  1. thanks! I can see you are also accepted in three programs, so congratulations!. for me, it is 2/6 up to now...waiting for my dream program...fingers crossed
  2. thanks for the reply. actually the email was followed by my admission letter in a few days then. personally, I don't think every applicant necessarily receives such email. there have been schools I applied to last year from which I didn't receive the open house invitations and I was rejected finally.
  3. hey guys! I just received an email inviting me to an open house event. the question is "do all applicants typically receive such email?"

    CV

thanks for the reply but my question is not on "how" the CV should be arranged (the form). I'm actually looking for a website which makes a professional framework for the CV file (the CV is already written)

    CV

There are thousands of websites for making a CV. any recommended one?
  6. there is a war in the Middle east and one cannot just claim there is none on the basis that she/he hasn't heard about! you're absolutely right; no single university gets "rich" through such fundraising! yet potential POI s like you with such valuable standpoint can be mostly found among younger faculty members who are still passionate about out branching and enriching knowledge by discovering and investing in rare talents. but honestly, doesn't this "pool" of applicants provide the university with quite a "fortune" while only a few are chosen? the point is, some mentors already know that there is a pale opportunity for one to get in, but still insist on applying! neither for money for sure nor for more fame but out of being insensitive to the whole shining future one is dreaming about. your students are lucky by the way
  7. well, being rather conservative, I have chosen different topics for each program although one of the MA mentors I contacted thought I was referring to PhD supervision, as the MA subject is also having an eye on interdisciplinary nature! I've seen some applicants who applied for PhD but the committee suggested MA admission instead which might be also applicable to your case too. maybe it is not a bad idea to explain in your SOP for the very PhD that you are flexible enough to get admitted to MA as well and that's why you have applied into both to secure your room! let's wait for others to join us in this thread to see what pops up
  8. seems we're in the same boat. I already hold MA in English lit and I'm applying to phd in interdisciplinary humanities. yet to boost the chances, I'm thinking of applying to another MA, this time in comparative lit and art in the same university. my situation is that both of the programs are interconnected in sharing almost 80% of faculty members. I personally don't think such a situation would make the adcomm look down on your applications but quite the reverse can be also the case; it is more likely for them to end up thinking that you are so passionate and determined in pursuing your post-grad studies in that university. it depends, however, on how strong your proposed subject researches are and how you can manage convincing the committee that you got serious plans for both MA and phd and MA is not only regarded a rudimentary path for you to pave your way, which is not a bad strategy at all but might affect the adcomm in an undesired way. this is how I'm looking at it anyway. good Luck and one more thing, in my case, comparative lit has so much in common with interdisciplinary humanities, but how about religious studies and Communication & Media. I mean if you are admitted to the MA religious studies, choose the statement of intent or case studies which have something to do with your phd or at least bridging it; subjects like the role of commercials in religious propagation...something in such a nature...you would know better
  9. so one should be so! grateful when they bother replying! but sometimes it SEEMS to be part of their job description, sending a template email regarding the program description, facilities and their own websites (if there have any). don't wanna be a cynic, there is a saying, though, about such honey-coated (and also honey-quoted!!) emails...don't get over excited by such emails as they are aimed at gathering more and more money via application fee payments!
  10. well my MA is in English lit with a thesis on comparative subject (visual-cyber art and lit, literary adaptation theories). yet, given that I haven't done much philosophy before, my current statement engages visual adaptations/video games and philosophy. the interdisciplinary frame is not new to my background if philosophical approaches are! however, I'm thinking of applying to both MA and phd (for each of which I have separate SOPs)...let's keep the fingers crossed I donno anything about your background but maybe it's better that you write your statement and try to convince your POI to provide a feedback on it at this stage (not an easy favor to ask though!) or probably other students of philosophy attending the school to have a look and make comments. feed backs from various readers with different mindsets are helpful. MY problem is I'm applying to a program which is above all "interdisciplinary" with an emphasis on philosophy and cannot be written that "concise". I gotta elaborate the other disciplines engaged along with the supposed interconnections; a long statement which needs to be curtailed. this is the feedback I received from my POI " The key is to demonstrate that it is an interdisciplinary project, which you've done very well here but it can be a bit tighter". I suppose one has to rewrite and revise the statement of purpose as much as it is possible to make it more to the point, saying a lot in an academic gist while using a winning policy not to let the committee down with your lack of background!
  11. what do you mean by "doing some philosophy"? does it mean that if one's statement engages philosophy (interdisciplinary and comparative in my case), it should be elaborating the sophisticated concepts in detail? MY question is how the SOP should be addressing each book and philosopher consulted if it is a sort of eclectic survey?
  12. so don't bother your brain raising such philosophical questions if you have already the targets' replies. you're gonna need your brain for other stuff, trust me good luck!
  13. actually it was Canadian universities directing me to the heads and directors!! the professor would not let the heads down (hopefully), should you be successful at winning the heads' approval already
  14. sometimes it happens when they are inundated with such emails in this season. I think the best strategy is to give a very short summary of your potential project, which is supposedly in line with the POI's interests, (better to be with his current project), showing that you have already consulted their profiles or have read one of their books/articles carefully. being persuasive and determined is a key to attract and "hunt" them but be aware of being pushy! personally, I don't think one gotta wait like 3 weeks to hear from a professor as such a gap might imply his/her lack of interest in the proposed project beside being too busy. maybe another strategy is to contact the head of the program you are intending to apply to and ask him/her to introduce a professor given your proposal context. they are very helpful most of the time. but do not waste your time waiting...just continue sending emails and you will end up finding a "real" professor!
  15. so it was a misunderstanding for me! I thought you meant submission to the journals as for publications. in that case (essays for admission or writing samples), SLPgirl95 is absolutely right
  16. don't you think it just depends on the requirements specific to the very journal you are submitting your articles to?! just consult "instructions to authors" or "online submission instruction" tabs located (more likely and conventionally) as subcategories of "for authors". the instructions might vary from one journal to the other, depending on the required style. good luck!
  17. I personally believe that doing any kind of 'comparative' study requires a thorough knowledge of the cases involved. regarding 'religion', that would make it more cautious since covering such a vast field necessitates contextualization which means studying many disciplines (like sociology, culture, economic situations...) of the target society at once. so one shouldn't be fantasizing about taking more than 2 religions under study as it might take even a life time covering a single discipline, let alone accomplishing a well organized academic comparative survey. remember what your personal mission is!
  18. any such experience? no one? C'mon guys! somebody must clue me in
  19. has anyone ever happened to be admitted to a phD field different from (not totally though) his/her MA? is it common to expect the admission?
  20. well I only applied to one school Bcuz I got a job already but love the program very much at the same time! the school website has put a timetable for the admission process and the whole thing is due at the end of April!!! I wonder if it is only the case in Canadian Universities..."April is the cruelest month" then all I know is an acceptance, an official rejection and a notified waitlisted already...but nothing more. guess I'm at the bottom of the list, a safety candidate probably I don't think it might be that harming or impolite to reach out for the probable changed status unless you enjoy the hope by not being notified
  21. then no chance for me either and the crossed fingers are nothing but "labor lost" I guess well my MA is in English literature and I can't be expecting too much though my proposal subject is quite competitive
  22. thanks for the reply so silence could be inferred as being waitlisted sometimes. well I wondered the inquiry since some applicants have been informed about their status already. if you don't mind my asking, are you currently a UT phD student?
