  1. Ugh, they're being so inconsiderate to future students.
  2. Cornell's history results are going out and I'm bouncing off the walls with anxiety!
  3. That's so nice of you, thank you! Hopefully we'll all get Cornell acceptances over the next day or two! ? Hoping it's just a matter of POI's sending emails out at their own rate and mine being busy atm!
  4. I see an acceptance for Cornell was posted yesterday (20th). Bets on whether it's legitimate, a troll, or an art history PhD who typoed?
  5. I know this is probably way too specific a story to share but I’m dying to hear it! ?
  6. I want to add to in defense of Sigaba that while he can be a bit pompous and rough around the edges at times, he’s certainly not a troll and his advice is good more often than not. I won’t derail this further but also want to wish T Qi the best in a search for a program for themselves and their partner!
  7. I know that in some disciplines, “academic incest” (or doing undergrad/PhD at the same place) is viewed pretty negatively because it doesn’t show that you can necessarily thrive in two different environments, plus the fact that going elsewhere and learning from different scholars for another degree teaches you new perspectives. I’ve thought about this myself and the main issue between US/EU doctoral programs that I’ve found is the fact that most US programs (this is likely field-dependent as well) have doctoral students teaching undergrads and TA’ing while many European programs (at least in history) are pure research degrees that don’t give you that teaching experience unless you seek it out. Best of luck as you make your decision! I’d opt for Europe myself, but that’s just me.
  8. It is, but it’s also cluttering up the results page with more non-results, which won’t really help future applicants nor stop people from using the function as a venue for yelling at each other anyway.
  9. Thanks! ❤️ @Balleu and I will fight for the spot! /goes off to watch "Ip Man" and totally become a badass martial artist as a result
  10. It's funny because it's true! Also /highfive for your previous post!
  11. I'm beginning to think that I should've added a /joke tag or something to that result! Nothing but love for Wisconsin and I'm truly happy for those who got in ahead of me. ?
  12. I appreciate that! ? Holding out hope for Cornell; I felt that it was my strongest of my applications this year and best fit (also my dream program!) so hopefully in a couple of weeks I'll be busting out the champagne! Congrats on your acceptances, happy for you that you have a couple in the bag already!!
  13. Ha that was me, just an attempt at humor there as I got gunned down again in this application season-no professional program would actually send an email like that. ? The email itself, though generic, was really nice!
  14. Whelp, got the official "LOL NO" from Wisconsin, so it's down to Cornell as my last shot at a PhD program this year. Cornell is my strongest match and was my strongest application of the group, so we'll see how it plays out. I feel like it was much improved from last year as well. /crosses fingers
  15. "Greetings from Michigan, and FU!" As a lifelong Ohio State football fan whose parents both got their doctoral degrees at OSU, that checks out for Michigan!
  16. Man, that'd be an awesome program. I love France and it'd be sweet to be able to go and do another MA there. That cost, though, wow. Thanks for sharing your experiences, though! What was the coursework like?
  17. You did a Columbia MA in Paris? How expensive was it before the fellowship? I didn't even look at Columbia's sticker price for an MA because I figured it was prolly $50k/year plus living expenses.
  18. Ivy league trolls, all of them.
  19. Anyone else get an offer from Columbia to transfer your application to an MA program? (I'm assuming everyone did and it's a cash cow for the school) I was like "I already have an MA in history, Broseph." I mean don't get me wrong, if I had Oprah money I'd do another MA at an Ivy just for the hell of it!
  20. If you have access to a hot tub/jacuzzi (living with my parents while I work and apply to grad schools and they hooked themselves up a few years ago) get in on that. A few nights here lately in Western NY after rough days at work and stress over applications I've gotten in and soaked for an hour or so while stargazing if the sky is clear or watching the snowfall if it's not, and it relaxes me like crazy. I think another thing that's helped keep me sane is not thinking right now about a future where I don't get into grad school if I strike out again this year. I have a couple of potential plan Bs that I'll decide between in early March if I don't get any acceptances, but right now I just focus on work, exercise, and occasionally spending time with friends as our schedules allow to avoid focusing too hard on the future. Neither of my plans involve doing anything immediately and tbh I couldn't start working on writing sample/SOP/etc. for the next round if I wanted too; it's just too soon. Whether or not I'm accepted I have an online adjuncting gig for one course lined up in the fall, so I'm looking forward to teaching that again and reading up to prep for the course this summer. I'm enjoying reading everyone else's tips!
