I guess I am thinking about reforms so as to not engender such power structures in the first place. If the charges are true, there's something that has been happening psychologically and socially within that work environment that is not healthy. The disparity of power probably plays into it.

Tenure doesn't protect from firing for cause. The kind of behaviour described in Ong's complaint would constitute grounds for dismissal.

Come on! Just send out the rejections already!!!! Put us out of our misery and let us decide where we will go, if anywhere!!

It should be against the law to charge that much for an MA. I'm not sure NYU's behavior in this case is substantively different from the recruiting behaviors of the "for-profit" schools. Does the program have any kind of placement history, just out of curiosity?

I feel it's my duty to share this article with anyone who has been admitted to UC-Berkeley (or might be admitted off the waitlist). Not gonna comment beyond that since this article is my only familiarity with the situation:

Philosophers are just awkward in general.  I'm obviously including myself in that generalisation, and realise that I too am quite awkward.  I've had some pretty awkward interactions, and frankly, I get tired of only talking about what kind of philosophy I'm interested in.  I won't think too far into it though, I know I take a while to warm up to people, and I'm inflicted with resting bitch face so people take a while to warm up to me.
I think we do have to disentangle uncomfortable from straight awkwardness, though.  If the department feels uncomfortable and it's not something you think time will solve, then trust your gut.
PS.  @Naruto, if it's any consolation, I thought you were better at casual conversation than I was when we met at Western

I'm now going to assume that all of my rejections were just because I was actually overqualified.  You hear that, mom, I'm overqualified for Stanford.

I just wanna give a shout out again to Schopenhauerboy. I think he was the first or one of the first to make a decision.

A sincere expression of gratitude followed by a brief explanation for why you're moving. Also probably the information that you're moving somewhere in there.

    Very excited!!!
Just had a Skype meeting with Oliver Sensen at Tulane. Will definitely be accepting my offer from them. We have exactly the same vision for my project, for me in the program, and ultimately career-wise afterwards.
Hope this helps people on the waitlists at Western Ontario, Tennessee, Boston U, Syracuse, Purdue, and Baylor, although I don't know about my exact position on those waitlists.
Very happy to have made a final decision and be done with the stress of this season!
Thank you to everyone for their solidarity and support this season!

Can a mod pin this post to the top of the sub?  This is obviously more relevant and stands the test of time, but the current year specific pinned post doesn't really help anymore.

Yes, I totally agree. I just figured that was the reason for every rejection I received. Also, that I must be too interesting, too good-looking, and that my penmanship is too good (as I suspect the writers of my recommendation letters emphasized).
