Absolutely horrid. And now after the Nashville bombing downtown I will dis-recommend even going into the city in today's environment with the increasing number of alt-right folks and militia groups.

PhD Application for Counseling and Counselor Education
    1) School Applied - University of Florida (yep, only the one)
    2) Interviews/Acceptances - Invited to interview on 1/29 (wish me luck!)
    3)Rejections: N/A
    Some of my stats:
    Undergrad GPA 3.9
    Graduate GPA 4.0
    GRE 313 (162V, 151Q, 5.0W)
I've completed one mixed-methods independent research project. I have done a poster presentation and multiple oral presentations and workshops. I was advised not to publish yet, as I have a previous literature review that can be updated and prepared for publication if I get accepted. I have about 3 years of field experience and will have my professional license in a few months.

Pretty horrible, honestly. Most everyone commutes from outside the county into the city, so traffic is rough. The city has grown too quickly in the last 5-10 years for the infrastructure to keep up. There is a bus system (MTA), but it's rather spotty. Those are the only two real options, as it's generally not pedestrian or bicycle-friendly.

I was a former Chancellor's scholar at Vanderbilt University and Nashville was pretty interesting in the 1990's.
It is not an overtly racist place but if you part of a minority or LGBTQ group this is not a great place. People tend to be very conservative and elitist. Vanderbilt was alright but I made no friends during my 3 years there and I graduated early because the professors were super nice but I could not deal with the lack of social scene.
Food choices were all right but honestly the lack of cultural diversity is pretty glaring. I moved up to Indiana which was a tad better but Philadelphia and New Haven were my fondest memories.
Sadly enough... most students were very materialistic. Obsession with weekend parties, fast cars, and loud blaring dorm music were very distracting for studious folks. You probably would be better hiding in the awesome Vanderbilt library which was my best memory there.

Yes, I do. I was so upset after my Skype interview with one of the top programs in my field (my second choice/maybe a tie for first depending on the day you ask). I started crying uncontrollably right after it finished. Couldn't sleep, was going crazy, posted about it on social media just to get it out because I was so distraught. Tons of people were comforting me, etc. A week later I got an offer from them including a fully funded assistantship and a nomination from the department for an additional fellowship for top applicants. So, really, what do we know? BUT I am super duper extra preparing for my upcoming interview next week because my nerves cannot possibly handle a repeat of that experience! Anyhow, I really wish you the best.

Please remember that you are not your acceptances. You are not your writing sample nor are you your statement of purpose. You are not your grades. You are much more than that. Please don't let your acceptances define you.

Yup, it's such a bummer that there isn't even a slight catharsis to it. Submitted my apps relatively early, thought to myself beforehand 'hey I've got basically no chance of admission anyway so I'll feel much better and forget about it once they're in!'... oh the sweet summer child I once was.

So real talk, I was married for a while. Though not the only contributing factor, I knew the marriage was over the second I started talking about going to grad school and his response was that I wasn't allowed to unless it paid us. I'm so happy to be divorced because I'm no longer anchored by someone keeping me from living the life I want to live. AKA I have dreams and aspirations and I'm not willing to give up on those for a partner (and a partner shouldn't ask you to, though there may be some situations where you choose to value the partner over the dream). I'm not gonna lie and say it'll be easy to find the right partner, because it honestly won't, but you should not have to compromise your values in such an extreme way for the chance at romantic fulfillment. I hope you find a partner who will make you happy and who values your passions and goals as much as you do. <3

    Hi, this is Kim.
Isn't it frustrating to get into grad school and pursue something you love? Reading this thread, I can feel the struggle and all the effort you have been putting into your own career. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE UP! Two years ago I got rejected by all schools, I cried and started to think that I wasn't worth it. Last year I didn't make the cut and I was depressed. It got worse since everyone was telling me to quit and stick with my Bachelor degree. I don't have a very high GPA btw, my GRE was acceptable (I'm an international student). At the time I started to think negatively and was about to quit. Sometimes I felt like I was getting used to being rejected it doesn't really hurt that much.
Even when you failed or you feel like you want to quit, KEEP REMIND YOURSELF NOT TO AND STAY ON TRACK. Not everyone has the same advantage. I understand some have it easier than others. This is why we should prove that we are worth it. Life is a bitch. She tried to take you down and she may have won a few times. But in the end, bitches cannot win unless you let her! Yes you were rejected, cry your eyes out, then get back on track! Please!
This year I applied for one grad school only because I love that program and that I want to study there. I made it! Be like a pug dog who doesn't know how and when to quit! I am sure you will get what you want eventually! I'm sending all the best wishes to you who will apply next year and BEST OF LUCK!

Cognitive dissonance is more about rationalizing our behaviour when it misaligns with an attitude. e.g., Conservatives used to care about senate reform. Harper gets elected and does nothing about it, so people start to minimize the importance of senate reform (i.e., weaken their attitude in order to justify the lack of action).
You're asking a big question. At the most basic, Social Identity Theory talks about ingroup bias where we derive positive feelings from promoting our own social groups and derogating others. Broadly, you're also talking about "motivated social cognition" where we shape our thoughts in service of other goals (e.g., to be right, to feel good, to promote our group at the expense of others). So people see a meme disparaging Trudeau and conservatives are inclined to believe it (because it supports their prior beliefs) and liberals are inclined to be skeptical (because it contradicts their prior beliefs). The most specific term you're looking for is probably "biased assimilation" or "confirmation bias".

A lesson in pragmatics that I just taught in my freshman Intro to Linguistics class: questions like "do you know what time it is?", "can you open the window", "could you pass the salt?" are not (usually) information-seeking questions. If you answer "yes" and do nothing else, any reasonable person would consider you to be uncooperative. This is a request for you to take action! There are some background assumptions that all speakers in a conversation share -- for example, that the contributions we make to a conversation are relevant, and that they are truthful, and that they give just as much information as is needed, not more and not less. In most contexts, if someone asks if you can pass the salt, it's not just so they know whether or not you can do it. Unless the conversation is about your physical abilities (maybe you had a stroke and can't move your arm very well, for example, or maybe we're testing you ability to reach very far in the distance), in most contexts it's assumed that of course you are physically capable of passing the salt. We don't ask just to get a 'yes' answer. Instead: we ask an obvious question: of course you can reach the salt --> we are making the salt relevant to the conversation, and specifically making your ability to pass it relevant --> it's a request for actual action to be taken, of the kind that we just made salient --> so please pass the freaking salt! The exact same logic works here for your professor's request. He is not asking if you have a copy of your paper just to have that information and to do nothing with it. He is asking because he *wants you to send him a copy*! So a simple "yes" or "no" response isn't being cooperative in the conversation, it's exactly like answering "yes" when someone asks "could you pass me the salt?". And it'll be perceived in exactly that way by your professor, who I am sure is very confused about why you are being so difficult.

Ahhh I am just now seeing these posts! Lots of exciting news. I've been accepted to UNLV, Cal State Fullerton, Sonoma State, and Bradley University. I currently live in central Illinois, and I will be moving across country to the west coast probably! I'm stuck deciding between CSUF and UNLV...a good thing I guess!
