  1. Update: Had my phone interview (Friday--I'm late updating). Went super well! No official offer of admission yet, but the professor with whom I spoke was very optimistic and excited. Some of the questions she asked me include what I liked about the program/what attracted me to the program, why I thought I'd be a good fit for the program, and why I am choosing this path at this point in my life. After that she asked some kind of informal ones, like what I want to do after getting a PhD (I say "informal" because she said I wouldn't be held to it and that she was just curious) and if I've ever visited the campus. I feel really good about it! Some of my anxiety about having imposter syndrome myself/getting accepted has subsided. But only some. Lol. @nikkimx good luck in your interview! Just be yourself! The more genuine, the better. ? Good luck everyone! Decisions will start rolling in soon!
  2. A little for sure, but I thought it did a good job of making light of a lot of the struggles. I'm pretty excited though, so no anxiety about it has really sunk in just yet!
  3. I haven't had the interview yet, but it was an extremely positive email from one of the professors I mentioned in my statement and whose interests match really closely with mine. She mentioned that I seemed like a strong fit on paper and she just wanted to make sure with a phone call. I feel really good about it!
  4. Actually just got an email for a phone interview with the faculty member with the most closely associated research interests to mine at UNC Chapel Hill! Super excited--first I've heard anything!
  5. I'm re-reading the Harry Potter series (my school where I teach has a Harry Potter student/staff book club), reading Kindred by Octavia Butler, and will be reading Closing the Opportunity Gap: What America Must Do to Give Every Child an Even Chance edited by Prudence Carter and Kevin Welner once I finish the previous two. I also just read Survivig Your Stupid, Atupid Decision to Go to Grad School by Adam Ruben (funny Christmas gift from a friend who knows I'm going through the application process!).
  6. None of my application statuses have changed. ? I know they may not change them or just haven't yet, but it's officially January and I'm anxious.
  7. I have heard basically the same things as @nashville0808--highly rigorous quantitative training, highly published and motivated faculty, interdisciplinary opportunities (which is cool to me at least in part because I also looked into the CRA program and may be interested in some collab there), extremely competitive stipends and funding opportunities, and then of course the opportunities in Nashville are just endless. My friend in the program loves it and has had tons of internship and research opportunities available to her.
  8. Not sure how many apply, but I have a friend who goes there, and her year, I believe they invited 10 or 11 for interview weekend and gave offers to 8 or 9 (the others were waitlisted). That's just for LPO though.
  9. I applied to the same program! This one seems to be one of the earlier programs to notify if you get an interview, so I'm hoping we hear something in the next 2-3 weeks!
  10. For anyone who might be interested, I found a really informative post from someone who was on an admissions committee. It was for Sociology, but tons of the information still applies. (Link: http://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/40476-iama-grad-student-rep-on-a-adcomm/). Only a few more weeks before decisions start rolling in! Happy holidays as we wait, folks!
  11. @Vulpix and @graciasadios -- how did you guys end up choosing HGSE? What are your favorite parts about being on campus? What challenges have you faced since arriving? I would love to hear more about your experiences! Also, if anyone is interested, I found an incredibly informative thread pinned in Sociology (link: http://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/40476-iama-grad-student-rep-on-a-adcomm/) from someone who was on an admissions committee a few years ago. I definitely recommend checking that out for those who are looking for ways to pass the time!
  12. Oh no, sorry! Recent as in the last couple of years. Interview notifications should go out in late January.
  13. Some places don't interview at all (Stanford, for instance). HGSE's recent PhD interviews appear to have been conducted via Skype, and Vanderbilt invites students to campus. For HGSE, I think I read on another thread somewhere that they interview 50 and take 25. (I do know that the entering cohort they go for is 25, and I would think those not given offers would go on the waitlist). I don't think HGSE interviews for Masters programs, only PhD programs. But this is just based on what I have learned by stalking threads/probing the website.
  14. I put mine in my breakdown/stats, so I don't mind sharing! I struggled to choose between CIS and EPPE, but I looked into both and chose EPPE based on the professors' research interests. What about you guys?
  15. After you posted, @hopefulPhD2017, I went back and looked, and I did the EXACT same thing. I reordered my scores for GSAS today and emailed the admissions office. Fingers crossed we'll be okay! You're definitely not alone!
  16. I don't think any of those are big red flags, so you definitely have a shot! According to The "Who Studies Here" page on the HGSE website, their quant average for PhD applicants is the 58th percentile, which corresponds to a 154/155 average. As far as your experience goes, I'm sure a lot of applicants have teaching experience, but from what I understand, HGSE wants diversity in the experiences of its cohorts, so I wouldn't worry about that too much, either. The holistic review process should work that out. Just based on the info you provided, it seems that you're qualified, and your admission will just be a question of fit (Are you what they're looking for? And are you the most qualified applicant within that niche/"fit"? Which is largely out of your hands). Of course, this is all just coming from a fellow applicant, so keep that in mind! I wouldn't worry though. You will end up exactly where you are supposed to be. Good luck to you!
  17. Since your word processor makes that mistake a lot, maybe other people's do, too. If it's a mistake they see a lot, they may not disqualify your app, especially since they know you CAN spell it right and it is probably an autocorrect/spellcheck thing. However, I don't know. I have heard that they look for any reason to weed out applications and that may be one of the criteria they use. I wouldn't worry any more about it. It's in the committee's hands at this point, and you don't want to stress any more than you have to!
  18. It does seem like we have a lot in common! I haven't been able to make it to campus, but I went to a local info session held by HGSE admissions. It was really interesting and helpful. I was able to talk with a current PhD student, which was informative, and I asked the admissions rep if it was necessary/helpful to contact professors but she said they don't take that into account when admitting students. That said, I had already contacted one professor who emailed me back and was very nice, so I think responses just depend on the professor and their willingness to respond/time constraints/etc.
  19. Gotcha! I am not a TFA alum, but I am teaching in a high-need high school. I was certified through an alternative prep program. I'm looking at ed policy, program evaluation, and inequality. I'm excited to start going the research route! How about you? What types of programs are you applying to?
  20. Out of curiosity, did you get something like that from Vanderbilt? I've only gotten something like that from one school (UGA), but the only school I've applied to that you also applied to (besides Harvard) is Vanderbilt, so maybe the schools I applied to don't really do that as much. Now I feel like I haven't been getting something I'm supposed to. Lol.
  21. I got a confirmation email for both my application and my supplemental section for my HGAS/HGSE application on the day I sent it and an email confirmation for each of my recommenders. :/ When I log in to view the application, it says in green font "Application Status: Submitted." Maybe it it went into spam?
  22. So how is everyone planning to pass the time until admissions decisions come out? I know we all have a while, but I'm excited!
  23. Last year I think PhD interviews were sent around January 23. Acceptance notifications were made around February 8. This is based on the gradcafe survey results.
  24. Not sure about how competitive this program is, but I don't think the one year of experience will hurt you--from what I understand HGSE is interested in diverse cohorts, so it's all about what you spent the year doing as well as how you present yourself in your SOP, what your recommenders say, GRE scores and GPA, etc.
  25. First post! Excited to join the conversation as we wait out the next few weeks/months. Program: PhD-EPPEGRE Score: 170V, 165Q, 5.5AWAGPA: 3.88; major gpa 4.0Work Experience: Two years teaching English and being content lead for my subject area at an underserved public high school; I worked in various capacities for the college I attended while I was a student there. Undergrad Institution (Public, Private, Ivy, etc..): Top 20; private What Other Schools Are You Applying To: Vanderbilt, Stanford, Berkeley, Princeton (Sociology), Columbia, a few local universities I have pretty good GRE scores, but since fit is such a big factor in PhD programs and so much emphasis is on the SOP, I'm very anxious for January/February. Best of luck to everyone!
