And thanks for the update, by the way! Who knows how long they'd keep us in limbo...

Thanks, Zahar! ReallyNiceGuy, I also applied to Indiana. And I applied to summer programs (with FLAS) at IU's SWSEEL, Pitt's program, and ASU's CLI. Good luck everyone! Funding time is getting closer...

Sigh. One more implicit rejection from a PhD program. Good luck to you all in other endeavors.

Where my Duke applicants at?!
Enzian replied to cquin's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
That's a shame. While the faculty were definitely hard to read in-person (during the interviews, I mean, not during the dinners and things), they were also friendly and most of us there this weekend really felt our interviews were productive. But it was a long weekend for them and doing seven Skype interviews on top of the day's work is probably taxing so I guess it's not surprising they're a bit more reserved (plus the fact that they're all together for your interviews, while in person they were divided into two teams). Still, I'm bummed you all didn't have the same experience I did. Relative to other mind-fuckingly nerve-wracking experiences it was ultimately kind of pleasant, is what I mean. :-( Good luck to those still to interview! -

I'm still laughing about this -- I had a prof that did the same thing. It was disorienting at first because it seemed like he was answering questions I wasn't (or at least I thought I wasn't) asking. Congrats to MichaelK! -
OH! I just thought of "The Book of Embraces" by Eduardo Galeano. Fun, beautiful, inviting and reader-friendly. I realize how stupid and pretentious this sounds but it's probably the most "human" book I've ever read.

I'm surprised nobody has offered up a Franzen novel yet. I'll put in another Garcia Marquez novel: Autumn of the Patriarch. The whole thing is like 6 sentences which, formally, seems kind of fun and interesting but makes it very difficult to pause to do, you know, anything else. Which, coincidentally, is exactly what I wanted to do while reading it.

Bummer. I wonder what the odds are that none of the 4 were gradcafe members? Evidently pretty good. -

A single Penn Comp Lit rejection went up today. Notification by e-mail. Cryptic. -

I think that brings the other interviewees' chances up from 40% to something like 43% (though I don't know how to use math and that's probably wrong). Three cheers for vordhosbntwin! I'm off to the 43% Confidence of Acceptance thread. -

Just got an acceptance letter to the Slavic and East Euro MA at Ohio State! ...did anyone else on here apply to this program?
-
Just denied by Berkeley Rhetoric via email directing to website. Good luck to those still in the running!

I'm kind of with you. I wouldn't say I abhorred it. There were parts I enjoyed. And there were many parts I thought were "okay." Several of my friends raved about it and I, like parents, just don't understand. But I read it all, so that says something...maybe about my own fear of not finishing what I've started (thanks, Jumanji). To the OP, I recommend the not-too-old-but-not-too-new-classic "Catch-22," unless you had to read it for school and have already formed an opinion in which case I recommend "The Master & Margarita" which is far more Russian and equally funny. Also, there's a big cat with a pince-nez named "Behemoth" that talks and is evil. How is that not awesome?!

I did this too. I hope they're all ashes by now but I suppose it's possible that somebody somewhere is listening to a second-hand, ripped-from-the-radio cassette full of gems like Local H, Our Lady Peace, the Butthole Surfers, and "Possum Kingdom." -

Whoa, are you me? Am I you? My first concert was Weezer opening for No Doubt in '97. I was thirteen... Some of my favorite life moments have been impromptu singalongs to that 3eb album. I don't know what to make of that. My first album, though, was "Jagged Little Pill."
