Yeah, I think Cornell's acceptances usually go out around the 24th and I got my rejection (IIRC) March 7th last year. Hopefully we'll all be hearing from the school closer to the 24th this year though.
-
Yep good luck! Gonna be judgement week out of Madison for sure, hopefully it's not a Valentine's Day massacre like (Harvard?) did a few years back. ?

Ha, that was me. You gotta laugh the rejections off, right? Gotta say though, if Cornell shoots me down too I'll be all out of jokes. -
Hopefully we'll both end up there in the fall!
-
Same! Think we're going to be out of luck for another 2-3 weeks though.

It's ok, I'm holding out for my bae (Cornell) anyway!

So happy for you! To those applying to Columbia, just got an email to check the portal, then a generic "sorry, we had a big class and you were a good applicant but blah blah blah" email from the dean. Some people reported getting personalized rejection emails from POIs but that may have just been for the ones who just missed the cut, I'm guessing. Gratz to all those who have gotten acceptances to this point!
-
=( Sorry, that sucks.

Yep, got a call today from a number that was allegedly Madison, Wisconsin (I'm skeptical since the guy had a really heavy accent and I could hear similar accents in the background in whatever phone bank he was calling from but whatever) and ended up being a telemarketer. I'm not normally rude to them but today I was; not my proudest moment but I was really disappointed. =(

I agree, but in my experience some schools don't even care enough to set up code to plug in applicants' names on rejection emails, so I doubt they'll put in the effort, sadly.

Ah thanks! EDIT: figured I'd weigh in with my own feelings on how widely to apply and fit and all that. I definitely feel like I didn't cast my net far enough this year due to time constraints, finances, etc. (Having to cut my writing sample which was based off my 60+ page MA thesis down to sub-50 for a number of programs and then polishing it up while getting together my other application materials, trying to read POIs' work and contact them, working full time, and everything else that just happens in life was hard enough, but some programs (looking at you, Columbia) set the max at 20 and I'll be honest, my writing sample for Columbia did not end up being indicative of my work at all, imo. The fit was good enough at Columbia that I figured I'd roll the dice (did the same thing at MSU with a better sample but great fit with only one prof and struck out there), but I really struggled to figure out how good the fit had to be before I applied to schools. I looked for academic fit above all, and it just worked out that none of the schools that seemed to be good matches were in places I'd absolutely hate living so that was cool. Also, I figured out that I could live affordably in all the places to which I applied. That said, I'd agree with @Sigaba that you never know what you'll be offered until you apply to schools, although many of us are certainly limited at how many $65-$100+ application fees we can afford to roll the dice on. One program I'll be applying to next year if I strike out this application cycle is the Graduate Institute Geneva, which from what I understand doesn't offer a ton of aid but some people get hooked up if they're attractive candidates. Might get money, might not, but worth rolling the dice to find out.

Did someone say when they were meeting this year specifically? Went back a couple of pages and didn't see it.

I have 2 laptops, each about 5 years old. I mainly use a Macbook Air for travel and archival work along with a scanner and a mouse. The downside is the lack of USB ports (only has two) but I bought a cheap USB hub on Amazon that's served me well since I hate working without a mouse and also need the scanner when in archives and (if the internet is spotty) I need to be able to tether at the same time as well. The Macbook is awesome, and although part of its longevity might be due to the fact that I use it sparingly, it's been a tank for me and I love how quickly it boots up. My other laptop is an HP Envy that I bought more for gaming than anything else but these days functions as my workhorse. I hooked it up to a 24" monitor, keyboard, and mouse and it basically functions as a desktop that I can unplug and take without any of the peripherals if I need to. It's a bit on the heavy side, though, especially compared to my Mac. If I had to buy a new computer tomorrow, I'd probably get another Macbook. Windows just has too much bloatware these days and I'm no longer tech savvy enough to mess with all the settings I need to and figure out all the programs I'd need to stop from running on startup. I definitely echo @hardatwork's comment about getting an SSD and at least 8 gigs of RAM. All of that said, I'm much more familiar and comfortable with Windows than I am with Mac OS, even after 5 years of using my Macbook. Still the fact that the Mac lets me use Office and also edit pdf files (mostly just basic chop out a page here or there which basic-level windows adobe does not allow) makes it indispensable for me. Good luck in your computer searches!

I've actually resigned myself to a failed application cycle, which you'd think would make it easier to kick back and relax but it really doesn't. I'm worried that there's just not a whole lot left I can do to position myself as a better candidate next fall and I have a lot on my plate right now with work, finances, and time management so even if I saw a clear pathway to a stronger application it'd be hard to do much about it right now.- 274 replies

Well I applied for an MA in a different (but related) discipline but I'm only going to go if they end up offering me at least a GAship and probably a full ride (Getting at least a GAship is pretty common for most qualified candidates in the program), so that probably won't pan out. It'd be cool because I could finish in a year after transferring some graduate credits in and it'd make me a more qualified candidate for the next application cycle, but it'd also set me back on trying to pay down some debt and study for the LSAT, which is my other backup plan. If I don't end up going to grad school this coming year my plan is to save money, strengthen my doctoral applications as much as possible, apply to those programs as well as some law schools and possibly the Peace Corps, and hike the entire Appalachian Trail from February-end of July or so. It's been my dream for over a decade and it'd be a good opportunity to do it before I move on (hopefully) to a grad program or law school. This coming fall will definitely be my final application cycle (my third) for doctoral programs one way or the other, but I'll probably give law school another shot if I don't get a good offer during this cycle. If I strike out with all of that...who knows? Hopefully that's a scenario I won't have to deal with.

What is terrible? Everything is terrible! @Cornell:

Does the old one (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10XIYhIw4fCbUend2WkA3iujfftu9TrXwR-YKcgr3JKo/edit#gid=693576939) not work for other people right now? I can see it fine. I have an older backed up copy as well.

Checking the result section of this site should give you an idea of when your schools have sent out results, historically. Sorry I don't have any specifics but we're not applying to the same schools so I'm not really sure when your schools notify applicants.

Well, it's always good to be optimistic! ?

Hoping for an admit for you! When have USF and UK's decisions come out, historically? Much appreciated! I'll have a couple of drinks and feel sorry for myself if I go 0/4, but I think that my Cornell application was particularly strong so that's keeping my spirits up for now. ? Congrats on your Duke acceptance and good luck with the rest of your application cycle as well! Must feel great to have at least one very good acceptance already!
