  1. @heyDW what's Halo Top? Just wanna report that I ate a cookie, a piece of chocolate cake and a huge ice cream today AND bought a pair of shoes. If anyone asks - I'm going through a lot of stress
  2. Sounds like a great night to me I envy you, all of my friends are in Europe. Since moving to US last year, I've made only three friends here and they're all Serbian like me, so I'm looking forward to meeting people from different countries during my PhD.
  3. @av2010 Yaaay Congrats! Now you can relax and wait for two more answers.
  4. Mourning requires ice cream for lunch, dessert and dinner in mine Off topic, yesterday I started yoga again and I feel so great and stress-free! I was doing yoga in Serbia for 1.5 years but I couldn't continue here in US because my work schedule kept changing. Now I work until 5pm every day so I had my first class yesterday evening. I would recommend yoga for staying sane during this stressful time. You applied to 5 schools and haven't heard from them yet, so I would say you still have 5 good chances to get accepted I know you must be feeling worse and worse as days go by but hang in there, it will soon be over.
  5. @heyDW I checked the results page before opening this page, saw your message about rejection and I was like "nooo please let it be someone else" I'm so sorry!
  6. That's what I'm hoping for - that someone will explain in detail how they want the research done (and everything else ). Any news on your husband's application status? Wasn't it supposed to change in 24 hours?
  7. Ok... I just read this and have two things to say: 1) Why didn't I look outside of our main thread earlier? I was unaware you guys are having interesting discussions elsewhere 2) I am completely freaked out because I come from Serbia where there is zero research at BA and MA level (sigh), so I have never done anything like this. The point of education in our country is memorizing definitions that someone else wrote 50 years ago and then repeating them on the exam. Critical thinking hardly exists. I am worried that I won't be able to keep up with other PhD students because of this. Of course, I will do my best to work as hard as I can during PhD, but I feel that I will never be able to compensate. I actually have no idea how to do a research and my biggest concern is will I be able to understand how things function I was so excited while reading about the things you're doing. Everything sounds so interesting! I can't wait to start. In my SOP I listed that I would like to research LGBT representation in the media of East and West. I have two very close gay friends who inspired me to start thinking about this and also while working as a journalist in Serbia I noticed that media in Eastern Europe treat LGBT horribly, compared to US.
  8. Yay Congrats! So you will have to choose after all.
  9. @heyDW I have a feeling your next post is going to be about your husbands acceptance letter good luck! @DBear now that you put it that way I'm sorry I haven't contacted any professors before applying.
  10. Welcome Weekend at Purdue begins at 4:30 on Friday so I will actually have to lie to my employer since I started working just a month ago and still don't have any days off.
  11. Thank you! When is the open house exactly?
  12. @SKB did you get any answer from UCSB? I am still waiting. I just got a long email from UW Seattle saying I wasn't selected. They got 186 applications and had to choose only 10. I wasn't sad at all, since I already got accepted at Purdue. Thank God the first answer was a yes, otherwise this would hurt so bad.
  13. According to this, they made a huge increase in funding this year, so I guess I was lucky. Compared to other universities, Purdue does seem really generous, especially considering low cost of living index in Lafayette. I met a girl who applied only to one Hawaiian University. She was so confident and in the end she made it. I only contacted one professor from UCSB but that was almost two years ago and I just asked her if they offer funding.
  14. @heyDW omg!!! Please let us know what happened as soon as you find out. I was trying to imagine what it would feel like to be in the same situation with my husband and it must be sooo nerve wracking. @phdthoughts I think you're still in the game. I didn't hear anyone being rejected or waitlisted for Purdue. Their welcome weekend is on February 24 so I guess they have to notify all candidates at least a week before. Where else did you apply to and what do you know about Purdue Comm program? @DBear thanks for the link
  15. @hnm1231 congrats! More and more great news are being posted here every day @DBear can you please copy the link to the thread about school visits? February is our month guys
  16. Random information - Purdue still didn't update the status of my application ("submitted") and they sent me an acceptance letter 11 days ago. I wonder if other schools already rejected me without changing my status
  17. Oh, right, I completely agree. If something seems too good to be true, in most cases it's not true at all. Cynicism and sarcasm have led me through life so far I don't know how to interact with people that are constantly in Ned Flanders mood (from the Simpsons) and that for me would be a signal that something is wrong.
  18. @heyDW what do you mean by "oversell"? Sorry, not a native speaker
  19. @DBear that's a great advice. I will wait to find out all the decisions and then I will contact some current PhD students and ask them some questions.
  20. @phdthoughts can you tell us more about "unsupportive and cold" please? I am really worried about this. I mean, I can't imagine a situation where I ask someone about a class or something, and they just don't want to answer.
  21. LOL ? Speaking of other candidates, I wonder how other grad students will behave once I start my studies. Will I find some close friends or they will consider me as competition... I guess this has a lot to do with luck (and of course my attitude towards them). I know a lady who made some great friends during Phd. Then again, I know a guy who told me that people from his cohort were terrible and didn't want to help him at all, not even share some information. I wish we could all go to the same school guys
  22. Well if that doesn't work out, parachute is always an option (with a risk of ending up in the ocean). We gotta give our best, right?
  23. @heyDW that's so funny about cryogenic freezing I really hope you two will end up in Minnesota together! I'm not sure what my problem is but I tend to go through life pretty much not getting upset about anything (I think I will end up having a stroke in 10 years from now LOL). Like when we found out my husband has won the Green Card Lottery and that we will move to another continent and our lives will change completely, my reaction was "yay, great!" and of course I was worried about everything but I never had trouble sleeping or eating. Now I just accepted that I will go to Purdue and my attitude is - if something else comes up, great, if not, that's ok too. Again, probably I will end up having a major meltdown in the future @DBear I hope it won't be in the middle of the night again.
  24. Good luck! I imagine how you felt while reading the email. I was just telling my friend today how lucky I was that Purdue told me straight away that I will be fully funded. It must be hard to go through all that stress, receive an offer and then wait again for funding information ugh...
  25. I agree. I keep checking the application pages several times every day. It would be much easier to just know I was rejected.
