Portal looks the same. No email. ACK. I don't know how to concentrate like this. I really am okay with not getting it, I just need to know either way so that I can move on with my life (and start drafting another application).

lovepsych reacted to TakeruK in On funding and taxes
For a good start, I would read this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Income_tax_in_the_United_States. The short answer is that you should expect to pay about 10% to 12% of your stipend on federal taxes. It could be less though if your stipend is low.
Note that for the 2018 tax year and onwards, there will be different tax brackets. So make sure you are reading the tables for the correct year!
Here is more detailed info. I'm making lots of assumptions for a "typical" F-1 or J-1 student here. Your country may have tax treaties with the USA that allows for more deductions. In addition, this is just based on my own experience, please consult a tax expert for official advice
As an international student, you will likely be a non-resident alien for tax purposes (if this is not the case, then the text below will be different, but since you say you know nothing about the tax situation so I am assuming this will be your first time in the USA).
Therefore, we don't qualify for very many deductions at all. Actually thanks to Trump's "Tax Cut and Jobs Act", the personal allowance (called the personal deduction) that used to be about $4000 is eliminated. Trump instead doubled the standard deduction, which non-resident aliens do not qualify for. So, with the exception of books and necessary supplies**, most non-resident alien students will not qualify for any deductions at all.
(**Note: Books and necessary supplies refer only to materials you are required to purchase in order to complete your educational program. So, required textbooks, with receipts qualify. And if your program requires you to, e.g. buy a lab coat in order to attend the lab classes, you can deduct that too. But you can't deduct "optional" expenses not explicitly required by the course, even if you need them. That is, things like binders, papers, pencils are not deductible, unless your course requires you to buy a very specific type of that item.)
So, the 2018 tax brackets are...
    10% from 0 - 9,525
    12% from 9,526 - 38,700, and
    22 % from 38,701 - 82,500.
There are higher brackets but not typical for grad students! Also, I include the 3rd one there just in case but most people will be in the first two. So, if your funding package is $30,000 plus tuition waiver, your tax owing will be something like:
10% on the first 9,525, so you owe $952.50 (9,525 * 10%) for that first bracket. Then 12% on the remainder (30,000-9,525 = 20,475), which is 2,457 (20,475 * 12%), for a total tax owing of $3409.50. This is an effective tax rate of 11.3%. But this is just federal taxes. Depending on where you live, you may pay state or city taxes as well. So it might be a few more percentage points.
Another thing to note is that your stipends may have a large fraction withheld for taxes because you are a non-resident alien. When I was in the USA, about 15% of my stipend was withheld even though my tax owing is always less. So you will have to wait until you file your yearly tax return to get that money back.

It resembled a worksheet of GRE-esque quantitative problems. Fairly simple stuff that any psychology major should know. I only got 2 wrong and ended up receiving an admissions offer!! It definitely all worked out

I'd say just go in with what you know. As others have said - it sounds like more of an assessment to gauge if they'll need to form a course on either intro or moderate stats. I think a good chunk of first year graduate students in psych - if they've had a mehods and intro stats class - have a basic understanding of descriptive stats (GRE stuff) and perhaps t-tests and pearson's correlations, but nothing beyond basic ANOVAs or linear regressions. But especially if the program is accepting non-psych undergrads, I really don't think it's an assessment of ability. If you really want to study for it, I'd just review mean, median, mode, standard deviation, t-test, and person's correlation. They might ask about z-scores or histograms or confidence intervals or other stuff, but you really shouldn't be expected to know that off the top of your head (or very likely anything else). Hell, I need to review those terms and I've been working with hairy within-subjects doubly multivariate analyses for the past couple years. Good luck!

lovepsych reacted to dormcat in Conflicting interview - one school won't budge & already RSVPed to another
Hi, this is a tough situation, but let me say congratulations on the interviews even if it's a complicated situation! This is a really frustrating situation for school B to have put you in, not that they have a responsibility to avoid conflicting with other schools when there are so few weekends. I don't have experience here, but I will say that a colleague of mine got accepted to schools despite turning down interviews (she had already accepted an offer).
FOR SCHOOL B: Is it possible for you to reach out to the PI (if it's not who you're communicating with already about the interview), explain, and ask them if they would be willing to do a skype or phone interview, or if you can come visit them personally at a time that works with their schedule?
FOR SCHOOL A: Or, you can talk with the person coordinating the interview (grad secretary, maybe?) and ask about alternative days. That way, you don't have to communicate further with the PI until you know if there's alternate days. If there are other days and you reschedule and can attend interviews at A and B, just send the PI at school A an email explaining that you had to change your interview date due to a conflicting interview (or, if you don't want to seem like you're choosing B over A, you can just say a conflicting event) but that you are looking forward to interviewing with them on Alternate Day.
If school A doesn't have an alternate day either, in my opinion you should just go to school A's interview day and put school B out of your mind after sending the aforementioned explanation and offer alternatives to the PI at B. The reality is that you *might* still get an offer from school B despite them not meeting you in person, but if you cancel at A to go to B for whatever reason, the PI will know and that will hurt your chances more than a "sorry I have already an interview I've committed to, can we work something else out?" will. Good luck!

    Things I asked included:
    1) Are you able to live comfortably on the stipend that is provided or are you forced to seek out other sources of income or make sacrifices you would prefer not to make in order to have the basics (food, shelter, clothing, medical care, transportation)?
    2) What is the POIs communication style?  Hands on or hands off?  Constructive criticism?  Only points out mistakes, never successes?
    3) What is a typical week like for you in terms of how much time is in class, in lab, doing clinical hours, doing homework, etc?
    4) Are students supported if they wish to collaborate with other labs or different departments?
    5) If students are interested in gaining clinical experience with a population that is not included in the current practicum choices, is the department open to creating an opportunity?
    6) What are you expected to do during summers and are you provided a stipend and medical care for that time?

    1) I don't know about everyone else, but my current PI asked me when I was interviewing–"What would you want to work on for your first year project?". I was not really expecting this and so it caught me off guard. I would recommend thinking about specific real-world projects/interests that you would want to work on with your POI; when they ask WHY you want to work on this project, don't just say "to help people". Give them a real reason for the importance of your topic of interest.
    2) If they are having you interview with multiple faculty members, make sure to get some understanding of what they work on. This can help a lot when interviewing. Also, other faculty members are oftentimes interested in hearing you defend why your research interests are important, so be prepared (like in #1 above) to talk about this.

Regardless of what the interview sites tell you about having meals/snacks always ALWAYS have your own snacks and water with you!  This is especially important if you're on a special diet, have allergies, or are just plain picky.  Some programs are not very organized and you may have so many things scheduled for your day that you get 5 minutes to scarf something down.  Or you may find that their understanding of your dietary needs is horribly inaccurate or the special meal requested for you is forgotten or still not something you can eat.  Some places also just have terrible food regardless of what is served.  I just carried my purse with whatever I needed in it, but other applicants carried messenger bags or briefcases.  Most programs also load you down with swag.....pamphlets, brochures, random office supplies, water bottles, etc so having a bag is helpful anyway.  Oh and have kleenex, cough drops, and hand sanitizer.

Yay! I applied to Nebraska-Lincoln too but clinical. I believe my friend from undergrad is in the school program there and I know she LOVES it! She told me nothing but great things about the school when we chatted about it. Good luck!

Thank you! I am pretty excited but still in shock, being my first time applying I honestly had low expectations on getting invitations. Who have you heard from so far?? And congrats on THREE interviews, that is amazing!

Congrats on getting an interview offer! I think this is a great thread because it's more general than some of the others I've seen. I understand hearing back from programs way earlier than expected (I've heard from three!). Hopefully, you've responded to their interview invitation by now (you won't seem desperate). Good luck

I'm trying to convince myself that checking every day for updates when the deadline for submission of documentation hasn't yet passed is completely pointless.

Congratulations! You can look at school psych posts in previous years. Some students shared the questions you may encounter at interviews. They are pretty comprehensive, covering different areas.
The interviews may include a combination of an informal social event the night before the interview, introduction to the program, individual/group interviews with multiple professors, interviews with current grad students and/or a school tour. It should give you not only what your POI is like but also a sense of the whole community.
