  1. It’s been a couple years, obviously, but if I remember correctly it was kind of a “how to do history class.” We read that book, Journey Into the Whirldwind, and watched a couple Eisenstein movies. Oh, and also Doctor Zhivago. It was a lot of fun- but kind of challenging as a sophomore who wasn’t sure what she was doing.
  2. One month?!!? I don’t know if I can agree to those terms!
  3. I also have a rant about grammar and power structures and capitalism, and that one really is probably very pretentious! Haha
  4. Oh man, I took a Russian history class my sophomore year (when I was still a history major), and we read Bulgakov’s Heart of a Dog. So freaking weird and horrifying to me at the time.... and still pretty much so now. I loved M&M, too, though. A little different here, but Leslie Marmon Silko’s Storyteller is the reason I even became an English major. I took a class on Native American lit & fell in love. I had to read Claudia Rankine’s Citizen last semester and would recommend it to anyone. I sat down and read it in an afternoon when it was supposed to be split up into like, 3 separate class periods.
  5. My boyfriend (a very non academic) will listen to me talk/rant about basically anything (bless him). He was talking to his friend the other day and said something along the lines of, “She’ll just say the weirdest words that have absolutely no meaning to me.” His friend asked for an example and the first word my BF thought of was “pedagogy” which was just REALLY funny to me and then they argued about how to say it, which was even funnier to me. Not really the same but whenever I tell someone I’m an English major (especially when I was still dating etc) I’d REALLY hate the whole “oh so you’re a grammar nazi,” because 1) no not at all, 2) comparing a grammarian to a nazi is absolutely uncalled for. I did teach a guy on tinder what “grammarian” was though, so not a total loss there.
  6. I also really wanted to apply to a program in CA, but nothing really fit.
  7. Hiya! If you have any questions about Clemson, feel free to PM me. I'm here now in the MA program and know quite a bit about the PhD program. You and @Wooshkuh having your apps done so early is certainly admirable! I only had the Clemson app done around then. The rest were turned in much closer to deadlines, lol.
  8. No worries! If you hadn't run out of money, I would suggest the MA at Clemson. Your interests would fit right in here.
  9. Yeah- I've always been in the southeast, so the cold isn't something I'm particularly fond of
  10. yeah- Purdue has one of those "invisible waitlists" where you can literally hear from them whenever.
  11. Yeah- I don't quite get it. I know some professors who did BA, MA, and PhD at the same school, others who were all different, and others who did MA + PhD at the same school.... That is to say, who freaking knows! I've applied to Clemson (where I am now), UT Austin, Texas Tech, Purdue, Washington State, Iowa State, and NC State. I've already got a rejection from MSU- which is fine, because I anticipated it & I'm not sure if I could survive in Michigan, but a rejection nonetheless.
  12. Purdue does this. They kind of have this "unofficial" waitlist type thing. I think it's been documented in other threads. Not sure about any other schools, though.
  13. Oh- awesome! I love Virginia Tech; my sister is there now, it's a lovely school.
  14. Welcome! That sounds interesting! I applied to Purdue and Iowa State, too (for PhD). Did you apply to Iowa States RPC program?
  15. Virginia Tech has an English/rhetoric MA? I know they have the PhD program (I almost applied, because I'm from the area), but didn't realize they had an MA. Cool! Yeah- it always feels like most people are literature. Everyone is lovely, of course, but I'm always curious about fellow R/C people! I'm applying to PhD programs (I'm finishing up my MA now), hoping to study digital rhetorics & literacy, games studies, and WPA as well. I feel you on "wanting to stay and wanting to leave," I'm torn between wanting to stay at or leave my MA school. I like it here, but I've been told by a couple people I should leave to increase career opportunities and such. Everything feels so abstract, though, because I know I'll probably be waiting another 2 weeks or so to hear from anywhere.
  16. So, following the trend of the comp lit & early modern threads, I figured I'd start a topic for the 2018 rhetoric & composition applicants. What are you interested in studying? Where did you apply? How are you handling waiting?
  17. I didn’t realize we were talking LOtR books! (And movies!) I love both; but they’re so different I just consider them completely different works of art/interpretations of a universe. +1 for they can drag on, but if you have time to kill, they’re definitely a good source of that.
  18. Congrats! Sending good OSU vibes to all the others waiting for news!
  19. I too am treating this as an acceptance @a_sort_of_fractious_angel! Congrats! You’re so deserving; you’ve been such a big help to so many this application cycle (like me).
  20. Also this- I’m planning a grad conference now, too. Definitely don’t take it personally. I’m curious to what others think, but I personally didn’t. I got accepted to a couple conferences and had a review published but I didn’t notify schools I had already applied to. I wasn’t sure if it was really appropriate to be like “hey, also this!” But maybe it is, I don’t know.
