  1. agree to disagree. like i said, both quality elite schools...but i'd still give a slight edge to columbia in terms of stronger faculty and program reputation.
  2. it's true, even someone in pediatrics or psychiatry or some of the other less competitive residencies makes enough bank to pay back their loans. their debt/income ratio is probably a lot better than a lot of the IR/policy grads on gradcafe
  3. I wouldn't lump poli sci in with the humanities guys. Poli sci PhDs get to go on TV and advise politicians and write in newspapers and conduct the type of research that a layman can appreciate in many cases. Therefore, the perceived utility and practicality of the degree is higher than for humanities degrees. I mean, when is the last time a CNN or msnbc producer said, "quick, we need an ancient greek literature expert for the program." I think all of this in combination leads to greater overall respect to poli sci PhDs in general, relative to their humanities counter-parts. Now, I'm not saying the humanities are bad or that media ubiquity is the best measure of utility; I'm just saying the perception is that poli sci is probably held in a little higher regard both among the public and even among some academics
  4. In the political science world, Columbia has the stronger reputation. NYC also makes for a better location than North Carolina. If you feel you can afford the New York cost of living, I would strongly recommend Columbia (though both are still quality schools). Good luck.
  5. You don't necessarily have to work in an NGO in order to have relevant work experience for an MPP/MA-IR. You actually have some distinct advantages that you might not even realize! 1. You worked abroad, and that to in a developing country. Big plus! 2. Your work involved engaging in a poor, rural area. People sign-up for the Peace Corps and other volunteering orgs to attain this type of experience. 3. Your work experience was in the public sector. Nothing is for certain, but you should be a strong applicant for most if not all of the programs you have listed. Best of luck!
