Hey Everyone -- I thought it might be nice to start a thread about campus visits for a few reasons. See if other folks are attending the same visit weekend as you. If you've already toured a campus give some insight and impressions. If it's an interview weekend, what types of questions did you/should you ask, what did they ask you etc. It would also let us connect on the same schools. That being said -- is anyone planning on going to UT- Austin's communications studies weekend in February? It's one of my top choices so I'm definitely going to try to go.

Still pending. I'm going to assume rejection at this point, but still have like 5% faith in the MA vs BA theory. -

Texas sent decisions around the same time they normally do. And it seems like a lot of English programs are as well. I think it just depends on the process, how many applications they get, and who's running the committees. It's still early in the process! Hopefully we'll all start hearing more news soon- 733 replies

Fall 2017 Applicants
kirbs005 replied to Dr. Old Bill's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
The feeling when the graduate coordinator at one of your schools tells you a month after the deadline that they didn't get your GRE scores. But also secretly hoping they're telling you (instead of just ignoring the application) because they want to admit you... -
How many programs are you applying to?
kirbs005 replied to JessicaLange's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
A word of caution with the Big10 alliance: I used it this year and all of the schools have a VERY wide range of criteria to give out waivers to students. I did not recieve a waiver to most despite meeting the initial Big10 criteria. Most of the schools told me I needed to have participated in some type of program like summer research program, or have recieved a Pell grant. Don't let this deter you, because I did get one free app! But be prepared for them to tell you no (unless you did participate in one of those/get a grant/etc). -

It was a Dec 1st deadline, I think they just were trying to get it done before the Holidays. I know 2 rhetoric programs have notifified already but I think most will be coming in January. We'll see how it goes. And again, wasn't expecting to get into the program, but was just surprised to hear back so soon.- 733 replies

2017 Applications Thread

Good Luck! I feel the same. I ended up applying to 12 schools, 3 PhD, 9 MAs (more than I initially thought I would, but kept finding good fits) so I'm hoping I hear at least a little good news. But waiting is the worst. I got my first rejection on Friday, wasn't expecting to hear back so soon so I was caught off guard. Wasn't expecting to get into the program but still not a good start for my psyche. I'm a rhetoric person so I split time on this and the Literature, Rhet/Comp boards. You?- 733 replies

2017 Applications Thread
kirbs005 replied to kirbs005's topic in Communication and Public Relation Forum
Yes, mostly just because my professors encouraged me to look elsewhere (at least for an MA). Also- since it's such a top program it's been a long time since they've accepted someone within the department on the rhetoric side. Perhaps I'll look into going back once I'm done with an MA, because I do really like a lot of the professors, the school and the town. That being said I've been in Madison for 6 years and my partner and I are looking for a change of pace as well.- 733 replies

It's right downtown! The campus is about a 15 minute walk east of the capital. Personally I thought the bus system for being a midwest town was great. I had no issues walking/biking/taking the bus when I was a student. And the University provides bus passes. I didn't start driving in town until I graduated and started working full time.- 733 replies

Fall 2017 Applicants
kirbs005 replied to Dr. Old Bill's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I originally felt great once I finished submitting, but now realizing that starting yesterday people are actually going to start review my applications is making me nervous. I'm also hoping you're right, that it's only a couple weeks. Not excited about the next few months of anxious waiting. -

Fall 2017 Applicants
kirbs005 replied to Dr. Old Bill's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I used a mix. For programs with longer requirements I submitted a shortened version of my thesis, but some of my programs actually asked for seminar papers/something shorter than 15 pages so I submitted a seminar paper. I also tailored it a little depending on the professors I was looking to work with at the school. -
The Final Coundown
kirbs005 replied to Dr. Old Bill's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Surprisingly, submitting my applications is way more relieving than I thought it would be (only got 4 left!), but that also may be because I started working on everything in June. I'm sure the anxiety will set in around early January, post holidays waiting to hear back from programs. Hopefully everyone isn't stressing too much! You can do it! I asked one of my Professors who's writing a letter of rec about this and she was saying she doesn't really care, as long as it is well written and she can read it. Now that may be different for programs in the top 5, but I went to undergrad at a top 20 program and she regularly sits on the advisory board for grad admissions. I also may or may not have shamelessly made my font smaller (12 point to 11 point) to reduce my WS down to 8 pages for Oregon State *side note- WHY is your ENGLISH application asking for "your best academic writing" at an 8 page max, when basically everyone else wants 10+ pages?!?*- 34 replies

I'm applying this Fall for Rhet/Comp as well. I've got a mix of English department and Comm departments because I'm more focused on the rhetoric piece and less the composition piece, but obviously it depends on your focus as well. Unfortunately I've just been working off a large mix of lists either from Googling "rhet/comp programs" and also just looking at strong English/Comm programs and digging through the university websites to find where their program lives/if they have a program. In addition to the website you linked, I've liked this one as well: http://associationdatabase.com/aws/RSA/pt/sp/resources_gradprograms And this map of doctorate programs: http://batchgeo.com/map/1a491427ce89c24f0206905a57091e6e I know this isn't crazy helpful, but that's what I've found. Let me know if you want to talk more.

Anyone starting applications/starting to look at applications for the season? I figured I would start a thread here. I'm planning on applying to Rhetoric programs (some in English departments and some in Comm departments). Tentative list: Comm Departments: UNC, Northwestern, Michigan State (WRAC), Georgia, Texas (Austin), South Carolina and Wake Forest. English Dept: Michigan, Ohio State, Miami of OH, UCDavis.

Fall 2017 Applicants
kirbs005 replied to Dr. Old Bill's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Rhetoric specifically, more focused on the comm side than the composition side, however I still find that interesting. I've spoken many times with my thesis professor about different programs and what she recommended as good fits. I guess I'm also just used to referring to it as comm since many folks look at me funny when I say rhetoric or immediately ask me what that is. As to MSU I'm looking more at WRAC because their comm arts department is more social science/psych based, or health based. I have a friend there who advised WRAC or their English department for Rhetoric. -

Doing an odd combination of applications to English depts. and Comm depts. this season. Looking at MA, MA/Phd, Phd programs, only have a BA (well technically 2). Background in Rhetoric and Literature. Been out of school for a year (2 total when starting programs) working as a corporate trainer. Excited to see how the process goes and have some folks to talk about it with. English Depts: UCDavis, Ohio State, Michigan, Miami (OH), U of South Carolina Comm Depts: Georgia, U of Texas, Northwestern, Michigan State (WRAC), U of North Carolina, Wake Forest
