posted so I'm afraid it is still not a valid disagreement, as you intended it. Grad programs almost never notify on Fridays, Saturdays, for obvious reasons. If MIT has notified, we would likely have more than one result to go on. Also, MIT has historically not posted so early, so I can't help but assume your post is spam.

Hey Mof, That’s weird, see rejections but no interview invites, but schools almost never send out no’s before Yes’s. So I’m assuming the on-campus interview invites went out. I could have sworn I saw some posted as well. But Emory invites their short list to campus as part of the selection process, and chooses the finalists based on that weekend, so for logistics purposes they send out those invites quite early.

Hahaha no there’s no way! You know the second someone gets an interview at Harvard they’re gonna let EVERYBODY know.

Hey Nervous, Just revisit your statement of purpose and make sure you can talk about what’s in it verbally. It seems the adcomm is composed of people that are independent of the PoI you wrote to work with, and so the email likely came from DGS. Additionally, it’s only a 15 minute interview, and they’re requesting it because they already like what they read, so if you give them a little more of that I’m sure it will be fine. Ive heard they like to poke holes in people’s work, and can be intimidating, but that wasn’t my experience with them. They even smiled at some point. Good luck!

Hi Anzi, Honestly there’s no way to know. There seems to be a rolling process with them, as they sent out some invites last Friday and were conducting interviews even as new notifications for new interviews were going our. This is one case in which I’d say not to take no news as bad news.

Hmm... I don’t know if I trust anything further back than 2016, just because departments/ adcomms/ admissions change so much over the years. And it was definitely worth applying. As one of my professors says (about grants): you can’t win if you don’t play.

Hey Alligator, I was trying to parse this out myself. I’ve been through the results page way more times than is proobably healthy, and it doesn’t seem like NYU clearly interviews for sociocultural or linguistic, but that they interview for biological seems pretty consistent. Fingers crossed? I’ve got my hopes on that one too.

Hey Kuroneko, i has a similar experience with MAPSS. They asked me to come because it would get me into PhD programs afterward, but quickly changed their tune when I accepted admission to one of the PhD programs they had advertised. Scaring me into thinking I wouldn’t get support or that it wasn’t good enough. Noticing your username, are you applying from Japan btw? There are some really brilliant anthropologists of Japan in the US. Good luck with applications!

Good luck on your apps! I’m not sure about NYU since the posted results don’t make it super clear, but CUNY definitely interviews, likely to decide who gets which fellowship.

I see an interview went out at Berkeley! Congrats to the recipient! Wonder who the PI is. Could this be? Another rejection？? I’ve heard Berkeley’s process is a bit less streamlined than the others, so fingers crossed.

Hey Mofanthroo, It's often a pretty safe bet. The waitlists are typically chosen from the interviewees as well. I've got the same feeling about Duke haha, all we can do is look forward and hope all our other schools support us.

Hey Woop, I would guess individually! It's only 8:30 am in Durham right now, which means it was about 7:30 am when you saw it, and who knows how much earlier than that it was posted. It's just a feeling but, if it was standardized, I would guess it would go out during some type of 9-5 range. But who knows?! All we can do is sit here and hit F5.

Is it just me, or does it also mean the awardees currently on tenure also won't receive payment?

Hey Sheldina, what do you mean by got into a program you never even applied to? That’s really interesting and could help a lot of students. Do you mind expanding?

This is one of the best pieces of advice across all platforms. The bolding and the underlining is a strategy I think I'm going to use in future grants as well. Knowing the reviewers have so little time, your project needs to be defined quickly, and points made clearly. As one of my advisors described it, "The Reader should be able to read just the first sentence of each paragraph from start to end and know what your project is, how you plan to do it, and why they should give you money to do it." Above all, the process is still a crapshoot because one person's E/E and another's G/VG aren't objectively comparable.

Looking at my packet, after all the horror stories, win or lose, I’m grateful I had three good reviewers. Was legit so freaked out.

This though. I had a friend apply three times and then ended up at Berkeley. There’s so many factors at play that if you don’t get in the first time don’t hesitate to reapply. There are so many ways it isn’t personal.

You should definitely check. If you get it you’ll be so confident you’ll do awesome on the test. If you don’t you’ll be like I better have my shit together and stay motivated. Not checking would kill my concentration.

How does the funding situation look? Honestly, the junior faculty at UCSD are fantastic, so by the time you finish your PhD, they are going to be really well known in the field. If it’s a sociocultural person I can guess who it is and both of them are awesome in terms of productivity, mentor ship, and pragmatism. You really can’t go wrong.
