Shellacked again...

I got rejected from a grad conference at a school nearby and then the same proposal was accepted at the CWPA (council of writing program administrators) conference the next week. So, chin up! -

After last nights game, I'm feeling much better. It was the best we've looked in a long time, and damn Foles just couldn't be stopped. I'm pretty excited; I had predicted the Vikings to win the Super Bowl, so I'm just jazzed about beating them. YUP! I was so pumped about football yesterday that I didn't think about admissions at all. I'll just focus on that for now.... Funnily enough, my roommate is a Patriots fan. She told me she wouldn't mind if they lost, though, because she's so used to winning -

I had a missed call from when I was teaching this morning. I thought hey maybe this might be a school! (With nothing to lead me to believe such) it was my dad who wanted to talk football (we’re Eagles fans). Sweet phone call, but I got my hopes up for the .5 seconds when I saw “missed call” and then my dad’s number. -

Cool idea! I originally intended to go to law school before switching to English. When I realized I wanted to go the grad school route, I originally intended to study Southern American literature with an emphasis on Faulkner. My junior year, though, I took a writing center theory course and decided whoa hey this is actually the route I want to go. So, my junior/senior year of undergrad were devoted to writing center stuff and I decided to pursue rhet/comp. My MA SOP was devoted to writing center theory, and the first semester was my MA was geared towards writing center work. My MA program deals a lot more in digital rhetorics, and I took on to it fast. My work now is in digital rhetorics & literacies, WAC/WID, video games (with lots of dabbling in pop culture). I still do a little work with writing centers and have some writing center presentations on my CV, but it's not my main motivating force anymore. -
Congrats to both of you!!!! YAY!!!

Yeah, thanks for posting that @punctilious. I too included something very personal (really personal, actually) in one of my SOPs about why I wanted to work with a certain prof, and I've been freaking out about it ever since. Who knows what'll happen there, but it's good to see something similar worked out for someone! -

(Took out the video for length). I guess I'm speaking more to the potential of the characters than how they're actually written/depicted in the movies (which is a stretch). I think Qui-Gonn is confusing almost to the point of being annoying, and maybe if his character had been thought out more it would've made more sense. They (and the movies in general I guess), could've just been so more..... but those trade routes. -

I have unpopular opinions on RotS. I had always been in the "Yeah, it's the best" camp, but after rewatching, I think the acting is just so not great it kind of ruins it. Like, even the awesome battle is just so.... lame. But I let it slide because I can look at Ewan McGregor. I always saw the good in TPM because it could be so much more. There are interesting characters & cool villains, but golly gee they're so confusing. Who's the main character? How do they relate? The pacing just tops it all off. Sorry to others this kind of turned into a Star Wars discussion. To take some of the edge off, have a TERRIFYING STORY: I see I have an email from a school and, you know, am very excited! I open the email and its apparently about how MY TRANSCRIPTS ARE MISSING OR UNREADABLE OR SOMETHING. At the time, I was on break from my class, so the rest of class I'm pretty much just zoned out, worrying about my transcripts. I /think/ the issue is some dual enrollment credit from my undergraduate transcripts, which were a pain to get because that was yearssssss ago, but I managed to get some screenshots of unofficial ones. I guess it was the Spreadsheets class I had to take my junior year that did me in. So, hopefully everything is okay. -

Only if he's black, red, has horns, and got written super poorly. But gosh, what a terrible character concept. -

Thank you! I'm a massive Star Wars fan (like, I have a Star Wars tattoo and am getting another, lol), so I'm always excited to see new fans!!! My boyfriend had not seen any of the movies when we started dating. I really think he only tolerates them for me. When anyone tries to defend Attack of the Clones to me, I only respond "I don't like sand." It is my very very very least favorite movie- gosh I hate it so much. TNT (or TBS, or one of the Ts) had a Star Wars weekend when The Last Jedi came out, so I pretty much watched every Star Wars movie twice that weekend. I had always been okay with The Phantom Menace (because Darth Maul is one of my favorite villains), but gosh, rewatching it was so rough. The prequels definitely are not good movies, but still mandatory watching IMO. -

Sometimes I think maybe they did. ? Coming into my MA I had the same idea. I’ll read over the summer! I got a reading list from old advisors and was going to try and read a book a week. Then summer started and I was like lol why am I trying to jumpstart work ? I say binge watch while you can! -

I’ll have to check it out!!! Congrats on getting the pages done!! Today was my “just write your thesis dammit” and turned into “open a new word doc and stare at it for hours.” Getting started really is the hardest part. -

I’m finishing up my MA now and have plenty to be doing (thesis, teaching, one last course), but that doesn’t stop me from obsessively opening portals and checking emails. I’m finishing up the second season of Stranger Things right now. It’s quiet good, but I like the first season better (I think). I also knit, so I’ve been trying to get better at that. Mostly I’ve been trying to cook new recipes and work out more. I definitely have a grad school body after the last year and need to spend more time on self care. I’ve recently been trying more veggie friendly/vegan recipes, so if anyone has any good ones send them my way!! I also have two black cats, Merlin and Edgar (who we believe is Edgar Allan Poe reincarnated). I rewatched Sex and the City last year @FreakyFoucault! I’ve always been a fan, but my god some of the jokes on that show did NOT age well. My favorite, though, is in the pilot when Samantha says “He’s the next Donald Trump!” -

So, I have two separate asides for this. When I was applying to MAs, it logged me as not saying that I waived my right to view the letter (when in fact I had), but my professor emailed me and was like “hey you need to do this, it’s okay, here’s all the nice things I wrote about you” and sent me a letter with lots of nice things but also got the programs name wrong LOL When applying to PhDs (now), one of my letter writers asked if they could send me the letter to make sure I approved of the way they were talking about me. I appreciated the notion, but in the end was very flattered by all they said. In both of these cases, I guess it really depended on the relationship I had with the person (which was pretty good in both instances). -

For my MA applications, one of my letter writers put the wrong name of the program I currently attend. So, it definitely happens, haha. -

In middle school, we had to write a how to essay. It was near Christmas, so I wrote a Grinch inspired essay called "How to Steal a Christmas Tree." My teacher gave me a zero on the essay for not following the prompt; I was kinda too young at the time to understand (or care), but my mom was all riled up about her stifling my creativity. Thinking back to it now I laugh (and agree with my mom! I'm so glad she could recognize my creativity), but I had fabulous English teachers in high school, so whatever. -

One of my cohort-mates brought her horse with her to grad school (from literally across the country), and we all thought it was super cool. So don't worry about it! -
I can share in on the pain of late letters. One of my letter writers has uploaded about half of my letters late. They've gotten in (I'm pretty sure- one school I can't check), just a couple days late. Hopefully that's okay, it's a bit stressful with these things we can't control, huh? I submitted my last app today, though, so the waiting truly is on now!

Old WS drafts also make for great litter box lining, you know, since they're basically shit anyway. -
How do you know they’ve already reviewed apps? EDIT: I’m referring to MSU, lol
